Uggggghhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. Minecraft. Been watching it for 2 days now. So boring. Fucking kids of mine I swear.

Ed oh yeah and it's the start of summer break so it's just beginning.

So uhhh why not, I dunno, think of things to do with your kids and spend some time with them? You're the dad, tell them to get off the PlayStation once in a while!

So I was playing Dragon Age: Inquisition, and enjoying it. But I got a new graphics card at the weekend and was messing around with 'ultra' settings in a few games, and Witcher 3 dragged me back in within a few seconds. So I've now (finally!) started Blood & Wine. Posted Image

TW 2 gets progressively easier as you level.

First of all, you start out handicapped where you take bonus 100% damage from flank attacks, and it requires 2 upgrades to reduce that to 0 (1st takes it to 50)

Secondly, eventually, early in the actual Swordsman tree, you get to learn riposte, which gives you an opportunity to counter + insta-kill most opponents, if timed right.

There's also the "increased roll distance" , which is nice, but the since it's pretty much the only defensive move (outside of blocks, but each block eats stamina, so that's a highly limited method), you are doing A LOT of rolling. Which is pretty awful in tight spaces, where the increased roll distance actually works against you, allowing you to get boxed in next to walls very easily.

Frankly, the entire prologue and Act 1 is a grind to make Geralt not fight like shit. What CDPRED did with the choices and Act(s) II is remarkable, and it's an action-RPG that's definitely worth playing, but it's not an amazing game in its own right- both TW1 and definitely TW3 are more fun and interesting games. (TW1, despite being simplistic and janky, polished it's limited systems so that on hardest difficulty the combat
is an insane rhythm game, basically. And its story is much better + way more interesting side quests, although much more MMO-y "fetch 10 Barghast skulls" , too)

Yeah I found W2 baffling at first. That lack of a lock on makes the combat strange at first but when you realise how free that makes you you'll find yourself diving and slashing through quite large groups without taking much damage.

It's pretty annoying that the answers have a timer. I like to choose a path, and the wrong answer at the wrong moment can potentially send you on a completely different route through the game, with a different outcome. Make sure you have a few saves before you talk to people in the main quest, I guess.
So that's the story. And what was the real lesson? Don't leave things in the fridge.

Prey is great! There are some truly unforgettable moments in that game. Not to mention one of the best openings.

The girlfriend has gotten really into Injustice 2. It looks fun, but I am terrible at it.

Im about 3 or 4 hours in. This game is hard. I am loving it but its hard. Maybe I am trying too hard to conserve ammo but phantoms are murder machines. I even have a shotgun earlier than the game might have intended because of some limited edition or other reward thing.

Ia ctually hate when games do this. If you give me a shotgun I dont have the discipline not to use it but I always worry they change the way the game is meant to be.

I actually find Prey easy. Especially if you quick save before a fight you're unsure of how will unfold.

Almost every encounter can be handled efficiently by doing a quick and brutal take down. Forget about using the gloo gun. Just wait until the baddies look the other way. Then either dump a clip from the hand gun into them or run right up on them and unload your shotgun into them. For extra effect smack them with the psychic detonation ability.

I find that everything can be killed quickly except the Psychic or Technopath flying lumps or of course the Nightmare. And those big guys you can usually cheese by using small rooms or corners to kite them into a tactical advantage.

However the game is incredibly unsettling. Even though I know I can handle anything the game throws at me, I am still constantly worried about the jump scares and the oppressive atmosphere.

Finished Prey earlier today.

I ended up doing a bunch of different things to get various endings for the game. I loved the multiple choice approach to the fate of the stations inhabitants and the Typhon. However I think the games ending was disappointing.

My circle of friends have loved Netherrealm's games ever since their Mortal Kombat. By which I mean, we're all super-awful at fighting games (though experts at crouch, uppercut spam), but enjoy the crazy over-the-top story and super moves. Film studios should just get Netherrealm to write their scripts.

So obviously we got Injustice 2 as soon as it came out and played the story mode in a marathon session over the weekend. Very enjoyable as always, possibly slightly better than the previous Injustice story, certainly longer than the somewhat disappointingly brief first one (but had nothing to beat the Superman killing Shazam moment in that one). The first Mortal Kombat story is still the best one though (and by far the longest I think). They've made Wonder Woman into a complete sociopath which...was an interesting way to go!

I've finally started playing through my enormous backlog of PS download-only games (I think I have about 170 bought across various sales over the past couple of years). Just going through it alphabetically.

Played Abzu - somewhat unfairly, if also understandably, described as Journey under the sea. Great atmosphere, and amazing musical score. Not in the least challenging, but obviously, that's not the point.

Then played Adrift (or Adr1ft if you must). At first the finnicky controls annoyed me as I continually bashed against everything...before realising that was the point. Once I stopped holding down a direction, and instead just applied occasional bursts of thrust and let the momentum float me along, it was much better. The game itself has some repetition, but all in all I really enjoyed it, and I'm glad they didn't swerve at the last minute from the story which appeared to be being told.

Now playing Alienation. Seems A LOT like Helldivers, only not as slick in presentation but with more of an actual story campaign.

I really love how they've managed to make not only Superman but also Wonder Woman be genuinely interesting characters.

Also, the facial animations of that game are incredible. I wanted the campaign to be much longer.

Finished Witcher 3: Blood & Wine. Feeling bereft, so picked up Darkest Dungeon in the GOG sale. Rather enjoying it so far.

Life is Strange is free on PS-pluss. I played through ep 1 yesterday and am intrigued.

It only gets better. I actually ended up only playing half of it and watching the rest in a let's play. The game was too emotionally intense for me to endure playing past episode 3. I just felt drained after an hour of play.

I adored the way they managed to translate American youth culture and just life in general, as seen through the eyes of a teenager, into a video game. Walking around looking at the little details they put everywhere was really engrossing. And the music always hit me just the right way. They used it masterfully to set the mood or make a transition.

Don't really know if I want to play the prequel they are making. I feel like I experienced the story and I had closure.

I've taken advante of EA's free week of EA Access to their vault of games. I've been playing Sim City and Garden Warfare 2.

Sim City is okay but I see why people were disappointed in the game when it first came out. Everything feels dumbed down or just stream lined to the point where most of the game is automated. At least in comparison to what I remember from playing Sim City 2000 on the playstation.

It's also really frustrating that the map is so small. You run out of space almost instantly. And now that the game is old, there are no multiplayer towns I can buy ressources from. I'm not going to build and manage multiple cities, just to create the synergy I need.

Garden Warfare is surprisingly good. It's basically the Plants vs Zombies concept taken to an extreme. The amount of characters, items, buildings, abilities, etc. they've crammed into the game is amazing.

It's obviously a kiddy friendly shooter but again, it's surprisingly solid. It's not as advanced or fast as say Battlefield or Halo but it's the kind of game you can pick up and play with ease. The controls are tights and the abilities are limited to a few easy to understand abilities.

I can't see myself grinding away at the game to unlock all the characters and abilities but if I had played this as a kid I would have loved this.

Also played some Wolfenstein: The New Order. After seeing the trailer for The New Colossus I felt in the mood for killing some cartoon nazis.

This game plays amazingly. Compared to Garden Warfare 2 above, Wolfenstein feels like a God tier shooter. It's fast, brutal and versatile. The story just goes. I've made it to the future and and am currently planning to rendevouz with the resistance.

Think I might end up beating this game one more time. This time I'll pick young Wyatt's timeline.

Darkest Dungeon has well and truly got its hooks in me. I'm trying hard not to get too attached to any of the characters cos I'm expecting them all to die sooner or later, but it's hard not to when they're all developing so well at the moment. Only four deaths so far but it's early days. I somehow managed to go into a 'long' dungeon last night without any torches (stoopid!) so ended up doing a 'no light' run just for the heck of it. Had my best Highwayman in the party, who maxed out on stress and became masochistic and wouldn't accept any healing. It was both funny and tense. I was sure he was going to die but they all made it through in the end. Great game Posted Image
