They get you with the California Roll. The next thing know your jonesin' for the raw reproductive organs and the poop end of the digestive tract of a cephlapod that can only be found in the deepest depths of the Mariana Trench.

Do you live somewhere now where Sushi is entirely unavailable?

There's a sushi place an hour's drive away, but it's... not good. I need to find a reason to go down to Toronto/Ottawa sometime soon... they're no BC, but a lot better than what's up here.

Maybe I can buy frozen sashimi-grade fish and store it long-term for next time I get cravings? Or is that how I poison myself?

Ottawa and sushi are not close friends. There is good, but almost no great.
TO has more and much better.

Because living under one smells bad.

My experience has been about the same in both, and both good but not great (though I haven't tried the best places of either city). But all of them are leagues ahead of the one joint in Timmins, which tastes about as fresh as the leftovers in the Titanic's fridge.

Ah! Then the real question I have for you is this.

Have you had Poutine from Chez Nous?

Yes. Twice. Both times at or around 4am, which is the only time of day you should eat there. Both times I wasn't feeling particularly... coordinated... but most of it still ended up in my mouth. I did not see Shania Twain there.

Crazy that I remember this thread, but didn’t comment because I’d never tried sushi at the time.
Now I love it, just have to drive well over an hour to get it.
I've always been crazy but its kept me from going insane.

I'd love sushi.

Unfortunately I live nowhere near anything that serves anything worthy of the name. Supermarket packs don't count.

Maybe I should open my own place.
So that's the story. And what was the real lesson? Don't leave things in the fridge.

I love sushi too. I'm adventurous also, and am willing to try it all. Although I remember my first time I went a little over board with the wasabi. My experienced friend didn't catch me in time and whoooooweeeee did I get some sinus clearing action going on! (got some strange looks from the regular clientele too). Since then, I've learned the right calibration of wasabi&soy sauce that works perfectly for me. Posted Image

I'm a huge fan, tho lately as much as i enjoy really creative rolls, i've developed a preference for sashimi. Just give me a nice slice of quality raw fishy.

Oh that is wonderful and delicious. I like a good ceviche too. Love the fresh pop and clean punch the citrus adds and just the right heat level from chili peppers to wake the mouth up. Yummy!

I love sashimi: my favorites are uni with quail egg (held in by cucumber---perfect for luscious gooey gonads...), ika, unagi (without sauce), anago, hamachi, amaebi (with head), suzuki with foie gras, saba, hotate, and wild baby sake. In general I love raw fish---Italian crudo (moreso than carpaccio), Dutch raw herring, ceviche, Korean chili / soy sauce marinated raw crab---I'll even take a wild salmon filet out of the freezer and let it thaw just enough that my teeth can cut through the flesh (like biting into a salmon popsicle...).

Sushi rice is the one area where I sort of cheat on my no-refined-carbohydrates diet. But the vinegar does make the rice more slowly absorbed, and there isn't that much of it, so I don't count it. I prefer to get fish as sashimi (and don't use soy or wasabi with it), but I do like vegetable rolls with wasabi and soy: I like the kick of oshinko (double kick with ample wasabi), the lushness and crunchiness of avocado with peanuts (even though avocado really isn't a traditional Japanese sushi ingredient), seaweed, natto (with soy sauce it's delicious), and kampyo (hard to find, but so good! maybe my favorite of all the sushi vegetables in terms of flavor).

It's absolutely delicious. I had it twice as well, and I was only in Timmins for a weekend (with people who grew up there and demanded I try it). That said, the size of the "family" pack....who could eat all that and not be sick?

Right, but I guess I can't see a family ordering it to split, rather than some overzealous drunk person who was REALLY hungry? LOL

Timmins does have some people who look similar to that...
