Just finished this game. Excellent story. Perhaps the best told story I have ever witnessed in a game. Not the most satisfying one, but over all, from beginning to end I don't think a game has managed to remain as consistently mature and complex as the Witcher 2 does all the way through.

I have some questions about branching story lines based on the choices I made.

In the prologue I killed the noble man leading the uprising against Foltest (I forget his name). I read afterwards that there is a way to spare him. If you manage to get him to surrender or what ever, does he become the defacto ruler of Temeria? Would that have given the country the stability it needed to avoid splitting apart? Or would he just have been a different head of the military keeping things civil while the aristocracy did their negotiations?

I learned in act 3 that Saskia, the potential leader of a new country where humans and non-humans live in peace, died off screen. If I had chosen to go with Iorveth would I had been able to save her and would that have changed the summit?

I let Roche stab the shit out of Henselt, that asshole. If you let him live how does that change the events at the summit?

Was there any way I could have gotten to kill Dethmold? I really despised that son of a bitch.

I never finished the first game. Is there an explanation to why Geralt came back from the dead? How he escaped from the Wild Hunt if they had his soul?

Also what did you do in the epilogue? I ended up letting Letho get away with it. I admire that crafty bastard and want him to return in the third game.

if you negotiate the older LaValette to surrender, you meet him in jail. He burns down the castle to let you escape, and dies.

If you go with Iorveth, you eventually learn that Saskia is a dragon from the entire game. In Act 3, Sheil and Fransisca try to use her to taqke over, if you chose Iorveth (and you know the dragon's Saskia), you can choose to let her go, and you get some dialogue once she turns human again. (You also learn that she's an offspring of the Golden dragon from Zerrikania that you Gerald and Yen helped way back when (in the second short story collection. The 2 slayer guys from the prologue will also refer back to the episode--the Melitele's heart quest)

If you let Henselt live, he's alive and well to make Kaedwen's grab of Aerdin's territory. It's not pleasant. Letting him die is a positive option.

I think that if you take up the "save the youngest La Valette princess" quest in Act 3 (instead of the other one that Redania's king Radomir tasks you with), you get to kill Dethmold.

No, there isn't. It's an ongoing mystery, which should get resolved in Game 3. In the epilogue, if you talk to Letho, you should get a flashback, explaining that Geralt hunted down the Wild Hunt and gave himself up to them. How he escaped is a mystery. He DOES confront the King of the Wild Hunt at the end of the first game, but the King just gloats about how Geralt is his most loyal messenger (anywhere he goes, chaos and destruction follows), without revealing much. Game 3's supposed to focus on this question (hence the subtitle "wild hunt")

I've also let Letho go. It wasn't anything personal, he wanted to keep the witchers alive in the South. I can respect that.

You should REALLY play Iorveth's path. It's really not segued into all that well at the end of Act 1, but Iorveth's Act II is brilliant. I enjoyed it much more that Roche's tbh.

Saskia was the dragon!? Fuck me. I killed the dragon because I didn't want it to suffer and slowly bleed to death out in the forest. Afterwards, when Geralt met up with Triss he made it sound like the dragon would have survived but remained under the control of the sorceresses. Now I am even more conflicted about that choice. On one hand, I am guessing she is one of the few truly noble characters in the game. On the other hand, if a dragon stayed in the control of the sorceresses the death toll would have continued to rise.

I had to choose between helping Roch find the princess and saving Triss. I went with Triss because I owed that to her and I assumed we could always go looking for the princess afterwards. I really hate Dethmold.

Originally I chose Roches path because I do not like the Scoi'atels methods, even though their cause is tragic. But I also couldn't turn my back on Flotsam. Iorveth did not care about the people in Flotsam he was supposed to be fighting for. I had to stay behind and kill Loredo that wannabe tyrant.

Yeah, you REALLY don't get the full story until you play both paths.

Saskia is the dragon. If you play Iorveth, and don't go to save T'riss in Act 3 (Letho still saves her), you learn how to break the spell. plus, the sorceresses aren't in any condition to do much of anything afterwards, what with the pogroms and all.

in Act 3, each path gets 2 main quest options-personal (save T'riss) and political (rescue princess/rescue Francesca). personally, i think the political quests are better from story perspective, b/c T'riss is saved anyhow, but ymmv, depending on how you roleplay it.

Iorveth in Act 1 is really interesting, actually. If you initially let him get captured during the ambush (before the Letho fight), and then rescue him, you get a choice to chase after Loredo, or rescue some Elven prisoners he set on fire. If you let him go during the ambush, then Loredo spearheads a mass non-human pogrom in Flotsam, and you get to lead a mission of vengeance against him (and kill him).

I've let him go to rescue the prisoners, and my only bad epilogue bit was the fact that he sold out Flotsam to Kaedwen. Next time, I'll probably kill him.

all of the above is what makes the game so damn good. There are so many choices, it's amazing.

Oh, the first time I played the game I put a lot of thought into that decision.

But let's say it that way. Whatever you choose, it will not rob you of any possible paths later in the game.

The trolls are great. But his quest is interlinked with Melitele's heart and the dice poker quest line. And dice poker sucks in this game. You will have to reload several times if you don't want to loose all your money.

I think I got about halfway through the game and encountered an irrecoverable bug. The only way to solve it was to restart the entire chapter again (not so bad as I was only about an hour into it, but still), so I went off and played some, frankly, much better games. Witcher 2 is all right, and a vast improvement over the first game, but it does feel like an awful lot of context and characterisation has been left on the cutting room floor. There's really not many likeable characters in the game.

Need to get back to this though. I don't like leaving games, even somewhat mediocre ones, unfinished and I want to play Witcher 3 (by all accounts, a far superior game).

I totally agree that W2 had some technical problems and unlucky gameplay mechanics, all things W3 did better, and also sadly they cut some contend, like whole chapter 4, but there were actually a lot of characters I liked and hoped to see again. Sadly several of them didn't return in the next game and only in some cases hints were given what happend to them.

Worst fight in the game is in Chapter 2, you don't get any of your abilities, armour, or upgrades, and you can't roll. And you're expected to fight three normal baddies and a super baddy in a tiny enclosed area. Deliberately vague here to avoid spoilers. One of the most frustrating fights in any video game I've played, even worse if you're playing with insta-death on insane mode. Way harder than any boss fight in the game IMO. Not too bad on the lower difficulties, so don't feel bad if you need to turn down the difficulty for this fight alone, unless you're going for achievements. So watch out for that. It's during the quest "The Eternal Battle"

Dice game is like 5-card stud poker.

You roll the dice once, get a combo of 5 numbers from 1 to 6. Your goal is to make a "hand". The " hands" are (from highest to lowest)

A straight- 1 to 5, or 2 to 6
A triple
2 pairs
One pair
High die (usually a 6).

After your initial roll, you can place a bet, and then you can "re-roll" as many dice as you choose, in order to (possibly) make your "hand" better.

Yes, enhancements are just placed into the slot (diff items have diff number of slots), and they can't be removed once used.

it's contextual- the game puts you into stealth mode in "stealth sections"

That area can be difficult. timing is everything.

Keep it for now. Smth better does come up during Act 1, but it takes a while.

And yes, TW3 has a jump button, and it's glorious.

I used to spend 15 min at a time just jump/roll climbing, seeing how high up I can get in the various mountains.
