Well, I guess it's all over but the baby-making.

Congratulations to the new Duke and Duchess of Cambridge (question though - isn't that a step down for William? Prince to Duke? Royalty is confusing.)

Rule Britannia and all that! Digestive biscuits and Marmite for everyone!
OK, I think I got it, but just in case, can you say the whole thing over again? I wasn't really listening.

Yes, an American had to start the topic because NO BRITISH PERSON GIVES A SHIT.
Hello, soldiers, look at your mage, now back to me, now back at your mage, now back to me. Sadly, he isn’t me, but if he stopped being an unascended mortal and switched to Sole Spice, he could smell like he’s me. Look down, back up, where are you? You’re in a warren with the High Mage your cadre mage could smell like. What’s in your hand, back at me. I have it, it’s an acorn with two gates to that realm you love. Look again, the acorn is now otataral. Anything is possible when your mage smells like Sole Spice and not a Bole brother. I’m on a quorl.

I FREAKING LOVE THE ROYAL FAMILY! Seriously, I do. We put it on a massive screen and had scones afterwards and people dressed up posh. It was ace. I know a lot of people dislike the Royal Family for whatever reason, but let me remind you of two things: Firstly, If we get rid of the royals, we become a mini-America. The Royals are part of what makes us British! Secondly, you all got an extra day off work. :p

The Royal Family is a real-life soap opera. They don't influence what makes up Britain nearly as much as you think they do. If it wasn't for the fact they make the country more money from tourism then gets spent on feeding their pompous scrounging swanholes I'd want them removed as soon as possible. And a mini-America? Really? Our entire national identity is based upon a bunch of German fuckups who had the good fortune to be born into extreme wealth and inbreeding? No, Tiste. No.

It's more of an addition rather than a step down. It's not like he stops being a prince or anything; he just gets a couple of extra titles.

I like the traditional stuff and the character it adds to british / commonwealth culture. At the same time it's kinda out of touch with anything going on in Canada, other than the fact that "god save the queen" gets sung on occasion here and there.

Overall I'm pretty indifferent and don't care too much about the royals one way or the other, but congrats to the duke and duchess from one human to another anyway.

My friend hates the royal family.
The 29th is his birthday, as was (is) the marriage.
We're buying him a commemorative piece celebrating the wedding for his birthday.

Laughs will be had.

Couldn't agree more with Illy.

I just awaiting the internet tropes/pisstakes for the next few weeks. That might be the only good thing to come out of this.

I'm with you Tiste, I think there great...

I think British people especially English don't celebrate our country enough. Everyone is so pessimistic all the time but today was just awesome...the whole world was watching and we didn't dissapoint.

When God save the queen came on in the Abbey I almost had a tear in my eye!!

p.s. Kate Middleton is fit and her sister even more so!!!

Both Middleton sisters are fit, id say kate it fiter than pipper though.

I mean yeh patriotism, royalty etc.

Seriously though I do like the idea of the royal family because it provides an essential Britishness. I will say that Hocknose is right in that the English do not celebrate enough. It wa St georges day recently yet more gets done for St Patricks day in England which isnt right.

Illy what I meant is that the idea of having a royal family is very ingrained in our culture. If we got rid of it, it wouldn't be good. I really believe that. Also, why do anti-monarchists keep mentioning the whole German thing? The last ruling Monarch who was actually German was George III if I remember my History lessons correctly... The name changed from a German one in 1917 for crying out loud... There hasn't been a drop of German blood in their for about a century! When are people going to start realising that they are just as British as the rest of us! Anyone else who was born in Britain to parents who were born in Britain to parents who were born in Britain etc would be quite easily considered British...

ha ha thats quality

no I know but no other royal family is as popular as ours around the world...I mean did you know when 2nd in line to the throne of Norway was getting married? I bet you didn't but I'd guess many people in Norway knew about and were watching the wedding today.

I suppose what I'm trying to say is we should embrace them and be proud of it rather than be negative all the time...

I'm with Tiste.

The Royal family serves a figurehead purpose that would cause major problems in Britishness if they didn't exist. I agree with the embrace and be proud comment instead of all the vitriol.

Why does it piss you off so much Illy?

...they aren't doing anything that causes British life to be shittier are they? Nope, I think they leave that to 10 Downing Street.

In fact, they got a holiday for the wedding didn't they?

I dunno. I don't think the Royals are hurting anyone and their story is endlessly interesting to me. I'd be more than a little upset if they weren't around.

In response to the 'They gave you a day off didn't they' line or argument.

I respond with, 'Let them eat cake!'.

I'm firmly with Illy on this one.

The thing I'll give the Royal Family is the excellent job they've done of branding and retaining some sort of position within Britain.
It's really the only Western Royal Family with any international recognition left compared to basically every other European Royal House.

Otherwise I'm rather indifferent to the whole thing even if the Royalty does actually affect Canada (see: the Governor General).

Our Governor General has been a joke for years. Michaelle Jean became a laughing stock for knowing nothing about what she was doing. How about Adrienne Clarkson Presents...herself as a piss poor governor general.

That said, David Johnston who's been in the role since Oct 2010 hasn't done anything stupid yet. Perhaps we'll have a good Governor General for a while now.

Meh, they're RELATED to every other European royal house though.

i like to think of them as an extended Mafia clan, with Lizzie as the Capo di tutti capi, and crazy Phil as her consigliere.
meh. Link was dead :(
