I always thought those games should have two modes
Arcade mode for the casual gamer
Oh shit! Mode for people who don't mind a challenge and getting shit on on a regular basis

Not that I mind. I'm absolutely terrible at RTSs and Total War's abysmal combat/strategy AI is the only thing that brings it down to a level I can actually beat :) Looking forward to this one; cinematic ~emotional engagement~ stuff is all well and good, but hopefully the game underneath is as good as ever. After Shogun 2's quality, I have no reason to assume otherwise.

So sans internet I decided to purchase XCOM a couple of days ago, and man is that game fun. It suffers somewhat from a lack of variation in lvl design, but it's still great!

I've taken to naming my characters after forum members, which adds another level of amusement to the game. Macros, an assault marine from Ireland was a murdering beast and my first soldier to hit Major. Alas, the very next mission he stumbled into a group of Cryssalids hiding in the backroom of a liquor store and was subsequently eviscerated. It's the way he would have wanted to go.

Col. Vengy Boy suffered a much sader fate. Having recently led his squad through a heavy mission in an alien complex, he was forced to take a squad of mainly rookies to deal with an abduction attempt in Russia. The aliens were present in what seemed at first to be overwhelming force, and the squad soon consisted of only a severly wounded Col. Boy and an Iraqi rookie who'd conducted himself surprisingly well.

With a well aimed rocket Col. Boy leveled the playing field, and suddenly light was visible at the end of the tunnel. But no happy endings were forthcoming. The last rookie panicked under fire and in a fit of frightened shooting scored a critical hit on poor Vengy, killing him and the mission too.

Ah, naming issues.

Empire: Total War allowed this for ships. I went for actors and actresses, but at some point I ran out of names at the fore of my mind, so when I called one siege mortar ship The 'HMS Ron Jeremy', I kind of quit that habit too.

Marines might actually be a good way to deal with XCOM: both types of soldiers die like one day flies.

I'm experiencing surprisingly few losses playing on normal. I guess I should finish up and go for Classic.

With the mighty Bottle, a Chinese heavy and Cause, a SA Assault storming ahead, with the sniper Stone Monkey covering from afar, Mezla the support healing any wounds taken, and the Psycic mobile sniper IH dealing with the more unpredictable situations. I've been trying to use a lower lvl soldier for each fight to spread around some more experience, but it rarely seems necessary.

Sadly, he isn’t me, but if he stopped being an unascended mortal and switched to Sole Spice, he could smell like he’s me. Look down, back up, where are you? You’re in a warren with the High Mage your cadre mage could smell like. What’s in your hand, back at me. I have it, it’s an acorn with two gates to that realm you love. Look again, the acorn is now otataral. Anything is possible when your mage smells like Sole Spice and not a Bole brother. I’m on a quorl.

XCOM was surprisingly fun. Don't think it tops the original, but what does? It did a few things better and is well worth playing. Not sure what the replay value will be like, though :The Force:

This! The original, and especially 'Terror from the Deep', are two of my all-time favourite games. I'm really enjoying the new one, although it has been dumbed down (er, I mean streamlined) a fair bit. I miss having multiple bases, and them getting invaded by the aliens. Plus the inventory is so restricted. Still, it's easily the best game of its type I've played in years. I'm tending to ignore the 'priority' research projects for as long as possible, cos they seem to want to rush you through the game too quickly. I'm naming my soldiers after characters in the Alien films . . .

My only complaint is that the world feels too untouched by the alien invasion. I don't mind streamlined, though I would have liked a broader skill selection for each class. And the ship vs UFO combat is pretty uninspiring.

Been playing a lot of Dota2 the last half year. Man, I love that game. Can easily recommend anybody to pick it up if they like that genre of games. Also, I feel obliged to say LoL sucks in any message that discusses MOBA games.

I played a lot of dota(relative to the general populace, not high end DOTA players) back in the day. Twas a lot of fun, but the community was awfull, and everything I hear tells me it has, if anythign, gotten worse.

I'm intrigued by how LoL has set out to deal with it though, building what can pretty much be desribed as a player run legal system. At least they're taking visible steps to counteract the problem.

Regardless of what you think of the game, you can't deny that was a great idea. It's apparently a really effective measure. The community is a fair bit better, and some very large percentage of those that get told off don't reoffend. And they can just deal with so many more complaints than they otherwise could.

DotA2 and similar games... well, I loved me some DotA back in Warcraft 3, but only single player, and that was years ago. As I understand it, the DotA/LoL community isn't exactly easy on the newbies, and the learning curve is long with so, so many heroes to choose from... I don't know, man.

The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena, whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood, who strives valiantly; who errs and comes short again and again; because there is not effort without error and shortcomings; but who does actually strive to do the deed; who knows the great enthusiasm, the great devotion, who spends himself in a worthy cause, who at the best knows in the end the triumph of high achievement and who at the worst, if he fails, at least he fails while daring greatly. Ran through Dishonored and Xcom a while back fun ones next to no replayability. So its back to Hoi3 Their Finest Hour which really does make a difference but not enought to make the game worth it without heavy modding guess I'll have to either update or build anew for it.

I finished XCOM. Excellent game all in all, and I'll be trying for Classic Ironman next. Poor Stone Monkey, my insanely efficient sniper died at the very end of the last mission. His head was blown of by the weak willed Macros wielding his trusty alloy cannon.
