Yeah...don't expect much "deeper motivation" from Shirou. >.>

As for Sasaki, in-universe he never actually existed, while the others all did.

Yup, it's pretty much a law of the Grail War. (And there are nineteen possible Servants - they're just all people who operated under the same name and therefore contributed to the legend.)

(It appears to be subverted quite often though, even in the two most canonical Wars, one of them doesn't conform)

This Nasuverse is weird. People who didn't exist IRL are established real people and people who did exist IRL are established myth-only people in the Nasuverse! It's not like there was a shortage of heroes to choose from, I guess the author just really liked certain mythological characters!

Already talked about SAO and F/SN above. Rest of this week's weekly blurb:

Log Horizon (9) - Ooooh, now that's a more interesting boss fight. Shiro's "I was all secretive and vague in setting up these disparate plots and only now I realize I should have been more open" sounds like a really thin fabricated explanation for the studio wanting to have things be all mysterious in the first few episodes but backtrack and explain it all later.

Shingeki no Bahamut (8) - Lots of things revealed and confusions lifted! Beelzebub, Nicole, Lavalley! And no one at all is surprised that the king is paranoid about the popular Jeanne usurping him!

Inou Battle (9) - I was surprised to see the tiny scene with the other team characters in this episode - I thought we wouldn't see them again at all. But I kinda guess the "here's a convenient plot thread, nah we're lazy let's delete it" is a final dig at how this show is not going to go back there, and that is good. Meanwhile things have kersploded into full-on harem anime parody. It's a little bit *eugh* just seeing it get setup, even though I know they are going to spin it around and meta-make-fun of it all throughout. Trust in Trigger, trust in Trigger... And this episode was also hilarious, as ever. It also kind of makes me want to read the light novels to see if there are any differences (especially with Sagami saying specifically he is a 'reader'... as if perhaps he is not just breaking the 4th wall but having read the LNs he is trying to change the anime to be different?)

Query:

There is a whole pissload of anime on Netflix, and I'm interested what's best to get into.

They've got SWORD ART ONLINE, PSYCHO PASS, KILL LA KILL, and a few others that I can't think of. Recco's?

I'm leaning towards KILL LA KILL because I've seen bits of it and it seems MENTAL...in a good way. I only ever watched like 2 eps of PSYCHO PASS, but I enjoyed it...and Silencer was pretty grim about SoA (at least the first season)

I have been watching Eureka 7 via Netflix.

I really really enjoy it, about the only thing I could state is their should be more heavier plot centric episodes in it far more often. The plot is sooooo cool, but its all in the background and kind of ignored. It's one of those show it should be explaining important stuff..every now and then..but fails to get to it.

This show would be amazing if only they spliced a few memory episodes/ explaining why certain characters are important <this Lt.col guy, random other characters..are important and I care why!!!??> into the actual show. Fustrating.

Cool, I saw that on there and I recall wanting to see it back when it came out and just never getting round to it.

For you, SAO will probably be fine, even S1, as you have no point of reference to compare it to itself with. :The Force:

It's still got issues with the way the story is laid out, but most people who hhadn't read the novels liked it way more than I did...and season 2 is to die for. XD

I've only seen a couple of episodes of Kill la Kill, as I was planning to wait and watch the whole season but haven't got around to it yet, but it also gets quite a lot of praise.

You must watch Psycho-Pass. Must. Enough said. XD

Journey>destination man. It's the story of renton's develop from a nobody to a somebody. That is the plot. The whole stuff with the scub coral is the fulcrum for renton's dvp.

Also the wonky structure from episodes 3 to 7ish is not as bad when you can blaze through it on Netflix than it was when they were coming out 1 week at a time, I'll bet.

I haven't seen any Kill la Kill yet, but it is by Hiroyuki Imaishi and he is basically at the point now where I assume anything he made is great unless proven otherwise... and so far, I have not once been proven otherwise.

Sadly I confuzedly mentally combined Psycho Pass and Shin Sekai Yori in my head when they were airing, and when I didn't like SSY I didn't realize Psycho Pass was a different thing and didn't watch it either. Now season 2 is airing, and I've heard so much good things about it that I am waiting for season 2 before diving in to spare myself the grief of watching 1.5 seasons in a weekend and then having to wait for new episodes each week :D

Cool! Thanks all. I'll start watching one of them tonight, probably SAO or PP. Getting to blitz through seasons on netflix is pretty much the best ever.

Started SAO last night, and blitzed through 8 episodes. Drek is right, there is a really wonky structure as they make Kirito meet the various chaarcters at different points in his time...but getting to watch them back to back means it ewasn't too disorienting.

But yeah, I love this show. It's a blast to watch. I love the characters (even tho Kirito can be a total assclown sometimes). I especially liked the episode with the murder in the safe zone plot. Really clever. And I like Lisbeth. I mean Asuna is cool and all...but Lisbeth was more eanest? I dunno.

Much enjoying.

Yeah, those episodes are actually adaptations of the side stories, and don't feature in the main plot of the novel. It was a really, really dumb way to do it. I could take random insertion between plot episodes, but all of them back-to-back in no particular order? Wtf?

As for the rest of the story, it's good enough. But compared to the source materials it is just...ugh. XD
the second season was adapted so much better. Considering how hyped I was for the first season when the trailer dropped...yeah, big disappointment.

Glad you're enjoying it!

Yeah! It sounds like I've got something even better to look fwd to in S2, so that's cool...and if I can get through S1 on Netflix over the next few days, it looks like I can jump on CrunchyRoll to plow through S2 as well.

EDIT: It should be noted I can't get the theme song for the opening (Crossing Field) out of my head. Luckily it was avail for purchase on iTunes.

This week, onnnnnnn:

SAO II (22?) - I had totally forgotten Asuna's family name is Yuuki. I practically had a heart attack when she told the receptionist her full name!
Spoiler

UFOT/F/SN/UBW - So Rin thinks as long as she says "speaking hypothetically" before revealing giant personal secrets no one will realize? Sadly, with Shirou it appears she's right :crybaby:

Log Horizon (10) - It's the meandering speech that never ends. Yes it goes on and on all episode. Some guy named William started saying just whatever came to mind. And he'll just keep on muttering random pseudo-enthusiastic slang until he realizes how much he has the hots for Shiro like everyone else just because!

Shingeki no Bahamut (9) - Continues to deliver.

Inou-Battles (10) - Sagami is so creepy! Ahhhhh! Yes! You go Sayumi! Punch that asshole's face out! That was satisfying, even if it is basically meta-smacking down the audience ourselves :D

Also, holy crap this guy:

His abs have abs!!! :crybaby:

I haven't mentioned it before, but there's lots of fun little background references in this show, mostly to other Trigger/Hiroyuki_Imaishi works. ie in this episode the family from Evangelion was in the quiz show and Andou's phone picture is the Gurren Lagann emblem. People in the comment sections are really good at pointing them out!

LiSA? Nuh uh, she's a good singer!

(Which is why, for example she also sung the OP in Fate/Zero and a bunch of other animes)
