Saw it at the Film Fest in Sept. To be honest, part of the appeal of his films has always been their whimsy, and this one is a straight up historical drama about the guy who eventually was the engineer behind the Japanese Zero. It's a good film, but it's REALLY dry. So much so that it was the first Miyazaki film I have ever walked out of. I got to about the 1hour mark before walking.

That said, I WANT to give it another go because I've had friends give me royal shit for walking out, and said it was awesome.\

So, grain of salt? It's never going to be his best, but hopefully you don't think it's his worst.

From what I have seen not likely. It was a pretty complete story arc. As far as a Space anime should go felt like it had everything. (Though my knowledge is pretty limited on the subject so I stand to be corrected.)

The ending does leave potential for a new generation but seriously, Gurren Lagaan ended on the highest note possible, would be a big ask to follow up on that.

Only the fact that it was a mech anime leaves options open. "There's always a chance someone will find your throw away head shaped mech" has to be some sort of trope.

I saw the recent anime version - my comments are upthread somewhere.

The aliens look/talk like humans (some language differences) because there's some sort of "galaxy seeding" going on in which the humans and aliens all came from the same stock, but grew apart over the many thousands/millions of years. It's not ever directly referred to, but it underpins one of the important alien character's stated desires and actions.

This diaspora/reunification also makes some sense when you look at it from a Japanese nationalistic viewpoint - which the show intentionally refers to often and not in an ironic manner.

The best drinking game to play is whenever they mention "port" or "Kodai", you drink. The ship always gets dinged on the port side first and Kodai is the Chris Pine Captain Kirk to the Captain/Admiral Pike of the actual captain.

The aliens being pseudo-human is kinda weird, big-pictureish. Especially since the humans don't seem to realize it. Why not send a couple Gamilans to Earth as infiltrators or something?

Oh well, whatever, as you say/said it's not really a series that is interested in super-realism or high ideas. And yeah, Kodai seems to be able to do anything he wants without getting in trouble (steal a plane and crash it? No problem!).

It's fairly fun/interesting though, so I'm enjoying it enough to keep watching probably through to the end.

Yes, by all means, please finish SBY 2199. It's worth watching and has a few good story twists to it.

I still love the "port/Kodai" drinking game. Makes for a bit more viewer interaction and incorporates beer/whatever you're having as you watch TV.

Gun X Sword is like Big O but set in a sparsely populated world. Not as good as Big O IMHO but still good. Instead of millionaire with giant mech, you get grifter with giant mech. Good stuff. Tenjou Tenge was just big boobs if I remember correctly. Shingeki no Kyojin (or Attack on Titan) is badass; definitely check it out. I didn't care for Witchblade and haven't checked out the rest.

of those i've only watched .hack sign, gun sword and shingeki no kyojin.

Im pretty sure every1 here will reccomend shingeki no kyojin as it was the anime of 2013.
.hacksign i got bored around the halfway point. The story tends to drag a lot. If you're REALLLY into mmos you might enjoy it but there's better out there. If you want a good mmo anime try Log Horizon it's almost done so you should be able to catch up in time for the finale.
Gunsword is ok. If you want a mecha show then you'll enjoy. THe characters in this show are really well written and developed, and on top of that it's op is rather unique in that all you see are the character shapes, until they make an appearance in the show. THat way when a character shows up, you don't instantly recognise them from the op. Plus you can watch all/some of it on funimation's youtube channel.

I watched the first two episodes and it looked ok, but idk if ill continue. I did however really enjoy the reboot, the reboot has more female characters in it and it had this epic naval battle (liekly inspired from midway) around 2/3 in.

I really enjoyed it tbh. I was overly ecstatic when leaving the theatre which may have coloured my facebook posts about the movie. Porco Rosso is still my favourite miyazaki movie, but this one is a close second (better than monnoke or nausicaa). It was definetly worth the trip downtown to go see it.

The show-runners sacrificed quite a bit of naval tactics to make "good tv" - which is akin to having TV police people ignore actual law enforcement rules and procedures, TV doctors do all kinds of crazy stuff and so on.

That's what I'm talking about - not the physics of a vessel that can hyperjump itself thousands of light years and do all manner of atmospheric and space maneuvers.

Alright, here comes the spoilers for Episode 20 (Under the Rainbow Sun, which truly is a fun space naval battle to watch):

There's a bit of silliness inherent here in that all these ships can travel huge distances through space and should be able to detect each other long, long before they actually do. We'll chalk that up to "Can't have them playing dodgeball with artillery/missiles over distances better measured in light-hours because it'd make for boring TV".

The fighter planes in the beginning are far, far too close together. They should be much father apart to scout and to make harder for a missile or cannon attack to take them all out. Furthermore, longstanding fighter pilot doctrine has them split into elements of two (think Top Gun, with a wingman following a leader to safeguard them).

The sneak jump attack is nicely done. However, it's slightly weakened in impact by the port side being attacked first - as per longstanding SBY 2199 tradition. The snatch plan is brilliant in strategy. The reversing and kablooie-ing of the drill is okay, but the capital ships are far, far too close together for any sane maneuvers or survivability.

The carrier that gets destroyed with 10+ planes still on its deck is silly. It's many minutes into the battle and it still has them on the deck? It's not a late arrival and the Empire has no manpower problems. The final charge of Domel's actual ship is also silly. There's zero reason for it to go in, when SBY is the one limping into the ion storm alone and the ships destroyed by the drill explosion secondaries should have been alive to support the command ship. The detachment of the "command module" and subsequent limpeting of SBY is underpants on head level stupid.

It'd have been more suspenseful if they'd adapted the sinking of the Bismarck a bit more and drawn out the cat and mouse game near the ion storm. This could be done within one episode by skipping most of the fighter pilot stuff, having it be more of a Hunt for Red October type game and make the threat of the storm bigger, which makes the ending make more sense.

I think as the first Miyazaki film I ever saw, and one that I saw in a packed TIFF screening back in 1997, at which Myazaki himself attended and prefaced to the crowd as his "massive, long, environmental epic"....PRINCESS MONONOKE will always be my favourite, with TOTORO and KIKI'S DELIVERY SERVICE as close seconds.

Yeah, I defo want to see TWR again and watch it all the way through.

I am pleased at his son Goro's contributions to Studio Ghibli (ARIETTY was great), and it seems like the studio is in good hands after he retires.

Recall the previous episode where they only sent in aging vets and inexperienced pilots as the bulk of their forces were in a another gaslaxy and couldn't make it in time. It's not inconceivable that they had a surplus of planes, besides if one of your pilots has to bailout but can be recovered you can send him back in if he's unhurt.

Because the title made me giggle, and in the interest of finding new ways of playing with my new Kindle, I got Space Dandy ep 1 on Amazon Instant Video. Haven't watched it yet, as I'm finding the streaming to be inadequate...

In better news, I was able to watch Kill la Kill ep 1 on the Crunchyroll app with no problems whatsoever. It was not too shabby, and I'll probably watch further at some point.

Has anyone used the Funimation Android app? I can't find any videos that are actually available. It just keeps looping back to the homepage.

Fighter planes don't need to bunch up together. They have sensor packages - even today in the real world - that can let them see for quite a distance. They do the formation stuff for entertainment purposes only (Blue Angels, showing planes on TV etc.). In this imaginary world, the fighter plane sensor packages can see stuff on planetary distances and the capital ship packages can see things on interstellar distances. It makes zero sense for any fleet elements to be truly close together. They should be thousands of miles and even light seconds apart. Tossing a nuke, even a big one as we currently understand them, should take out one ship and leave it an irradiated mess. It shouldn't take out half a battle group of the Empire's most tactically competent admiral. It's plot contrivance to make for tense TV.

The Old Man and the Sea has nothing to do with Domel's final charge whatsoever. TOM&tS was about a fisherman who got his dream fish, strapped it to the side of his boat and couldn't prevent the scavengers from swiping all the meat before he hit port. The fisherman got to port safely and any metaphorical connections possible (pursuit of power, realizing one's dream etc.) have little to nothing to do with Domel's final charge. What Domel's charge played on was basically the self-sacrifice Kodai's older brother did and it was kind of silly too. Domel still had a submarine out there that the SBY2199 couldn't stop. Victory wasn't out of his reach. He goofed up tactically and the episode then ended.

Start with Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann to get the fullest sense of him. He was pretty influential in FLCL, but didn't have series control like he did with TTGL and the later Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt (which you should get to only after trying TTGL and FLCL).
