Start with Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann to get the fullest sense of him. He was pretty influential in FLCL, but didn't have series control like he did with TTGL and the later Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt (which you should get to only after trying TTGL and FLCL).

oh that's what he did? i've watched and enjoyed all 3

Anyways im just going to concede on the rest. I really don't feel like getting into a explanation of machismo/chivalry w/e you call it is. If you read hemingway and you didn't get what dommel is driving at, then you clearly missed out in your reading and you have my sympathies. It's not something that can be easily expressed in words. Maybe when i'm not so tired i'll give it another go.

Sure, I look forwards to you connecting a story about a successful fisherman landing his dream fish and then losing it to scavengers to the silly kamikaze charge of an anime character who is a blend of Yamamoto and MacArthur.

I just finished Gurren Lagann last night. What a fun ride! Everything about it was so over the top, but in such a sincere way that I couldn't help but love it. I'm just curious though — is it considered a satire of the mecha genre or more of a love letter to the genre?

I think love letter and exploration of tragedy driving creativity/exploration, but purposely injecting more sheer joy and "this isn't anywhere close to making sense" into it in order to maintain palatability to the audience.

love letter. If it was a satire it would take itself a lot more seriously.

Amph: I never did get your Eva 3.33 opinion. What did you think/where is it going?

Brilliant and unexpected to say the least. The writers seem to have gotten a way to keep the weirdness alive, keep Shinji off balance without completely depriving him of agency (which ticked me off about the TV series) and make room for fleshing out what the Impacts actually do to the planet as a whole as well as what's going on with NERV/the pilots.

As to where the series is going, I think Anno is exploring the nature of partnership/friendship a bit more. There were strong pairings going on in 3.33 that seem to continue in the preview for 4.44. That's interesting and diverges from the TV series considerably.

But I have to admit, some elements of this movie were really hard to accept until I just mentally went "Okay. It's Anno, take it as it is and we'll see what happens."

...

Not to drag Fate back up or anything, but seriously... Do the dubbing studios even make a tiny bit of effort in matching voices to characters?
Kirei is the only one with a passable VA. Everyone else is generic and lack that delightful level of voice-to-character the JP cast has.

I know it's partly because I'm used to the original voices, the VAs would probably be OK if you were just listening to the dub. But it still leaves the series weaker, IMO, than it could be.

Especially Gilgamesh. Where is the arrogance, the disdain?! His words are right, but his voice is just... Whiny? Less like a mighty King of Heroes and more like an average ass. :)

Anyone ever watched "The Big O" ? I randomly came upon the first episode and watched it yesterday. It looks like it's about 10 years old, but I'm not sure. Plot follows a film noire-ish PI guy (who has a mansion, butler and supercar like batman) as he sort of solves things and gets mixed up in criminal shenanigans, but also he has a giant robot that he fights other giant robots with. It's weird, but not necessarily in a good way - I didn't find it all that engaging and the giant robot thing just came out of nowhere for the last 8 minutes of episode 1. But this is anime, it can be really hard to judge things based on the first episode. Anyone seen it and is it worth watching more?

Yes, Big O is worth watching more. It was somewhat contemporaneous with Cowboy Bebop and shares the exploration of the noir/detective genre with it.

There's an overarching story that's explored sporadically in the first season and then becomes the point of the second season. However, the ending is a bit infuriating for some. So be prepared for some loopiness and for everything all of a sudden becoming a giant robot battle in each episode.

Those were indeed my thoughts as well. After my initial twenty minutes of..."what the fuck am I watching? Where is the next bit of the story that I KNOW...?" I settled in and accepted. I especially liked the extra scenes with Shinji and Kaworu simply because they never had THAT much screen time together in the show and theirs is a really interesting friendship. I also like what seems to be a direction that really DOES attempt to come at the next Impact and Instrumentality from a different tact, as if those involved know/ remember EoE on some level and know it didn't work to everyone's satisfaction and merely solved Shinji's issues and no one else's (mainly Mistao's)...so they need to try again. I am really excited to see where it goes in the finale!

I was a bit weirded out by the disappearance of one of the characters from the climax of Evangelion 2.0 and the non-aging of the other pilots. But the rest of the world and cast has changed considerably during that time.

The Kaworu/Shinji thing was a little strange, but you're right about it being a great usage of screen time. Inside one movie, they made Kaworu a vivid and memorable character, which is somewhat unusual for Anno.

So im tempted to give up on phi brain, just too repetitive and predictable.

Indeed. I think my opinion of Kaworu in the original was "Meh, he's this nutter guy who is kind of like a male Rei...and I'm sure he's there for philosophical/Shinji's brainhole reasons"....but here he actually gets to BE something. And that's what I dug.

Yeah, the first 20 minutes of the movie are a mindfuck for the missing character, non aging...ect.

Also, the giant transforming spaceship.

I DO like that NERV split into factions...and we get WILLE now too. It never made the most sense that Misato just went along with Gendo and Fujutsuki's plans so easily...I understood Ritsuko's position...but Misato spends all her time EXCEPT when it comes to Gendo...being strong and telling people what's what....so seeing her in charge of the splinter group is not only pleasing to see, it makes perfect sense to me.

Magi continues to be my favourite current anime, and possibly my favourite ever. This show easily has me anticipating the next episode each week far more than I ever did for Attack on Titan! I will be sad in two weeks when the second season finishes and they probably won't be doing a third season for a long time, if ever :p

In particular, I loved the latest episode, which somehow had lots of great humour mixed right into what was otherwise a huge and awesome 20-minute battle. Though moreso than the jokes, I kept laughing at everyone's clothes. For those who haven't seen the show, some characters in Magi can channel Djinn through themselves for a limited time to "go super saiyan" and they all magically change (read: lose) clothes when they do. So in this latest episode there was a whole bunch of these people all assembled together, all wearing big robes and armour. Then they all went super saiyan and all turned half-naked together before they got their battle on, and I just about fell off the couch laughing seeing them all together :p

I heard that apprently SAO is going to be doing a new season this year. A quick google search shows a few similar announcements, but not a lot of details.

Makes sense. They can at least get a one-cour out of the Gun Gale Online arc. Don't know about Fairy Dance or Mother Rosario though.

I'm not exactly upset to hear about another season, but I'd really rather there was a better adaptation than what we have now. At least, they might do GGO more in-depth and without the pacing problems of the SAO/ALF arcs... Maybe. XD
