OK, fair enough.

For the obviously uneducated (that's me btw) can you please define the parts of the ad that were specifically ripoffs of BLM marches rather than every other protest march ever?

I saw stuff that could have been from anti war, Gay Pride and Occupy type marches for example. Or any other protest march.

The bit that made me roll my eyes was the handing over of the flower Pepsi to the cop. Which I'm pretty sure is a ripoff of an anti Vietnam war march.

EDIT: really interesting article about the process behind how ads in general and ads like that in particular get made. The last 2 paragraphs in particular resonate with the cynic in me.

https://www.theatlan...-ad-how/522423/

EDIT2: Now I think I see a bit of what you're saying. I hadn't heard anything about Ieshia Evans until I read the comments on the article above (the top ones refer to the flower scene as I did). But then again it seems a lot of people were unaware, so does it really seem such a BLM ripoff in that context if there is a decent level of lack of awareness of that image? Having said that I have no idea how aware USAnians in general are of that photo. Maybe it was just a coincidence? I do admit an ad agency should probably have done a bit more research/been across popular media a bit more.
Or as the article implies (or is that just me inferring?), maybe it wasn't such a mistake?

EDIT3: you guys have made me watch this thing on youtube 3 times now. :)
I did notice the 3rd time all the damn hipsters ... and when she rips the blonde wig off, she offhands it without looking, straight to ... a black woman, looking none too impressed! :D
(Just to be clear I'm not laughing at the black woman, just the sheer tone-deaf audacity. :p )

Pleasantly surprised I have seen (so far) anyone get narky about the woman in the hijab. A good sign that Muslims have just as much right to be in an awkward tone-deaf ad as anyone else?

favourite comment so far:

UnsinkingTheTitanic • 6 hours ago
The poor advert was so chock full of intersectionality and still managed to offend.

Bravo!

EDIT4: ... aaaaaaand continuing my masochistic urge to find out more about this exercise in social media shenanigans, an earlier, slightly more cynical article

Have you seen the SNL pepsi ad skit? It's worth watching. :D

Also, I'm not sure a white Aussie dude is a good measure for how well-known Ieshia Evans is. :) When I saw the ad I immediately thought of the image of her standing before those cops. I saw heaps of tweets, posts, opinion pieces about the ad throughout the day that made that same connection too but then I do have a lot of online friends who are African-American and I subscribe to a lot of afrocentric podcasts and blogs so my exposure to these things is probably greater than some other peoples would be.

I recommend reading this piece by Bernice King http://m.huffpost.co...4b0ee31ab9534a1

These are my fav tweets from all this:

Interesting (long) article about copyright law and why we probably won't have a single Library of All Books online for a long time, if ever.

Oldest Living Human on record

Impressed. And male to boot, which makes me wonder if the records are good enough. I mean, wow, we need to clone this guy.

I don't really think we want humans to start living longer. Preferably we'd all just automatically keel over at 75.

I think it will interesting to see if these kinds of numbers start cropping up more often. They say that the amount of centenials is going to skyrocket in the coming years because of the rise in living conditions and modern medicine.

I just hope I live long enough to upload myself in a cloud somewhere.

It is a hold over Hetan. That was the one word that she hated. So it was banned. We have just left it in place.

Really? F ruitloop itself, or just standalone F ruit? How about Pansy or Nancyboy?

Not sure if you're joking but just in case. Fruitloop is not a banned word. Fruitloop is a word that is inserted instead of the banned word.

The banned word C*U*N*T.

Even though Hetan doesn't hang around much any longer, I think it's still fun that we keep the substitution in place. It's a fun little reminder of an older generation.

Ah, I get it now. I was wondering why someone would object to fruitloop. :)

Now I feel like a dumb fruitloop.

I liked it when Grief banned a whole bunch of words and replaced them with Scottish and English words and euphemisms.

I think we also need to ban offensive words such "like," "the" and "town." I suggest these automatic replacements respectively: "completely not", "_", and "scum." We can work on another litany of stuff when this is complete.
