So, deploying to Afghanistan, leaving tomorrow, and I have my Kindle. I also have a lot of money I'm willing to spend on books. SO! I need a book list, stat! I've read MBotf, all the Butcher books, and plenty of others. However, I need 7 months worth of books, and I read extremely quickly. So I'm implore of you, Malazan Empire, give me some books that are a great read. Thank you

Get Shogun and the rest of the books in the series (I think the series is called the Asian Saga)by James Clavell. It'll keep you busy and iis great, except for the last one. They aren't direct sequels so you can always just skip the last one, which is what I always do. HIstorical fiction at its finest in shogun especially.

The Gap Cycle by Stephen R Donaldson for some excellent scifi.

The Dark Tower series by Stephen King.

That's my address. And I love mainly fantasy novels, but Raymond just did me a great service. Historical fiction is great, historical books in general are awesome. Alexander the Great, Genghis Kahn, all those ancient crazy conquerors, I like reading about them too. I appreciate the thoughts, and the help so far guys

After you get a chance to get settled and the mail clerk gets his shit in gear ill sign you up, or give you the info so you can do it yourself, Ill get you signed up to this website that will get you put on a list to receive packages from random people in the US... you can click what type of items you would like and someone or some church will be given your name and they will send you stuff...

I used it my first deployment... maybe my 2nd... cant remember...

mail is always nice to get man ... finding ways to kill time is even better so books are a great start....

For good selections, there's always the Black Company novels by Glen Cook (if you haven't read them already). There's Heroes Die by Matthew Woodring Stover (and the rest of the Acts of Caine novels), Memory, Sorrow, Thorn by Tad Williams, American Gods by Neil Gaiman, The Mythago Cycle by Robert Holdstock, anything by Guy Gavriel Kay (particularly The Sarantine Mosaic). Umm...that's all I can think of at the moment.

Anyway, good luck over there, don't get blown up on us.

I would recommend Moby-Dick if you've never read it. It's long but the chapters are short, and it's really as good as novels get.
And The Princess Bride, whether you've read it before or not.
I've just read a couple of historical crime novels set in Soviet/Stalinist Russia, called Child 44 and its sequel The Secret Speech by Tom Rob Smith. They were neat because the setting runs counter to any kind of honest investigation of crime, let alone murder, since such crimes were supposed to be symptoms of the corrupt West and therefore nonexistent under the superior Soviet system.

I'm not too broadly read in historical fiction, sorry. And I don't think I could recommend any fantasy that wouldn't have already occurred to you.

As for reading, I would recommend:

SciFi

The Takeshi Kovacs trilogy (Altered Carbon, Broken Angels, Woken Furies) by Richard Morgan. If you like the trilogy, also check out Black Man, which is a precursor to the series.
The Night's Dawn trilogy (Reality Dysfunction, Neutronium Alchemist, Naked God) by Peter F Hamilton. If you like them he's written a couple of other novels.
The Hyperion Cantos (Hyperion, Fall of Hyperion, Endymion, Rise of Endymion) by Dan Simmons. The first book is my favourite SciFi book, even if you dont check out the others, I would highly recommend you read the first.

Fantasy

The New Crobuzon series (Perdidio Street Station, The Scar, Iron Council) by China Meiville. Each is a standalone, but there are subtle links between the plots of the various books, so try read them in order if you can.
Imajica and Weaveworld by Clive Barker. He's written tons of other stuff, but those are probably the easiest to get into.
The Discworld series by Terry Pratchett. Great light reads, try read them in order if possible, but keep in mind the series only really finds itself after the sixth or seventh book.
The Mistborn trilogy (Final Empire, Well of Ascension, Hero of Ages) by Brandon Sanderson. Elantris by the same author isn't bad either.
The Prince of Nothing trilogy (The Darkness that comes before, The Warrior-Propher, The Thousand Fold Thought) by R Scott Bakker. Opinion on this book is pretty divided here on the forum, but I really enjoyed them.

That's all I can think of at the moment. Remember - rereads of the series are always filled with something you never noticed before, so there's always something to fall back on

Whitechapel gods by S.M Peters.
The lies of Locke Lamora by Scott Lynch(which has a sequel, Red seas under red skies, which is ok, but not as good as the first, and the first reads fine on its own).
The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss.
Magician by Raymond Feist(opinions vary on where to stop reading Feist. I don't think i've ever head anyone recommend reading beyond the first two series, and personally wouldn't go that far, but Magician itself is good).
