Piers Anthony is a pretty good fantasy author, but his prolific punsterism frequently gets to epic groan levels.

Piers Anthony has amassed an enormous fan following for works involving a magical land in which puns have actual magical power and innuendo/sexual things have effects beyond normal. There is an enormous amount of "Heehee, see what I did there" and not all that oblique references to sex or sexual things. For most young men in Xanth who haven't gotten laid yet, seeing panties will often stun and/or knock them out. It's somewhat satirical of 1950s era sexuality, but honestly, Anthony has basically let his fans take over what he writes by using the puns they send in to create sort of haphazard stories around them. The man makes money and satisfies a very strange demographic, but he hasn't written a book truly worth reading in decades.
The particular book you pointed out (The Color of Her Panties) was written in 1992. The Xanth series is still ongoing today and lots of people still buy 'em.
I'm speaking as someone who sort of liked the Apprentice Adept series, not as an Anthony hater.
