It was the blood spilled in K'rul's belfry that recalled him.

the apasalar-that-was-formerly-sorry took the name apslar from the patron of assassins, who is in ascendant, or was on the path to or whatever

It could well be that Baruk is on the path to ascendancy... he certainly is a powerful mage and a damn good alchemist (re Duiker).

Concerning Apsalar I do believe she is on the way to become an ascendant. The Rope left quite some marks with his possession, pushing her towards it methinks.
