Karsa, while still great, loses a bit of his awesome the second time around. When you first read about him there's this profound sense of epic excitement. His awesome one liners, when he shouts "Witness!", all of that; it kept you wondering what badass feat he was going to pull of this time. I still love him and enjoy his character, but, for entertainment value, he's best the first time around.

A character who I've found myself loving even more is Udinaas. I savor every scene with him, especially in RG. I really hope he makes more than a cameo appearance in TCG.

Cotillion is awesome. I think my like for him started in DG, when I found out he was Dancer, although that was more just admiration for an awesome plot twist. HoC really started to reveal what a good character he is, and then BH just blows you away with his epicness. The last scene, before the epilogue, where he has his head in his hands after the whole debacle at the First Throne is extremely powerful. Another character I loved the first time around and love even more now.

I really like Bottle now. I can't believe I never thought much of him the first time around. He guess when he first made his appearance, in HoC, I didn't think much of him and didn't realize he'd be a pretty important character. But anyway, he's great.

Smiles might be my favorite female character. The scenes between her and Koryk are hilarious, especially with how they evolve throughout the series.

Samar Dev is also a really good female character. Great interactions with Karsa.

Paran is also very cool. Can't wait to see him in TCG.

As for my revised list, I can't say this is completely accurate. I never have every character and every event in my mind all at once, so it changes. but:

1. Cotillion
2. Udinaas
3. Anomander Rake
4. Bugg/Tehol
5. Karsa
uhm, that should be 'stuff.' My stiff is never nihilistic.

Crippled God (the reason for all of this. his tactics, strategies, methods are epic.)
Kruppe
Apsalar
Tehol/Bugg
Karsa Orlong
Onos Toolan
Anomandris Purake
Lady Envy
Second Seguleh
Shadowthrone/Cotillion
Master of the Deck of Dragons
Disclaimer: The Toblakai in my nick is in no way Karsa but the spawn of a Thelomen Toblakai and the Otataral Dragon.
Disclaimer to the disclaimer: Thinks about his signature and wonders how on earth would a Toblakai and the Otataral Dragon...create offspring?

1. Toc the Younger - Name me one character who's been through more, Erikson seems to love heaping the tragedy on him...and keep him coming back for more. 'Toc...Toc the Unlucky' in RG broke my heart.

2. Udinaas - What can I say, I love me a cynical, world-weary character. And he's that rare thing in a fantasy novel, a major character who's just a regular human being but can use his brain.

3. Trull Sengar - A character of immense depth, noble to the point of foolhardiness, there was no other way for his story to end than the way it did. His interaction with his brothers and Onrack is one of the great things in MBotF.

4. Onrack the Broken - As if it wasn't enough to just have Trull, here's a character who's strong enough to stand on a par with him in every scene they share! Enjoy!

5. Anomander Rake - I will always remember that first moment in GotM when he first appears in Baruk's chamber - the immense pressure of power, the ever-changing eyes, the sword trailing chains of smoke...and the humanity in this wholly alien being.

6. Fiddler - If there was a hero in MBotF, Fiddler is it. The sapper who left his sword out in the rain, now a father figure to thousands of soldiers. Coupled with the fact that he can see the bad things coming, but never turns away, knowing that others need him.

7. Itkovian - Would MoI be the same book without him? I think not. He was the axis on which the story spun, SE's ultimate tug at your heartstrings.

8. Tehol Beddict - It says something for SE's skill that he can create characters of ultimate tragedy, and then characters like Tehol - classics for totally different reasons. Who didn't cheer when Tehol ascended the throne of Lether?

9. Bruthen Trana - A good old-fashioned Tiste Edur, about time! None of this pansying around with big moral questions, fiddling around with magic, or getting into long-suffering diplomatic debates. You've got a question? That guy's got an answer but is giving you sass? Then break his fingers :p

10. Quick Ben - Mysteries within mysteries, all wrapped up in a character who's natural, human, reaction is to hide quite a lot of the time. At the same time as having one of the biggest egos out there.

How could I choose just five??? :)

OMG how can you pick 5?? I find someone new to love in each book, and I'm only 1/2 through Bonehunters.

But here goes.... Itkovian, Duiker, Kruppe, Cotillian, Anomander Rake

I'm sure it will change before I'm done... but that is what's so awesome about Erikson :p

Serious lack of Kruppe love going on in here!

At least some people mentioned Tehol & Bugg :p

Tried to make a list but gave up. There are too many, just thinking about it makes me want to reread everything (even though I just finished my latest reread last night) and throughout analyse each character and what position they deserve xD

Tehol would no doubt be right at the top though.

Anomander Rake - The greatest fantasy character I have ever read of. Pure awesomeness.

Itkovian - True hero. I see his defense of Capustan in my dreams. Add to that the coolness of the redeemer.... I hope he (i.e. Erikson) is not yet done (with Itkovian)!

Osserc - Haven't seen too much of him... but any character called the "Champion of Light" is awesome by definition.

Karsa Orlong - At the end of all civilizations.... we shall hear the war cry of our deliverer - "Witness!"

mine are:

1. Iron Bars
2. Fiddler
3. Toc the Younger
4. Bottle
5. Trull Sengar
6. Bugg

I cant pick an order for them but there they are. Though there are a lot of them. I do like a lot of characters from Erikson so I think a question like this is quite unfair as I took a long time and then deleted other characters and put them up again with this thread! Boo!!

1. Anomander Rake
2. Ganoes Paran
3. Silchas Ruin
4. Quick Ben
5. Kalam
6. Cotillion
7. Tehol/Bugg (because you can't love one without the other)
8. Toc the Younger
9. Icarium
10. Mappo

and then basically every other character too...

Damn you Erikson for making all your characters so lovable!!! How could we possibly choose?

Woot!! Woot!! IB in Stonewielder?!!!! Sick!! Ok Im reading it before tCG. Damet it is set before tCG right? Yea Iron Bars in MT was so freaking good. I don't know though, I liked the interpretation of him better from SE than from ICE in RotCG. Anyways goddamit is SW out in paperback yet?

I dont really like those big hardcovers as they are annoying to read when Im in bed. I like to enjoy the paperbacks so I will just reread entire series so by the time I finish, ill be up to tCG paperback

@Sinisdar Toste : In your opinion do you think ICE's writing has picked up from RotCG? Though I thought it was a pretty good book in terms of book content, I thought Erikson's style of character potrayal was better though I thought ICE did a better job in explanation of malaz world events.

his writing itself has improved greatly, imo. much smoother and arresting in SW. however many issues have been divisive on the forum. ICE pulls some of SE's tried and true tricks, like not spoon-feeding us info, and not giving us a direct, 'here's that answer you all wanted' reveal, which seems to have infuriated some readers. apparently SE can be cagey and withhold much desired information and be a visionary for it, but when ICE does it, it's shitty writing. i liked SW, a lot, because i hate putting expectations on either SE or ICE. i let them tell the story they want to tell and take it on its own merits, not on the merits of how well it matches my desires for the story.

anyway, after that mini-rant, i would encourage you to read SW, because it does an amazing job illuminating the situation on Korel/Fist.

It seems that most people like the long-lived characters or those with lots of narrative. I guess my favs are the ones who didn't last long enough to become grating or maybe I simply like the fallen hero scenario...(with a couple exceptions)

1. Coltaine - Anyone who says the Chain of Dogs is not the best narrative in the series is simply wrong.

2. Icarium - Complex, good guy, don't piss him off.

3. Itkovian - How can you not like this guy. A martyr and probably one of the best written characters in the series.

4. Kruppe - We still aren't quite sure about him yet and he gives some needed comedic relief.

5. Tehol - Copy above...

EDIT: 6. Mappo - Was worth the edit to include him. But am I the only one who pictures a yellow skinned Killer Croc from the batman cartoon?? See below:

Posted Image

Except maybe Icarium in the headlock... Or hell who knows where this series will go, maybe Mappo WILL have Batman in a headlock at some point...
