Well, neither Arthas nor Saren go to such extremes outside the established system. Perhaps Irenicus suffers from being stuck in AD&D, and stuff he does is so ludicrously outside the ramifications for in-game combat that it stands out. Arthas, as other WoW badasses, is a bit different a case, since his not-much-cinematic-as-scripted-in-fight power would absolutely own the players if not for Cutscene Power of our allies.
Illidan would wipe the floor with the players if not for Maiev.
Kael'Thas would destroy the adventurers if not for his own arrogance and weapons enchanted by him/his people.
Kil'jaedan would vaporize raids if not for the aid of the blue dragonflight.
Malygos, as the Aspect of Magic, would romp the players if not for the aid of Alextrasza's brood, the red dragonflight.
Similarly, Arthas would've succeeded in 'harvesting' the very greatest champions of the world as his servants of not for his dad's spirit helping them escape Shadowmourne's grasp and mass-rezzing them, and Tirion Fordring breaking Shadowmourne with another legendary weapon that took the effort of numerous other characters to even create.
Saren... he doesn't do much that Shepard couldn't have done... he's a badass while remaining at a sane power level. It's what makes him awesome.

And... time to go home.

I'm completely sucked inn by Baldurs Gate II. Again. I fucking love this game. And this time, I'm gonna end that bitch in ToB. I've played both original and expansion at least five times, but I've never managed to kill the final boss in ToB. But now I shall.

How's that for a New Years resolution?

Really, that game has only three flaws:
1) It's AD&D
2) You can't stangle Imoen with your bare hands
3) It's not Planescape: Torment

Holyfuckballs. I'm playing through ToB at the moment as a solo mage and man is it hard. Especially those Hasted Fire Giants who gang up on me and smash through my Stoneskins like they were cheese. Plus they're immune to fire so I can't Dragon Breath their asses into oblivion, and 3 Horrid Wiltings in a Chain Contingency only works once. The only thing keeping me from getting crushed is my trusty Planetar.

Ok, so after finishing BGII with both a fighter/mage and solo mage (and started on ranger/cleric before getting bored), I'm looking for another retro RPG to play. Arcanum looks pretty fun, is that any good?

Try Gothic (if you can get past the controls :thumbup:)

I loved Arcanum. I played it many years ago and had a ball. Has the same type of playstyle as BG, but adds the technology vs magic aspect. I played a technology using dwarf who would scrounge in the trash to find something to make traps and weapons out of. it was very fun.

One thing I found. I remember that I hit the level cap very quickly, I'm big on exploring and killing everything I can, and had to download a mod to raise the level cap. Overall a very enjoyable game for me anyways.

I can second the Arcanum suggestion. Outside of Planescape: Torment, it's one of my favorite old-school RPGs. BGII was pretty damn good, but too much AD&D for me.

Having a less advanced computer than most (it was state-of-the-art just before dual-core was invented :( ) I've just played through Freelancer again. What an awesome game, and it inspired me back into huge open-world games, so I ordered Just Cause from Amazon, and it's just as good as I remember from playing it on the 360 4 years ago :(

I second that Freelancer was a very positive surprise. And not just the main plot - the open-ended gameplay you can do after you finish the story is awesome. Especially the 'fringe' systems are just stunning, and very imaginative.
Plus, you can smuggle as well as trade normally. Artifact runs from Corsairs into Liberty space were something awesome - sneak from wormhole to wormhole, avoid/fight pirates, bounty hunters, then finally security forces in the core worlds, all for a sky-high profit for a high-risk operation.

Not to mention the two Unknown systems.

Currently I'm trying to find as many wrecks as I can. Which involves a vast amount of doing very little, trying to find anywhere with radiation, since they seem to lurk there. Some awesome stuff to be snagged!
