Defiance- Thats the thing though mate I dont know anything about pcs so would be worried about being ripped off/breaking it. Its a nice idea and I would love it just for the mods as you say aswell as Steam stuff. But how much of an investment would it be? Like how much would it cost?

You can build a pretty damn good computer for around $1000. That's what I built mine for (i5 sporting a GTX 770).

Mario Kart 8. Hell of a lot of fun. Haven't really played one of these since the 64 version and I must say, it's a blast.

Since my Dark Souls 2 journey came to a halt in Draingleic Castle the other day, I've been playing something lightweight: The Wolf Among Us Ep. 4. I just adore the style of this game. Really, even though it's a Telltale game and there aren't that many meaningful choices to make (nor do different dialogue options open up significantly different situations) - despite all that I rather enjoy this interactive movie. i get to beat people to a pulp, get shot a dozen times in each episode, and converse with Colin, one of the Three Little Pigs and possibly my favourite Fable. Kind of reminds me of Fahrenheit/Indigo Prophecy, only without the possibility of dying in horrible ways.

The Fade bits were awesome, very unorthodox I'd say. Loved the deep roads to bits too. DA:O was brilliant - it's DA2 that was lacking. Building and gearing your characters meant a lot and could be the difference between living and dying. And for certain, I'm a fan of no streamlining, way too many games are these days.

I haven't gotten to either Deep Roads or the Fade yet. I'm @ Redcliffe Castle and I have a chance to see what the Fade is like right now, but I'm choosing to go and try to get the Magi first, so as to avoid killing any of the main chars involved (Also, I'd need to send Morrigan into the Fade, as my Grey Warden is a Rogue, and I'm not sure she's leveled enough to handle that) Seems I'm saving the dwarves for last. Already did Return to Ostagar, so I've got some powerful gear, now I just need to level up my party so that I can use it, :wallbash: I tend to get OCD with RPGs, so right now I'm putting together a mage-hunting party capable of fighting the Revenants in the elven forest, leveling my characters to get the skills necessary to do that. Overall, I'm enjoying the game and the trial and error strategy of combat.

Did you hear they're making a sequel now? They're adding a bunch of new breeds and will open for more sophisticated grooming. the AI will also be improved so that we don't get more of the infinite feeding cycle and such.

Still say it would have been better to be an employee of an Alpaca grooming service. So many more opprtunities for cleaning methods based on the quality of their wool and they are way more active than dogs who were mostly domesticated and pretty boring in this game. Maybe the truncheon will get more legitimate use next game, but in this one there was no visible effect from using it on every animal, they were almost all already docile. :wallbash:

Did you get the Rescue Dog DLC? Some of the mastiffs could be rather challenging when you started on the conditioner.

Been playing WildStar. The lady bought it last week and I made a character on her account to screw around. Now I'm level 25 and wish I'd purchased an account of my own. I'm having a lot of fun with the game, and it definitely has potential to be a long term investment. Current thoughts:

+All skills require targeting. Makes positioning important and should be very fun in PvP
+Limited number of skill slots (8), each class has about 30 skills. Reminds me of the original Guild Wars, and it's what Guild Wars 2 should have done
+Art style. The game is vibrant and beautiful. Zones look fantastic
+An actual sense of exploration that I haven't felt from MMOs in a long, long time
+Player housing that allows a shitload of customization

-Tutorial system is fucking awful.
-UI sucks ass, particularly the various menus (such as crafting). The quest log is terrible. Also, why does every fucking MMO feel the need to rename core attributes?
-Zones, while beautiful, are too cluttered with quests. There's simply too much shit on the screen at once too often. I can't go 20 feet without finding a new god damn quest. While some are fun, too often it feels like it's only there to draw out the leveling experience so that people don't get to end game too quickly. Definitely nothing revolutionary on this front.

Looking forward to the raiding in this game, it looks pretty nuts.

I have not played much of Watch Dogs yet, but so far I will say this: the cars are nuts. My character is lead-footed beyond belief. And the physics are terrible. XD

I mean seriously, he floors the accelerator no matter what you do - almost like he's TRYING to draw attention to himself. And the cars themselves all seem to have ridiculous acceleration...and fairly average handling. Don't get me wrong - this isn't inherently a bad thing; but when you're trying to just drive from A to B, it's kind of annoying. I had a similar (but less extreme) problem with GTAV. It also appears that there is no 'walk' button on computer. Which is frustrating in a similar manner.

At least you do appear to be able to play missions stealthily. That's a plus. The skill tree feels like it will be dead easy to max out, though, considering you start with like 5 points to spend, and there aren't all that many options (it's not a poor selection, it just doesn't feel like even the two-or-three point ones are going to be too expensive to take).

Anyway, will play more when my ridiculous hours at work allow me to...possibly next weekend. Maybe. *sigh*

Also purchased (but still downloading) the new Wolfenstein, which should be interesting.

Because it was made for the responsive triggers of the consoles. You can barely pull the trigger in and go slow, or you can jam it all the way and get that leadfoot.

I'm assuming you don't have the equivalent with your PC. Maybe if you have a pedal peripheral?

Just finished Child of Light. A super fun platform/rpg hybrid with a unique aesthetic to the environment and visuals. It's like playing a fairy tale.

What did you think of the difficulty and the fighting mechanic? I've heard a lot of people saying the game is way too easy, even on hard.

The difficulty was not that challenging. I play games on normal mode initially. I have not played Child of Light on the most difficult mode.

"Normal" mode did not give me much of a challenge as I traversed through the world. There are challenging battles though (in normal mode). I will let you discover those.

About the fighting mechanics, I enjoyed it. I liked the combat timer bar. The combat bar requires you to think about your team and their abilities. Knowing each members strengths will give you an advantage over the enemies you face.

Yeah, it wasn't even that great looking when it came out, especially on consoles. Not a bad game by any means, although I never really felt it lived up to be the "Baldur's Gate 2 spiritual successor" that everyone was toting it as.

I've been thinking about picking up Child of Light if for no other reason than the beautiful art direction.

I'm a short way through Child of Light. It does of course look beautiful, and simply flying about is enjoyable due to the animation and physics..

The combat is pretty simple and I haven't run into any trouble yet, although I can see how it could get harder with different combinations of enemies. In a way though, I'd have been happier with more Limbo-esque puzzles set in the landscape.

Also been playing a bit of Shadow of the Colossus. This was so weird and different when it came out; it still looks amazing design wise, but it seems so easy now. The creatures still look awesome though.
So that's the story. And what was the real lesson? Don't leave things in the fridge.

Over the past couple of weeks I've played through Wolfenstein, Watch_dogs, Ubersoldier 2 and Octodad.

Wolfenstein was fantastic. It's a really solid shooter that manages to blend old ideas with new ones. It's faithful to the original game in so many ways from the character design and the level maps, to the little details like the "Get psycked" intro, picking up health and armor and eating dog food. The gameplay is excellent and the length of the game feels pretty generous, clocking in at something like 20 hours for my initial playthrough. Really well written storyline and great characters. Only real let down to the game in my opinon is that there are inconcistancies in the story here and there and all the stuff about the "secret technology" and the hidden jewish order is never actually explained properly.

Watch_dogs was great as well. At the start it was hard to ignore all the criticism. There story is stupid. The vehicle handling is awful. Tons of little flaws that have been ironed out of other modern sandbox games are apparent in this one.

But the more I played of Watch_dogs the more I liked it. The story gets better the further in you get (all though it remains dumb) and you get a better feel for what kind of a man Aiden really is. The whole game makes more sense if it is seen as an origin story.

The gameplay also really grows on you. It's obvious that this game is built on the Ubisoft open world formula. If you dislike the way Assassins Creed and Farcry 3 does their open world design, then this game will probably also annoy you but it's made a lot of improvements.

All the worlds collectibles and side missions are tied to the games hacking mechanic and Aidens "job". Unlocking "towers" involve infiltrating a compound and getting into the master server. Unlocking hubs involves navigating sometimes entire city blocks where you hunt down junction boxes and navigate a buildings geometry. It's a really smart environmental puzzle.

Similarly, the "gang" missions play out like the Pirate fortress takeovers in Farcry 3. There is something quite thrilling about those missions. You can go in sneaky like an urban ninja, shooting people in the face with a silenced pistol or you can go in loud, having prolonged firefights with people urban combat style. That stuff is highly satisfying. It feels like playing the movie Heat, when you are ducking and dodging between cars firing automatic riffles at enemy cars, etc.

Ultimately I ended up liking this game a whole lot more than I expected. I think they could have made the game a lot more intelligent by having you pick what kind of character you wanted to be, based on your actions. For example in one side mission I had to track down sextrafficers. I executed every last one of those guys even though I wasn't prompted to and got bad karma for doing it. There's a lot of ambiguity in the gameplay. I hope the next one takes this into account.

Ubersoldier 2 is a bad game but I enjoyed playing through it. It's a low(ish) budget FPS set during World War 2. You're some kind of special agent/super soldier who is hunting down super nazis. The game is dated as all hell and the game mechanics are awful. You need to earn a hell of a lot of experience points to put into your accuracy before you can even hit anything, which is just plain bad game design. But it's a game where you run around shooting Nazis so really, what's not to love about this game? Interestingly the game uses comic book cutscenes instead of animations. They're kind of similar to Tintin or Modesty Blaze. The effect on the story is surprisingly good, to the point that I actually got a much better impression of the game just from enjoying the artwork.

Octodad: Dadliest Catch was an absolute delight to play through. Put simple, everything in that game comes together to form a videogame that is close to being perfect in my opinion. The gameplay is stupid and silly and it's highly amusing. The story is simple but clever and the character interaction is surprisingly touching. Somehow this tiny indiegame manages to have a better story than 95% of games on the market. Similarly who ever was in charge of the artwork and character animation managed a whole lot with very little effort. Octodad is a remarkably expressive octopus.

I'd recommend anyone who has 3 hours to spare to play through this game.

Currently I am playing Waking Mars and Deadfall Adventures.

Waking Mars is an OS port about a scientist astronaut exploring caves and fauna on Mars. The gameplay is very basic but the interaction between objects becomes pretty complicated. Surprisingly good story with more depth than you expect.

Deadfall Adventures is a B-movie videogame adaption of movies like Indiana Jones, Alan Quartermain and Romancing the Stone. So far the game seems surprisingly good considering how little attention it got and the middling score. Shooting Nazi's and solving tomb puzzles works pretty well so far.

XCOM: Enemy Within...

So I picked this up on the Steam Summer Sale, and I must say.... I'M GLUED TO THE SCREEN.
Why?

MOTHERLOVIN' MECH TROOPERS! MECH TROOPERS!! AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRR! SO AWESOME RAWGRGR!

I really had to force myself away from the screen to get some sleep, I just keep going mission to mission, the whole "just 1 more turn" thing finds home here and I love it! I'm loving it!
I've lost three people so far, twol of them to those goddamn Chrysalids in one mission, one to an enemy operative sniper (new thing in DLC).
I must say there's that one new mission where you explore a run-down port and it turns out them xrays infected shark corpses and an entire freight ship to spawn chrysses, you end up calling an airstrike in and hightailing it out of there. Magnificently paced, you go into the ship to activate a beacon while holding back continuously spawning uglies, then you have 8 turns to get your people out of there to the oh-so-far-away landing zone for evac. I was barely on time, with just 1 more turn unti the airstrike levelled the aea when I finally reached the evac zone while running and gunning.
Nothing beats the sight of a chryss popping out of a shark corpse.
It is not the critic who counts; not the man who points out how the strong man stumbles, or where the doer of deeds could have done them better. The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena, whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood, who strives valiantly; who errs and comes short again and again; because there is not effort without error and shortcomings; but who does actually strive to do the deed; who knows the great enthusiasm, the great devotion, who spends himself in a worthy cause, who at the best knows in the end the triumph of high achievement and who at the worst, if he fails, at least he fails while daring greatly. So that his place shall never be with those cold and timid souls who know neither victory nor defeat.
