I've just pre-ordered too. I think the map is a nicer addition than some DLC that will be available to buy within a month anyway.

After all the effort spent on patches and such for Empire Total War just to make it work, I always get games on the consoles in preference to the PC ones now. Ok, there are in some cases more complex control systems on the PC, and you can mod the games, but the ease of upgrading just gives developers the chance to release incomplete, glitchy games.

I put Battlefield 2 on last night, for the first time in ages. Within the first few minutes, I got the jump on a whole squad - 4 of 'em, all peering over a wall, getting ready to move. I took them all out with the kinfe, from the furthest one back, Kalam style - what made it better was knowing that the first ones to die could watch on the 'who killed you' screen as I took out the rest! Great fun.

Yeah I'm not a fan of the releasing of glitchy games either. However it's because of that that I get PC games more. See, now they can release and patch glitchy games on consoles. And they really friggin' do. Whereas PC is usually gonna have better graphics, and depending on the game (and especially with TES games) you get mods. TES mods are amazing. And most importantly, if the game doesn't get much support or the company goes under, you can get community patches.

I spoke too soon anyway. I just saw that the PS3 version of Dark Souls in Japan is having problems, which will be solved by... a patch.

I'm still going to get it though. The game is made for PS3, and ported onto the 360 - apparently it required 'a lot of compressing' to get it on one disc. Anyone know how much that will make a noticable difference to the quality of the game on the 360?

Finally was able to look up the error code for the crash I kept getting when launching Assault on Dark Athena. My video card can't handle it, ;)

well, guess i'll have to find smth else to play.

Console games are not guaranteed to be patch-free clean running. There's still just as much pressure to release. But, since XBL and PSN will both automatically update them for you, I guess it saves you the trouble.

I'd hazard a guess that it could go two ways. Reduced textures throughout, or, if you do not install the game to your drive, texture pop-in or lag during gameplay. It depends on exactly what they did and how they did it, though. I imagine they won't want a noticeable decrease in graphical quality - something that cannot be fixed post-release - so they've probably gone for a high compression ratio across the texture files, which means of lot of rapid texture loading and unloading during gameplay - thus, texture pop-in.

Though that should cease if you were to install the game to your Xbox's HDD.

That's what I get on Mass Effect 1 +2. Game loads, starts, then the texture appears a couple of seconds later. And they are both installed on the HDD.

I'm can't make my mind up at the moment - although I expect the game will be slightly better on the PS3, I generally use the 360 more, and I'm far more familiar with the online Live setup than with the PS3.

Online opinions vary from 'there will be minimum difference, get the one for the system you use the most' to all the usual single console owners biased crap.

I'm actually kind of interested to see how it will do on the 360 - an rpg that involves actual player deaths, and respawns all the enemies when/if you decide to rest and level up weapons etc will be something of a novelty. It might do well as people rediscover what it's like to have a challenge.

Caved and picked up Alpaca Poppadom on Steam for £1.50. It's... a hilariously bad B-movie, really. Currently, my character is sporting a massive silly hat, lumberjack beard and aviators, everyone hates him and he constantly makes disgusting and unwanted passes at every female in the game. Having more fun than I ever did with Mass Effect, at least.

Beat Dead Island over the weekend.

I liked the game at first. You get to collect and make weapons, then free roam doing quests and destroying the undead.


Theeeeennnn after stomping about 10,000 heads gets not so much fun the game got kind of boring and the shitty mechanics of the game start to show.

The story is blah and the cutscenes are insanely laughable. Just bad.



So if you were to buy this game and play it every once in a while with your friends, it can be awesome.

If you're like me and play games every spare minute you get till you finish it. I had to power through the last 30% or so.

^^^ I just started playing. One thing that has struck me is that the distinction between campaign and the co-op (4 player max?) is blurred. I thought I was playing campaign, but other players were joining my game. Maybe I'm doing something wrong and didn't select the campaign option (don't recall there was that option though).

Anyway, the game so far seems pretty good (I'm barely into it). It is a lot like Borderlands relative to the co-op play, character you select to play and open world / quests and side quests.

I've also been playing Resistance 3. I'm about half way through the campaign. I'm having a lot of fun (I've not played the previous two titles in the series). The guns are pretty sweet, such as the auger that lets you shoot through walls. The scale is huge. Fighting gargantuan Chimerean ape aliens is very satisfying.

Yeah, its one of the options. When the game starts its preset at 3 public slots, you can change it to 3 private if you dont want people to join.
I've always been crazy but its kept me from going insane.

There's a prettified version of Jagged Alliance coming up - a fan-project made official I believe. I never played the JA games, but from what I hear, they were some of the very best turnbased tactical combat games ever, so this has me psyched.

It's also real-time and you can see every enemy on the map at all times. Bloody abomination, just buy JA2 from Good Old Games = with the 1.14 mod/patch, easily one of the best games ever, and it's still being constantly updated.

I posted that link in what I actually thought was this thread but must have been the game I bought today one. I thought it looked prety good. The level itself looked incrediby scripted which is bad but the mechanics seem much more fluid. I prefer more fluid stealth games tbh and ive just completed Hitman 2 again and its a bit clunky.

Hopefully the other levels will let you plan your own assasinations rather than have a more linear feel. Im sure they will actually as it was a staple of the games.

Cryptic Comet games are having a "never on Steam" sale to celebrate their games being rejected from Steam for "not being a good fit" (which I assume means they're not tower defense games or pretentious artsy platformers), 50% off both Armageddon Empires and Solium Infernum. They play a bit like a hybrid of board games and ludicrously complex turn-based strategy/wargames. Yet to really get into them, but they seem like great stuff. RPS did a sort of let's play if anyone's interested.
