Bought Hyper Light Drifter earlier during the sale as well. That's a special kind of game. Frustratingly hard at time but also fascinatingly mysterious. I think I am going to hate the upgrade system in that game. The resources are too scarce for my liking, especially when some of the upgrades seem so crucial.

It seems like the sort of game that I'll find really frustrating, but I just love what I've seen of it so I have to give it a go.

^^ I'm torn between that, Hollow Knight, and Ori and the Blind Forest. I've watched reviews and gameplay vids for all three and have them sitting in my Steam cart but can't make up my mind Posted Image

Last night I played a bit more Transistor, and also a bit of Halcyon 6: Starbase Commander, which is great fun.

S+S is very enjoyable so far. Simple I guess but I was looking for an old school 2d game with some depth and some nice visuals and so far it's delivered.

I've got an upgraded spear now which is good at taking bosses down but not so good at close range. I like the way the levels are designed like the original DS, with gates or ladders that lead back to earlier areas. I got a brand last night that lets me reach areas that were out of reach before so I've been retracing my steps to find obelisks that I can now use.

Plenty to explore anyway, and since I've only used a rogue build so far with no magic or holy stuff, or heavy weapons for that matter, there's a lot more to do.
So that's the story. And what was the real lesson? Don't leave things in the fridge.

Spent some time over the weekend trying out the games I bought in the Steam sale. Hollow Knight is the one that's really grabbed me so far - I love it (the same as I love the Metroid games). I think Hyper Light Drifter is brilliant and atmospheric and challenging, and I really need to invest in that cos I think I've missed a lot of secret stashes already. Stardew Valley - hmm, I can't see myself spending the time it probably needs, but it'll probably get a look in occasionally. I haven't downloaded Ori and the Blind Forest yet.

I had to refund Firewatch cos it was giving me awful motion sickness. I liked what I played, though. I'm thinking I'll put the refund towards Salt & Sanctuary and Dex.

Salt and Sanctuary just got better.

I found a dragon that I was barely scratching, so I farmed a little, got some upgrades through the Alchemist (who transmutes weapons) and went back for round two.

The game for me has improved as I now have weapons I want find and upgrade, the brand I just got lets me do a cool wall jump so I've got hidden areas to find, and the dungeon I'm in just keeps getting deeper with no sanctuary in sight. Just lost about two levels worth of salt through a dumb move on a lift, after defeating 5 hangmen who snare you with a noose and pull you up to the ceiling.

Also I just saw a map for the game and it looks like there's loads left to do.

Well, crap. I just found the games equivalent to Bed of Chaos.

After numerous attempts I've got his pattern, but the added collapsible floors, and the random jets of fire along the stable platforms (sometimes all at once) mean I've managed to get within a few hits of victory only to get my remaining health drained by fire.

And I ran out of time... it was getting late and I had to quit. What makes it worse is having to pay gold every time I get revived - watching my hoard deplete after every loss is kind of soul destroying. You died, now Pay!
So that's the story. And what was the real lesson? Don't leave things in the fridge.

^^ Hmm, starting to wish I hadn't bought it last night now :)

Dealt with the False Knight in Hollow Knight last Knight - er, night - then got my first spell and bought all the mapping doodads that were in the cartographer's shop. I'm quickly realising that my platforming skills aren't what they used to be, though #gettingold :(

I was pretty annoyed at having to quit before I beat the boss. The more I played the more I learned of the attack pattern, but I was getting tired nd making stupid mistakes. I think I need to buff the weapon with something in the final stage so I can get it before it beats me!

I've noticed I'm getting a sore thumb joint and a few aches after something like this now.

If you haven't got it yet I can recommend Salt and Sanctuary, it really is a 2d Souls experience.

I'm down somewhere in the fungus area. I believe I am meant to find some kind of mantis people right now. Last thing I did was activate a tram station. I believe it will act as a fast travel system maybe. I hope it does, since the game is in desperate need of giving the player a faster way of getting to the surface.

Is salt and sanctuary like the other Souls games, in that there are miles between bonfires and it doesn't save before boss fights?

Yeah, it is a fast travel thing - there's one in the first area, the Forgotten Crossroads.

It's pretty kind in that regard, there is usually a small sanctuary (without npcs) that you can save at right before the boss. Well, near enough anyway. The bigger sanctuaries are far enough apart to have you searching, low on health, for a new one.. sometimes they're quite easy to miss. If you install a Guide in there you get to fast travel between them; also you have a return bell to get you back if you need to.

It's on a continuous save as well so when you die and lose stuff you've lost it, you can't reload and do it again, you just keep trying.

Edit..went back in and beat Tree of Men on second attempt. Must have been tired I guess!

Gah why do these games all have a poison swamp level?

I just finally made it through rage inducing platform challenge to find a big ugly boss I killed first go using fire.

Now on a boat to the other side of the island with an upgraded Tachi sword. My new straw fisherman's hat looks cool too.

Played a bit more Hollow Knight and I'm still enjoying it, but I got drawn back to Darkest Dungeon over the weekend. Out of all the games I got in the Steam/GOG sales it's my favourite.

Not sure which plant thing you're referring to?

Killed a few more bosses, mostly just a bit of dodge block hit with some fire to speed things up. Tachi sword is super fast.

Certainly not as difficult as souls games but very entertaining and great value for the price. I'll be tempted by ng+ or a different class when I'm done.

Wooo, YES, The Witcher 3 platinum trophy you are mine! Took me long enough, reckon the combined total of both NG and NG+ is easily 200+ hours, but it is finally mine! Still have a couple of trophies for the Hearts of Stone dlc that I missed first time around before it'll say 100% but the thing is I just got my copy of the FFXII remaster today, The Zodiac Age, so I think HoS will have to wait awhile, a long while, a erm very long while.

Seriously so freakin' hyped to play FFXII again, still have my PS2 copy but the HD remaster will be good, plus it's actually a different version of the game based on a Japanese rerelease of the original game, so the differences are more than cosmetic. So happy :apt2:

Your shadow at morning striding behind you
Or your shadow at evening rising to meet you;
I will show you fear in a handful of dust." T.S Eliot - The Wasteland

Well done! It took me 200 hours just for my first play through :apt2:

Played a bit more Darkest Dungeon last night, experimenting with a different party composition based on debuffs. Seemed to work pretty well.

What is the party you're using? Right now I've been having a lot of fun with a bleed based team with Hellion, Flagelant, Occultist and Houndmaster. Hardly useable for all situations, but really fun when facing enemies that do bleed.

I haven't really found a good place for the Antiquarian, I'm not sure I understand her yet. My favourite heroes though, I think, are the occultist and grave robber.

Last night I had a leper, occultist, jester and arbalest. I ran two veteran level dungeons, and both were in the Weald. The debuffing was working well so the enemies were missing a lot and doing less damage, and all but the jester had healing skills if there was any trouble. Plus the occultist was pulling the back row enemies forward to make them easier to kill. It's the first time I've gone without a vestal in ages. I'm thinking of swapping out the jester for a houndmaster for stress management but not quite sure yet. Might try it in a short dungeon and see how it goes.

I haven't really got to grips with the antiquarian yet, either, or the abomination. Up until now I'd kind of been boring and relying on a vestal and jester for health/stress management, and throwing in a combination of two melee characters in the front lines (usually a hellion and one other), but that means battles are probably taking me longer than they ideally should cos I have less damage output.

What do you think of the flagellant? I haven't bought Crimson Court yet.
