So you think Fiddler died and we just don't know it?
Trouble arrives when the opponents to such a system institute its extreme opposite, where individualism becomes godlike and sacrosanct, and no greater service to any other ideal (including community) is possible. In such a system rapacious greed thrives behind the guise of freedom, and the worst aspects of human nature come to the fore....

I would think that Fiddler would merit a death scene, especially if his body was going to be used as some sort of tool by K'rul and Mael to aid Tavore. Don't think it is a Bonehunter at all. Their bodies were getting eaten by the Nah'ruk, anyways.

My first thought was Bruthen Trana, to be honest, but when the 'feelings of guilt' thing came up I wasn't so sure.

In retrospective from BH camp? Why not. Surviving marines chat what they saw and "Yeah, Fiddler went down..." You just read ten pages with no BH POV. And DoD didnt offer end for battle.
But Fiddler is still my second and rather fearful than rational guess...but its possible, as I explained you...

I really, highly doubt that it's Fiddler... It's just totally random, aside from his connection to Tavore. Why on earth would Mael be in possession of Fid's body? There's zero foreshadowing for that. If anything we can assume that when Fid dies he'll link up with the other BBs and Iskar Jarak. As for Keneb, again I ask, how/why would Mael be in possession with the body/soul, and also, what do they stand to gain? We have no reason to believe that Keneb had any more insight into Tavore's mind than anyone else in the Bonehunters. Also for all their respective histories as veterans, I really see no evidence that would point to Fiddler or Keneb being trapped in a "nightmare of guilt" that Mael would see them "freed of." I infer from Mael's words there that it's an ongoing nightmare, which wouldn't be the case if it was someone who ate it in the Nah'ruk battle - would be a rather shortlived nightmare, right? Assuming that this exchange takes place within a reasonable amount of time following the battle.
Heboric seems like the most likely connection... Wasn't Mael somehow involved in the exchange that occurred in tBH with Paran and Hood that ultimately resulted in Heboric's 5 minute resurrection to take out the Jade Giants? Or at least, wasn't he supposed to be originally? Furthermore Heboric had a strong connection to Felisin, and though I can't clearly envision exactly how yet, I'll be damned if Tavore doesn't have to answer for Felisin in some way, shape or form before all is said and done.
Still, Heboric's soul is already quite animated as we saw in brief glimpses in DoD, knocking about to some end we don't fully understand. Does that conflict with what we see in this scene?
I truly have no idea how Hetan can say - with emphasis - that we should be able to easily guess. It's driving me mad.

All I kept thinking was... wowowowowowowowowowowowowowowowowowowowowo.....wow
But seriously there's so much in these first few pages. So much unexpected POV's as well. I gotta admit I didn't think Paran would show up this early, but I'm glad he is.
Regarding Icarium, would it be so ridiculous to expect that Mappo may find out where he is being held and go after him?
Cotillion dealing with dragons...because he can
Shadowthrone cackling and scheming... he's encouragable.
I'm guessing heboric as the corpse..seems logical...but hey who am i to say.
thats. all. for. now.
i need a lie down.

Heh, I just realised Kilava is Treach's mother. SO PUMPED
Hello, soldiers, look at your mage, now back to me, now back at your mage, now back to me. Sadly, he isn’t me, but if he stopped being an unascended mortal and switched to Sole Spice, he could smell like he’s me. Look down, back up, where are you? You’re in a warren with the High Mage your cadre mage could smell like. What’s in your hand, back at me. I have it, it’s an acorn with two gates to that realm you love. Look again, the acorn is now otataral. Anything is possible when your mage smells like Sole Spice and not a Bole brother. I’m on a quorl.

I too feel the sharp sting of shame for not having a freakin' clue who the body is. Hetan, please enlighten us. PLEASE!
When I read it - I didn't get the connection to the recent K'NR battle, I thought maybe it would be a body already in Mael's domain.
Feb 21 - hurry up!

Well, whoever this body is, he knows Tavore, and knows her more than most. Bottle or Keneb, perhaps.

this flashed into my mind as well. the whole guilt deal. but what would pearl know of the adjunct?
and as i was reading the excerpt for a third time, i'm thinking that what paran wants from ST is some deadly deadly backup. he ask after cotillion, then later, brings up something he wants and when ST says him and Cot aren't married, paran says he wasn't even thinking of Cotillion. so who else could he be thinking of? well, imo, it could only be apsalar, and maybe kalam too.

I'm thinking how many Heboric bodies we've Heboric seen being tossed Heboric into the Heboric sea wrapped Heboric up that Heboric might be Heboric relevant to Heboric Tavore's past Heboric like Felisin Heboric or might Heboric be Heboric found by Heboric Mael that Heboric Heboric Heboric Heboric Heboric Heboric could Heboric be Heboric significent Heboric. I'm thinking it's Pormqual.

Or the Hounds. Ganoes and the Hounds reuniting would be epic. He's still got dat mad dawg blood from GotM.
That also made me remember - how cool is it when Paran reflects on the Siege of Pale and it culminates with him saying "I miss him, you know" about Rake. Gave me chills.

I could see it being Heboric, but if it is I will find it weird, what with Hood having been able to use him already. Then again I guess Hood would be a factor in the whole dead-body-but-still-a-strong-soul thing. And knowing about Felision would be a way to emotionally affect Tavore, I suppose.
But, with Mael looking at Brys that way and saying that he *was* there, I'm more inclined to think it is Brys. He doesn't need to have been particularly emotional with Tavore in order to give K'rul the information to do so.

I think it's Lostara Yil. Guilt-ridden and close to Tavore and also Cotillion.

Did she get a sex change or was she just an extremely successful cross-dresser?
Anyway, this quote:
Damn.
Anyway, this quote:
Quote
Mael glanced down at the wrapped corpse. ‘Brys was there. Through his tears I saw.’ He was silent for a long moment, reliving someone else’s memories. He suddenly hugged himself, released a ragged breath. ‘In the name of the Abyss, those Bonehunters were something to behold!’
The vague hints of a face seemed to find shape inside the hood’s darkness, a gleam of teeth. ‘Truly? Mael – truly?’
Emotion growled out his words. ‘This is not done. Errastas has made a terrible mistake. Gods, they all have!’

There's a specific mention about his soul being strong though.
