You may also not have seen it if you're anywhere near the spawn as new block types when added to the game only appear on newly generated chunks.

Wasn't intending to, this was my first attempt. It's got three decks, and the size turned out pretty much how I wanted it. The cabins at the back look good inside; below decks is suitably claustraphobic. The new trapdoors are great for this sort of thing too.

Might have to build another one somewhere.

Has anyone got far enough in the Nether to exit back through a different gate? I've been through, but always come back out of the same one, and have to walk home.

I am going to try upgrading the ram on the server by an extra 512MB. We are running at 1536Kb right now. Just trying to sort out the lag thing. If it helps then great. If not, I think the problem may be the bandwidth. I'll try that next.

Ok, it was only a couple extra bucks so I grabbed some more bandwidth while I was at it.

Server is running on 2GB of ram and about 33% more bandwidth than we had originally.

Please let me know if you notice a difference or improvement in general lag levels. Not that it's woefully expensive or anything, but if it's not making any difference I'll downgrade again next month to save the extra cost.

As a new person on the server I can't give you long term comparison but it is running way better than yesterday if that helps?

Yeah, that. Do we know why it keeps happening?

Nope...no idea why. Could be an error but check out portal rules and how they track to one another on minepedia. I think our overworld portals might just be too close to Kanubis' so the game automatically ports to them instead of the intended target. Overland portals need to be quite a ways apart to actually map to different underworld portals.

I've got a portal in my original base, which is pretty damn far from Kanubis portal. If the distances need to be even longer than that then portals lack any value as transportation devices.

The thing I find odd about the inclusion of the pistons is that Notch has said he doesn't want things like gears, axles, motors, etc. in the game. Yet, a piston seems to be exactly in line with the stuff he doesn't want. I really want to be able to build and elaborate water power or steam powered machine.

Well, the piston is binary - just changes between 2 positions like a door or switch. Maybe he's okay with that but doesn't want perpetually moving things, or things with lots of positions.

Something tells me that with the addition of pistons we're going to see a huge amount of lag. Not a certainty, but it just seems inevitable. Might be that the complexity of what follows their implementation may also create more lag than usual. Then again, if the code is efficient, I may be worried about nothing.

I think the key, as with minecarts, will be not to have any perpetually moving devices. I think if we make that a rule for the MP server, the occasional piston activation here and there ain't gonna hurt anything.
