not that it's a new game or anything, but I played through the majority of the first Portal game this weekend. I can't believe I never bothered with it before. What a stellar game.

I will definitely be picking up Portal 2, even though I spoilered most of it already.

Unsure where to put this so I thought id just put it here. has anyone ever thought about creating a Rome TW style Malazan map that would allow people to manage different factions? Im sure it must have been brought up at some point but I keep having visions of Jaghuts squatting on your land and ruining your crops. Also now we have Wert heads map that pretty much covers everything someone with a bit of computer savvy could give it a go

I really like M&B, been playing for years, but my problem with it is that the further I get into a campaign, the less fun it is - it really needs to revamp the way it handles seiges - but the more hopelessly addictive it gets. I don't want to conquer that last province, I sigh as I shove my way up that next singular ladder that took eight hours to raise, I groan as I have to spent 2/3 of my game time running about trying to protect the castles the useless AI left empty... but I can't stop.

I just about got myself up to a 35-man party in M&B, keeping people alive is a chore. I am even getting almost-competent fighting from horseback. Foolin' around in the Nord kingdom and taking random tasks... but now I got a bit annoyed 'cos I got a task to hunt down some Sea Raiders but can't find them for about a week now...

Think I'll wait around for a new war to start and I'll lend a hand to one side and back them up if a battle is nearing. Maybe that will get someone's attention.

Against a reasonable number of infantry you're almost invulnerable on horseback if you do it right. I like fighting on foot with a big fuck-off greatsword though, with a bit of sword/axe and board if I get swamped. I can kill people a lot quicker that way. I just got my first castle (I'm with Swadia who are assraping the Rhodoks), but I need to get some money first (I've rarely gotten above 10000), and build my renown.

Mounted archery in plate armor rawks, replenishing arrows from those you kill.

Although I got a nasty shock when I tried it in Fire and Sword. Got hit for 2/3s of my hitpoints by a simple bandit with a rusty bent musket. Even the most simple bands of brigands pack one to four of these guys. It seems winning battles single-handedly could be a thing of the past in this version.

Then again, I'm still unarmored, poor and have 4 followers only. We'll see when I'm in my teens with levels.

I'm really getting my ass handed to me in this game. Maybe because I went for 'realistic' saves coupled with knowing like nothing about the game mechanics. I've no idea what kind of unit is how strong, which bandits are how strong, what are the various factions' strengths and weaknesses, how to build my hero, finding tasks proper for my strength, how to balance my army...
And I should really stop trying to pick on Counts at lvl 4 with a 48 man warband. Seriously. I've so far gotten to -19 rep with Swadia and 0 with everyone else...
Seriously, how do I start gaining standing with a faction? I've already started befriending some villages and Jarls, but it seems helping Jarls with their war or sacking villages of the faction Nords are at war with doesn't seem to do anything (well, beside making me stinking rich).
I've been captured for the 4th time now, and I lost like 80% of my force in the process as I foolishly attacked a Count and the nearby Jarl didn't do much to help.
I guess I'm overextending myself. Should I just stick to hunting bandits for now?

Hunt bandits, move on to caravans - good way to raise a lot of money/experience fast, and many of their troops tend to be blunt users, so you'll get unconscious troops instead of dead ones. Pour one companion's points entirely into surgery to help with that, as well. For getting good reputation with Lords, the best way about it's to jump into battles in which your ally is either outmatched or even - also, go to the King and take out a 30 (or is it 60?)-day mercenary contract. Win tournaments with lots of bets on yourself for ridiculous amounts of money, and spend it on hired blades/mercenary horsemen until you have a decent-strength army of your own; Hired Blades remain one of the best melee units, and easily replaceable.

One more thing: I couldn't find a way to keep some of my units/heroes OUT of a fight, and that often meant my tracker/pathfinder was out of commission and I lost the bonuses...

Start making some renown, then after the mercenary contact if you have enough go to the king/sultan/whatever and ask to become a vassal. Then you get a town I think and it's much easier to go off conquering shit.

And yes, until you can field bands of 50+, don't attack lords unless you're a total badass on your own (you'll still probably lose all your men, but there's not much tangible benefit to bitchslapping lords around anyway).

By the way, I love one of my companions. Name starts with A...Alayel or something. I gave him a charger and a broadsword and he just tears shit up. Outstrips even me in kills sometimes.

This game looks retarded. I mean, line infantry combat was never particularly exciting, and it'd be tough to field enough friends to get a regiment together.

I came back from vacation yesterday and i've spent the last 2 hours checking out all the info Eidos Montreal rolled out last week about the PC version of Deus Ex: Human Revolution

here's 2 preview impressions from the people who got to play the first 10 hours of the game.
some minor spoilers in there, but nothing that tells the actual story

oh, and on top of this, last week they rolled out the new PC HUD, which is basically the old Deus Ex HUD, right down to augs going to F keys, and the toolbelt on the bottom of the screen, with drag and drop mouse action from the tetris-style inventory.

Aside from some issues (pre-rendered cut scenes, mandatory boss fights), the game is looking to be one of the best offerings of 2011
