I rewatched that GIF frook posted and it occured to me.
Is it possible to copyright Jesus (or the entire Pantheon of Hindu Gods or Buddha)?
Now some will say it's been tried by the Catholic Church and that Crusades and Inquisitions were just historical versions of modern IP litigation lawsuits. In fact could heresy be defined as copyright infringement? Or it could be bad fanfic in some cases.
Yet there was no contractual or legal basis for owning the image of Jesus. So what happens if I go down to the notary or whatever and buy the image of Jesus? Do all the people who make Jesus paraphernalia now owe me a licensing fee? Could Iconoclasts have been people with amazing foresight to try and make sure Jesus could not be packaged and sold and owned by a single person?
Back on topic. Could I buy the rights to every God on Earth and beyond? There's no law that says I can, yet I'm sure there is no law that says I can't. Is it worth the news publicity and the probable deaththreats?
Could I option the experience into a movie and book? Could I simply become rich from the scandal? Could I found a new religion in which I am the Divine IP Owner to whom all the glory, all the power and all the licensing fees belong? Or would that put me at odds with Scientologists?
Should I make this a co-venture?
Also I'd have to copyright myself to myself to make sure no one buys my image to one up me.
Would this not be the apotheosis of corporatism? You become a bigger god by buying out others. So theoretically Procter and Gamble could buy Jesus from me.
In fact you could have the Small B Gods, The Mom and Pop local Gods, the Medium B Gods, the Big B Gods, the Multinational Gods and Conglomerate Gods and the Merged Gods (like Dragon Ball Fusion). It would be the greatest polytheism ever. With Vishnu pushing Unilever products while Moses drinks Coke.
Imagine the Pope not only forbidding AIDS infected in Africa from using condoms (apparently Ben 16 actually changed that policy) while trying to sell them Monsanto crops!
Imagine that world! Where Banks foreclose not only on your house but on your soul!

you can't copyright an idea. only an expression of the idea.

said expression needs to be unique, and you must show that you've exercised a minimla amount of judgement or skill in creating the expression.

I don't know too much about trademarks, but I suspect you'd have real difficulty proving how your particular product is uniquley associated with the name you wanna use as trademark.

Yeah, I can see how chat would deaden a virtual pub. OTOH, we are starting to see a resurgence in RP, which may uplift some of these structures.

I've created a list of malazan virtual buildings in my Appendix. The Watching Trickster of course being the prime gem on that list.
