Baruk an Acendant??

Hi all, just re-reading GotM at the moment and one part jumped out at me that implied that Baruk may well be an acendant...

He is chatting with Rake at one stage, and Rake comments:

"There are few who would argue with me without flinching. I am unused to being addressed as an equal."

To which Baruk replies:

"There are many paths to acendancy, some more subtle than others..."

this certainly seems to imply that Baruk is an acendant or at least a near-acendant...what are your thought on this matter? The scence is on page 439 of the paperback if anyone would like to know.... Posted Image

Just thought I would bump this.

Read the same part just some hours ago. It certainly implies that Baruk is an Ascendant. But why he would be one I don't know.

Or it simply implies that Baruk is on the path to ascendency......
why would he be one? I think it's a power thang...

This brings me to musing on Apsalar...
If lack of worship causes gods/ascendants to be forgotten, to lose power, then the opposite holds true.. the more worshippers the more strength/power whatever.
So Apsalar Lady of Thieves.... she is worshipped by.. err.. thieves.. :D
does their worship of her cause her to become real... ie. is the Apsalar who was possessed by Dancer about to become Apsalar the ascendent?

baruk is on the more subtle path of ascendency..hes not an ascendent....

err hetan.. ascendents don;t depend on follwoers for their powers.. only gods do...
and to be a god oyu need to have the want to become a god.. i don;t think apsalar wants to be a god now would she?
also her name is given by crokus.. so i doubt even if she wants to she can become a god... othewise any parents will name their kids after gods or any ascendent rename themself... to become god...
i think you need worshippers who knows who ou are and worship you for it

hmm.. I don't think I said that she was going to become a god, but I do think it's possible she could become an ascendant. Paran is becoming one whether he likes it or not.
I also don't think it matters who gives you your name - if your destiny is to fill a role - you can't escape it.
and by the way Treach/Trake is an ascendent with followers, Fenner was too...

Meh to get back on topic of Baruk being an acendent. I personally don't think that Baruk is an acendent. He is just one of those people who isn't scared of anything. He knows that Rake Wants to make an allience with him.

That's an interesting thought, but why would an Ascendant fear Vorcan as Baruk did?
And one by one the gardens died

Vorcan is a mortal, and as we all know only a mortal can kill an ascendant.

@ Hetan..

When does Krul say that ?

or was in a metaphorical sense which Krul sometimes speaks in as especially Kruppe ?

Spoiler

and in regards to the actual question.
No I dont think he is an asendant, he is trying to be I think though.

Hmm, Well remember there is a difference between a God and and Asendant.

And this comming from a particular god's Demise (until recent events) was due to the fact that mortals no longer worshipped him. there is of course Draconus, while not technically dead he did 'fall' by the hands of an ascendant.

But of course in the context krul was speaking, there were also a decent number of other elder gods that were around, none of which seem to exist in the current time, so from Kruls comment it appears that gods do for the 'most part' fall by mortals, and they mostly dont know it.

He does say that the blood helped strengthen him, but he had, for example, been visiting Kruppe in his dreams before then. I'm not sure where you got that thing about Mael from though. One of the later books maybe?
