Played a bit of Metroid: Samus Returns over the weekend. So good to have a 'proper' Metroid game after the last couple of releases were such rubbish.

Also continuing with XCOM 2: War of the Chosen.

Almost enough to make me want a 2DS. 'Troid is love 'Troid is life.

It's good on the 3DS, too - it gives a lovely depth to the environments, and you always have the option to turn the 3D off if you don't like it.

I hear people have been bawbagging about the 360 degree aiming. Thoughts?

I haven't really had to use it as yet, apart from the tutorial bit. I'm less sure about the counter move, tbh, but I'm getting used to it.

How exactly does this work, then? I would assume that you trigger counter stance, it activates a guardpoint for x frames, and that once those frames pass, you're vulnerable and can be hit out of it? I'm used to that sort of thing on fighters already anyway so it'd make sense to me that way.

It's not a stance, just a timed button press. Some enemies have a tell that lets you know when they're going to charge Samus and if you press the X button with the right timing you can hit the enemy with a melee attack before it hits you, leaving it temporarily vulnerable to a more powerful beam attack.

I've got a giant backlog of PS4 games to play, so I went and picked up a goty edition of fallout new Vegas for the 360. Good choice.

Total War: Warhammer seems pretty fun.

I don't really know much about Warhammer but the Total War games were always good fun. (Rome Total War is actually one of the greatest games ever made...)

I'd be willing to give it a go when it gets a bit cheaper...

Haven't really played anything recently besides Fallout Shelter that could keep my attention for long.

I finished Batman: The Telltale Series: Season 1 earlier this week. It's a disappointing and mediocre take on a chose your own adventure Batman story. While the little changes to the "Batman: Year One" story were interesting enough to make me finish the game, the writing was frustrating. The dialogue combined with the atrociously outdated character animations made for a strangely un-batman-like Bruce Wayne. Instead of the solemn fanatical ninja detective savant we've grown accustomed to, they presented this wishy-washy low fat Bruce Wayne who had no teeth and seemed pretty dumb. I am shocked that these writers got away with this level of incomprehension of who and what Batman is or could be.

Played 5 hours or so of Steam World: Heist. It's a fun game but I found myself not really caring to finish the game. It's a 2D like take on a combination of X-com and Awesomenauts, where you play as a bunch of robot pirates fighting some evil robot threat thingy. The combat was surprisingly fun and the Steam World setting makes for a funny background. Just felt like it was missing some kind of real story or hook that have the game true depth.

What's really been dominating my playtime was Fallout Shelter. I've been spending an hour or two each day for weeks managing this game. I deleted it today. I'd decided I'd reached a point where I'd exhausted all challenge and built/advanced all aspect worth exploring. Really liked that game. I think it's probably the best crafted idle management game I've played.

At the end I had built out the entire area under the mountain, I had 200 dwellers, all at level 7 SPECIAL abilities or higher, all armed with laser pistols or higher. I had 25 or so dwellers constantly exploring the wasteland kitted out in metal armor and armed with plasma riffles. Half the vault was taken up by training rooms where I was constantly levelled up the dwellers.

I really liked the games feedback loop. I think that I would have loved to try an extreme version of the game with 500 dwellers. The time sink would be astronomical but I really liked the simplicity and reward.

I seem to have become addicted to Divinity Original Sin 2. It's sooo much better than the first game.

Played a few games.

I downloaded the free demos/beta for Lawbreakers and COD: WWII.

Lawbreakers seemed cool but the game is waaayyy too hectic for me to get into it. It's just another multiplayer shooter. If it had something more interesting to it, I might be more curious about it.

COD:WWII ran like shit on my PC. Now, granted it's getting old, but it just kept crashing even on low settings. From what little I actually played, it seemed like more COD multiplayer. Like the last many iterations, I'll wait for the game to drop in price and just play the typically great campaign.

Also played Sonic Adventure DX. This game is interesting. I never played any of the 3D Sonics when they came out but I've certainly heard a lot of questionable things about the games. The game looks like shit and controls like garbage and yet... Sonic Adventure is sort of fun. It might just be because it's very easy but I find myself enjoying what little I've played despite its shortcomings.

Now what I've really been enjoying playing is Golf Story for the Switch. This game is great. It's a cute, little whimsical game about a guy who tries to relive his dreams of being a golf champ. You run around golf resorts doing challenges and performing trick shots. You wouldn't think it was possible for a golf game but Golf Story is really charming. It sort of reminds me of Stardew Valley. It's a low risk, low stress, easy going experience.

I do have some problems with the games golf controls. There's a lot of meters but I really don't understand how I control exactly how much oomph I give the ball. But as long as I hit the right markers on the bars I seem to hit the right spot so I get by.

You should check it out if you have a Switch:

I read a single forum posy that claimed that Wolfenstein 2 was running fine on a set-up similar to my PC-rig, so, because I have no self-control or fiscal responsibility I bought Wolfenstein: The New Colossus.

I'm keeping everything on medium and beyond the characters faces looking weird and the environments seeming a bit over saturated, the game looks and runs fine. I can only imagine how stellar it must look on Ultra. It does crash on me though for no apparent reason every 30-40 minutes.

Played a couple hours. It's wolfestein. The guns feel great. It controls well. It's funny and it's ridiculously brutal. It features a structure similar to the first game, with an opening level that introduced the story, teaches you mechanics and sets up the baddie. I has a segment that is every bit as brutal as that "pick a character" scene with Deathhead in The New Order.

Really enjoying it so far.

Ran into an area that crashes the game constantly, so I think I have to put Wolfenstein on the shelf until I either get a better PC or they release some optimizing patches.

Been playing AC: Origins in between episodes of Stranger Things instead.

AC: Origins is really, really good. I mean, it's still Assassin's Creed in many ways but the combat system, the expanded open desert world, the loot and treasure and much more makes the game feel like a new generation of game.

It's clear that Ubisoft took a lot of inspiration from Witcher 3 for this game. There's things to hunt, caves and tombs to raid, bandit camps to exterminate and lots of quest givers who have stories who actually feel meaningful to the character.

Haven't even notices Syndicate until you mentioned it.

I like the look of the setting, and it's only £14. How big is the game? I went off A.C. games after Black Flag, which was fun but suffered from past A.C baggage like eavesdropping mission and pointless collecting. Have they improved on this with Syndicate?

So that's the story. And what was the real lesson? Don't leave things in the fridge.

The collection of a dozen different trinkets and chests is still there in Unity, Rogue and Syndicate but it's gone in Origins.

They did change the whole eavesdrop and shadow system though. Now your eagle vision can look through walls and if you can see somebody through a wall, you can hear them. So now keeping track of NPCs is barely a problem.

I don't mind collecting if it serves a purpose, but AC has always been good at making you run about getting multiple keys for big impressive doors that just give you a new outfit or something. As well as the hundreds of chests and flags to extend gameplay time. I never had a problem with the difficulty of the eavesdrop missions, they were just boring!

I do love the idea of sneaking around London though. I know it's set a bit later but I'd just like to go around headbutting and knifing people while wearing a stovepipe hat, like Tom Hardy in Taboo.

Playing Cyberdimension Neptunia at the moment. Idea Factory and Tamsoft have gone to a lot of trouble to make this one actually FEEL like a party MMO (of which it's an affectionate spoof).

Gameplay is fun - it's sort of a hybrid between Warriors and Dragon Age Inquisition, can get a bit chaotic and the party AI is pretty wank (especially healers during boss fights). Noire is so bloody FUN in this. Command dash into spear rush. Oh my. The sound design is excellent too.

Shadow of Mordor

Game just begins like you put down the first game a minute ago and picked up 2. Just throws you right in, very little backstory or gameplay mechanics explained. First few hours felt repetitive and grindy, then the brakes on gameplay are removed and you can brand followers agaian and start conquering forts it gets fun. Having said that I have only conquered 1. I could potentially see how that by the time I am taking down fort five things could get boring again.

Despite appearances from trailers I also feel very little was added mechanically. The forts are just a slight evolution of the nemesis system actually. Also now that there is like a 100 orcs its hard to really keep track of favourites or hated enemies. Also the new mechanics like your glaive, or using it on mounts etc looks better than it did in the fist game but plays essentially identical.

That said I liked the first game. I like this game.

Tried Doom. Not a big of fan of the movement controls. I don't really feel like I have control of my character. I'm playing Metal Gear Solid 5, I've only played the original Metal Gear Solid on the original Playstation before this. It's a little different than I remember back in 1998.

Been playing a few hours of Shadow of War every week at a friends place.

Like you say it feels like more of the same, just expanded and adjusted. The story is forgettable and the characters are strangely ugly. Talion looks like he doesn't have any eyebrows a lot of the time.

The Orcs however are amazing. Just the addition of Orcs that actively hunt you and ambush you makes for a much more fraught and tense gameplay. You'll be carefully planning out your sneak attack and then just when you think you've got the upper hand, behind you you her "MAN FILTH!". I just love it.

I think the game has moved so far from Tolkiens themes now that it might as well be a completely different IP. The orcs are way too colorful, funny and rich in personality.

Doom as in Doom 4 2016? How can you not like the movement? It's so fast and fluid. Just keep moving, always be charging, strafing, mantling and jumping. You should be assaulting to Demons, not the other way around.

MGS5 is very different from every other game in the series. MGS4 took steps towards making MGS a more modern streamlined third person shooter but it's only with MGS5 that Konami perfected the formula. It's probably the tightest game of its kind.

My advice is that you should always be kidnapping soldier and stealing resources, to boost you research. Always be researching new stuff because it's very time consuming.

Should I just kidnap every soldier and his dog, or should I focus on only the better soldiers? I'm like, uhm, 4 % into the game. This is also my first metal gear. I am confused and entirely delighted by what's been going on so far
