I am heading over to Europe in October/November. My plan so far is to fly into London, travel for 4 weeks then head back to the UK for 2 weeks of visiting family.... and you people

My questions are basically, what is the cheapest way to get around? What must I see, given I only have 4 weeks(ish)? Places I should avoid/be wary of? Helpful tips and hints or offers to drive me around for 6 weeks

I most go in for cultural and history stuff, less for the partying and such (at least while touristing.... while in the UK I d not need to tourist... i expect drinkings!)

The cheapest and most fun way to travel would be by thumb. All though, I'd probably not do that in Eastern Europe. Or by night. Or in the area Tiste lives in.

You should seriously consider it. It's fun. And girls have a lot easier time getting pick ups than guys do.

I once thumbed it from Wienna to Copenhagen with an Australian, it was awesome.

EDIT: of course, thumbing alone I could imagine might be a bit more hazardous if you don't come equipped with Judo chop capabilities.

I would assume that the cheapest way overall, if you intend to visit several countries, would be by train. Check here for instance: Rail Europe

cheapest = by thumb indeed. But if you ever think about doing that over here, well, you'll be disappointed, unless you catch germans.
Thankfully I'm only like 12 km away from the german border so come visit! I've only got one bed though.

In Europe you can do anything with a guillotine and a little fondue cheese.

TRAVEL: Rail is easiest BUT if you want to get somewhere 'far' and work your way back, you might consider a cheap flight out of the UK to some far point in Italy, Greece, Spain or Portugal and work your way back to Amsterdam or Paris, from which it's easy to get back to the UK.

That's a highlite reel. There are a tonne of small off the beaten track places you could go but i figure that's a solid 4 week euroblitz.

Especially as Prague is in the Czech Republic...

EDIT: Although I would recommend going to Hungary anyway, particularly to see Budapest. Very beautiful city.

Interrail is probably best travel method, yeah. Berlin's good if you have money, I'm intending to go back soon and make the most of it.

I recommend Copenhagen, to visit Apt and see if he's actually real.

Don't miss out Spain, Seville if you have time, beautiful city. And Granada is an incredibly underrated little town, go see the Alhambra Palace. Rome's good, although a bit touristy so you won't get the "real" Italy so much. For that, go to Naples, which is chaos.

And use this time to build up your drinking stamina for when you visit us in the UK.

Yeah, don't be caught by the trap of portioning too many days for Rome. You need a day to proerly see the Vatican and its museum and another day to see the interesting bits of Rome and then GTFO.

Oh, and for the love of god, for Rome, Florence, Milan and more or less anywhere museum/artsy/touristy in Italy, go online, and reserve your tours or admission times in advance. Please. This will save you DAYS of your life spent waiting in line. i know, i know, you want to be spontaneous and go with it and do random stuff and that's all good but this will save you time to do all of that as opposed to waiting.

In the alternative if you decide to wait in line bring a camera, two books, your MP3 player and food and alcohol and try to position yourself near members of the opposite sex whom you wish to spend the next three hours hitting on.

As an aside, a friend of mine was so succesful at meeting backpacker women this way that he spent an entire week waiting in lines, chatting and getting dates/numbers/whatever. On one day he actually did the entire Vatican line twice for this reason. scoching case of herpes aside, he is legend. or possibly an idiot, the debate rages to this day.

Actually I'd recommend both. Hungary/Budapest (try one of the magnificent public baths) and Czech Republic/Prague. Beautiful cities both, with lots to see.

I'd second this. I got a free tour of Budapest as I was there with my girlfriend who was born and raised there, and there are some spectacular buildings and things to see there. I'd also recommend checking out the countryside around Hungary, some beautiful scenery. Spent a week in Prague with a friend not that long ago, and it's also worth checking out. Some cheap beer as well, which is never a bad thing.

You may be tempted by the French Riviera. I would opt for beachy parts of Greece, Italy and/or Spain instead. Altho i do think Monaco is all kinds of awesome in a James Bond sort of way. If you decide to stop in Pisa to see the Tower, jump off the train and jump back on. There is nothing else there. As a further aside, if you want to add at least one 'less big' city, Brugges in Belgium is a great stop. Brussels not so much.
