I think as a rule, the show needs to have started and ended this year. Not sure if we should include sequels however.

It's a hard call to make, since some "second seasons" are happening long after their first season (like Mushishi). Maybe have a "best new anime of the year" and "best returning anime of the year" ?

Could go that route, or just whether the new season is sufficiently distinct from the previous season - e.g. Psycho-Pass 2 is functionally a new story, as is SAOII, whereas something like a new "season" of One Piece is just a continuation. Can get pretty hard to determine, tho' so I prefer the best new/returning dichotomy too.

I also think there needs to be an allowance for things that don't actually technically finish "this year" - anime doesn't quite run on a perfect yearly schedule, so I see no reason why having a few episodes run into January should disqualify a show from being counted - as they almost certainly would not be counted as a 2015 show. The only exception being true two-cour, single-arc stories. For example, UBW? It's going to finish halfway through, have a break, and then continue next year. That can't really be evaluated as a show for this year as it's not actually finished yet. Of course, if it was still running for another 13 episodes or so with no break, I also think that would disqualify it from being "this year".

Incidentally, I hadn't actually seen the last couple Space Dandy episodes yet and finished them today. The last episode was absolutely awesome - brings together all the important side characters, explains a bunch of lose threads that tie things together, and gives a really fitting send-off to the minor and major plotlines, all in proper Dandy style. Really good ending overall, especially for such an extremely random and episodic show. Now I'm debating whether I should have put it above Bahamut or not...

Is there some sort of Christmas-Valentine's Day association in Japan? Both Log Horizon and Fate/UBW did a Valentine's episode this week!

Anyways, first cour of those two shows is now done. Looks like Fate/UBW will take a short break and continue the season in the second cour of next year (April-June) while Log Horizon will presumably keep going from Jan-Mar.

Not very impressed with Log Horizon at the moment - Shiro's "explanation" to the Kunnies two episodes ago didn't, IMO, make a whole lot of sense or explain anything beyond alleviating some financial woes, but they never explained what the actual financial woes were in the first place so it is meaningless.

So Fate/UBW... I know this is based on a visual novel... was it just a visual novel, or was it a dating game visual novel? This romance between Shiro and Rin is all kinds of awkward (and in some ways seem kind of unfounded, no?), but they are spending a lot of time on it. Carryover from the VN and/or going to be actually important?

In any case, good to see Kirei in action again while confirming some more of my guesses and proving some wrong
Spoiler

and very nice to see some more major plot development in the second half. Still, looking back on the 13 episodes so far as a whole, I think it really shows how spread thin the events have been and how little has actually happened. Lancer, Berserker, Rider and Assassin all basically showed up for just one inconclusive fight in one episode each and then disappeared. Then there's been like 4 separate battles with Caster that all end with just one party or the other running away, back to status quo. And as Silencer noted, the most character progression we've had after 13 episodes is the tired old believe-in-yourself-and-you-can-win-Shirou!

So, my excitement for the second half is only tepid, even after seeing the post-credits preview.

And since it is end-of-season time there's new shows that will be starting up in a couple weeks! Any that anyone are looking forward to?

I'm planning to watch and expecting to like:

Durarara!! season 2

Ansatsu Kyoushitsu {Assassin Classroom?} - it's about an alien octopus monster who becomes a high school teacher and also threatens to blow up the Earth. The students try to come up with a plot to destroy him, but on the other hand he is a much better teacher than they've ever had before.

Rolling☆Girls - Slice of Life, by the same studio as Attack on Titan

and I'm going to check out but not sure if I will actually like them:

Death Parade (supposed to be a psychological thriller, but it's a brave series to try and go into that genre with a "Death ____" name!)
Sengoku Musou (literally an anime of the samurai warriors games)
Yoru no Yatterman

There's also new seasons of Aldnoah Zero, Tokyo Ghoul and Monogatari, for those who have been watching those.

Triple post!

Shingeki no Bahamut / Rage of Bahamut finale!!! So great!!! Amazing!!! :p

Seriously, that was a fantastic ending - no pulling rainbow and sunshine out of their asses, no navel-gazing, just awesome swashbuckling and goose-riding adventures (well, there might have been a few emotional beats in there, too)! Favaro gets to do what he's been doing best since the start, and Kaisar does the best job of lending him a hand you could ever ask for!

You thought your big fancy sequels and adaptations of best-selling manga would win the season/year? Pfft. Studio MAPPA is just going to go ahead and make an anime from a crappy pay-to-win cell phone card game that has better story, imagination, pacing, fight choreography and emotion than 99% of what else came out this year. :)

I have a question. Where do you guys watch all the anime? I used to get a channel called Animax on tv until a few years back when it got cancelled due to a dispute with our DTH operator. Since then its been an anime drought for me.

Also is the good anime available in english in dvd collections?

There's a lot of websites that you can stream it from.

Crunchyroll is probably the site that gets shows up the earliest (if you have a paid membership), and the quality is very reliable (if you have a paid membership) - QT can tell you more about it as I think he uses it pretty regularly. If you don't have a paid membership, there are lots of ads, shows take at least a few extra days before they become viewable, and you won't get anything better than 480p.

I use anilinkz, which doesn't upload its own videos at all, but rather just combines a whole bunch of other sources into one video box - so, ie, there is just one video box on the Duararara!! episode 12 Dubbed page, and if the selected source isn't loading very fast, the quality is bad or you just don't like the font they use you can choose to try a different source underneath. Most mainstream shows have a couple HD sources, so the quality is usually good, but some older shows (especially the dubbed ones) don't always have good quality options. You won't get any blazingly-fast 1080p+ streams though.

For the most part, anything that is produced by Funimation you can watch on the Funimation Youtube channel (though it can be hard to find anything old on there, their videos are not exactly well sorted) or on the Funimation website itself (you need to create a free account on the website, I think, but the videos there tend to be good quality).

Hulu apparently has *some* amount of anime available, but I have no idea how much.

There's also GoGoAnime, Animefreak, AnimeSeason and a TON more that I know next to nothing about!

A lot of it is. Though sometimes the DVD boxsets are astronomically priced on sites like Amazon. Doesn't help that some DVD sets put like 2 episodes on each disc, making the whole set 12 discs when it could easily have been on only 3 or 4 for a lot cheaper! (Some do this, but a lot of good shows do not, too... it varies)

rightstuf, com, you can find series for as little as 5$ on sale. Their Christmas sale ended on the 28th but they are having a clearance sale with a promo code so go check it out.

Also don't forget netflix has a decent selection shows.

Its January first, I got home from my new years party but have not been sleeping lately so I decided to try a new anime I somehow caught wind of. Its now 8 am and I have finished Highschool of the dead. I would be watching season 2 right now but it does not exist, may never exist and thats a crime.

It's a show about how a few children from a school survive a zombie apocalypse. Its nothing new but its done very well. It had too much fan service! A ridiculous amount that made me cringe for the first 4 episodes but by episode 5 I was taking it all in with good fun and by the end of the show I was captivated by the ridiculous love triangle/square/octahedron/tesseract thing that was going on. I hope the main character gets to bang everything, the zombies with his rifle the women with his gun, one is for fighting one is for fun!

I need more Anime

Hey thanx guys I am not sure I can get Hulu or netflix here, but one of those streaming sites ought to work. I really want to say Fate Stay Night as I had only seen a few of the episodes when my anime channel went of the air . I love Rurouni Kenshin and the Getbackers, but apart from that I have mainly seen really old anime like Mobile Suit Gundam, Ninja Robots, and Cowboy Bebop
