So, questions for our actual wood workers (I'm vaguely aware we have at least one proper carpenter here)
I'm making a small rocking crib for my best friends incoming baby.
Out of maple again.
How to finish it? The dog's bed I just sprayed ihtly with teak oil but it that acceptable for humans or should I just Emery paper and leave it as is?

You might message Cerveza Fiesta and see if he responds. If i remember right he made the crib for his own kid, might even be a thread about it.
I would guess the most important thing is to use a paint or stain with no VOC's. There is a company that specifically makes crib stain, but i cant remember the name.
Shellac and Mineral oils would be good natural products to use as well.
Shellac is hypoallergenic and non-toxic and brings out natural wood grain really well.
Mineral oil is non toxic and creates a non yellow, soft surface. In fact, baby oil is just mineral oil with fragrance added. The problem with it is you should re-apply periodically.

Current home i'm building. Not exactly a DIY project, but i wanted to share. Just started the porch, then the porch roof, finally the siding and the exterior is done.

In a completely different vein, I made this cape for my September wedding. I made my wedding dress too, but I want to wait until after I have the professional shots of me in it before I show it off here.
This is the first time I have made anything that wasn't a scarf or a pair of mittens. After this, I feel like I can tackle much bigger projects!
I think I may have also developed a taste for the nice stuff. After making this in a merino wool and silk blend, I don't think I can ever go back to yucky acrylic ever again...

a further question.
Mum has this old 3 piece folding screen.
lovely iron frame that I'm going to touch up the paint on (satin black) but the plain white canvas material is just shot to fuck and needs binned.
so I have a load of thin light soft wood (possibly white ash?) in the garage, its 4" strips. S the plan is to replace the material screen with wooden slats, I'll paint them off white (have a tin of snow bound that will be perfect) and then paint some thing on the screens. I'll probably be leaving the slats a few mm apart each (maybe as much as 1/4") dimensions wise they're abut 4 1/2' tall and then 4 slats wide.
any ideas for something in a silhouette style I can paint on the 3 screens colour. I have 2 tins of paint in the garage as well for this, one is bumblebee yellow and the other a lovely blue. I can easily get a tin of black if it would suit better.

had an idea of possibly a rearing horse type thing
like these
two fold problem with this,
1, if I paint horses on them, my sister will want it
2, rearing horses on all 3? the 2 outside rearing at each other, what goes in the middle?
also, love the style of this one:
makes me think of disneys hercules style kind of for some reason.

Further design question.
Different subject piece.
Made a toybox for my neighbours daughter (her name is rose). I've painted rose on the front of it. I was going to do some Peppa pig stuff on the lid but I think it would kind of ruin it.
Anyway, the colour doesn't come across that well on this photo (its actually rose pink) but I'm thinking of adding a tiny gold or silver drop Shadow or something similar to either the framing or lettering. Or all. What does the empire think??

It needs something.
Gold would look better than silver with the pink. And somehow, shockingly, gold color is popular again.

went for a thin outline.
forgot to take a picture, its just been delivered to much delight.
Anyway, for my next project I had vague intentions of welcoming m best friends baby into the world with a rocking crib.
BUUUUUTTTTTT.....
well a lot of researching on the interweb has left me at a loss of how big to build it.
apparently the baby matress has to fit it perfectly because of reasons?
am I worrying too much about something that will only be used when the parent is in attendance?
i was just thinking of something simple like this:

with their family name carved into one end

DO IT!!!!
You could always buy some foam and cut your own mattress. Just make sure it is not too hard to get the crib sheet fitted in nice and snug underneath it. Or they could use a flat sheet and it would be fine for any size.
