Went to Oppikoppi this weekend, fan-friggin-tastic. Lots of really great SA bands, of which The Narrow was by far the best act.

currently at Lowlands. Saw Groove Armada live yesterday, very good. Today dutch rapper Typhoon with bigbanx New Cool Collective, SA rapper Jack Parow from a massive distance, and Blood Red Shoes, who more than delivered an awesome set. Finntroll wasn't viewed, sadly

. Tonight Lcd Soundsystem planned, maybe Richie Hawtin as Plastikman, and Dave Clarke.

LCD Soundsystem sucked. 2 plasma screens out of 5 radios.

At the least, that was my opinion. 7 man band, little connection with the audience, and the clock running on the podium and being checked by their front man after every song didn't help. We were the only ones to walk out, though - and others said they thought it was amazing. Well, I'll admit it did sound good when we left the tent, just not as good as you expect from a name like that and a 7 man live band with dj support.
Richie Hawtin was good (4 fat beats out of 5)

Rest of the evening was spent dancing to balkan beats... party party partizani!
Shantel was to perform last night, unfortunately too late as we had to drive back. Today, I saw (dutch bands aside):

Darkstar (very very low tempo and very unaccessible, but a live dj set, so kudos to them), 2.5 dark stars out of 5 black holes,
Gonjasufi (may have been good, but the sound in the tent was so sucky that we left), 2.5 queues out of 5 rastafari,
Pendulum (absolutely fucking brilliant, wow!) 5 kangaroos out of 5,
Die Antwoord (quite good, actually) 4 ninjas out of 5 vuvuzelas
Hot Chip (very good), 5 nerdy performers out of 5 plus one for the cute blonde who grinded her lovely tiny behind against me and led to this biased review,
Massive Attack (unaccessible, but shaped up well), 4 teardrops out of 5 angels,
Deadmau5 (swept the crowd up and created massive havoc, awesome), 5 helmeted mice out of 5.

Heh, it's funny that Parrow and Die Aantwoord are the two bands that are getting so much overseas exposure. They are both incredibly tongue in cheek pokes at afrikaaner culture and are pretty polarising of local audience. I don't know how well a lot of what they do would translate to an overseas audience; understanding the concept of 'Zef' helps a lot to understand what the guys are trying to do. Jack Parrow especially makes a fair number of references to afrikaaner culture. Personally I think there are better SA artists at the moment, but given how many of them sing in afrikaans they would probably battle even more appeal to an international audience. A band like fokkofpolisiekar has some of the most poetic lyrics I have ever heard.

As an aside, the frontman for Die Aantwoord is Waddy Tudor Jones, who has done a lot of work under a variety of monikers. Max Normal is probably the most famous and in my opinion a bit better than Die Aantwoord.

Was at Ozzfest last night.

Motley Crue actually rocked really hard. Ozzy was awesome, and I was amazed at the energy he had on stage.
DevilDriver was good, Hetfield rocked pretty hard.

Good time.

Dj Isis at Lief festival. Damn, great set, superbly sexy lady. Maximum enjoyment, and the evening is not even started!

EDIT, now that I'm home: also saw Nobody Beats the Drum (mwaaah) and Sander Kleinenberg (wtf did he smoke, that was a terrible, terrible set, and he's a great dj) live, and ended the evening with BoemKlatsch, who are a personal favorite and thus, can do shit all wrong.

However, Isis (aka 100% Isis, still a world top 10 techno dj) was the highlight of my party. Starting in an empty tent close to the festival's entrance, she managed to fill it up to 90% at the least by sheer quality alone, despite a power outage near the end of her set, which did not disturb her in the slightest. Kudos for that, and she deserved both a better place and a better audience.
I think she's still touring... go and see her if she's near you!

Parow and Die Antwoord are signed to the dutch Top notch label for their dutch/european releases, so they have a publicity machine/formal support here, resulting in Parow presenting a Top Notch label presentation cd, even. Fokofpolisiekar and Tudor Jones' other alts simply do not have that kind of support, and thus, are unknown to the dutch/ european public at large.

Must say though... I disliked Parow the first six times I heard 'cooler als ekke', attributing his success to it being almost 75% understandable to a dutchman, but now it is somewhere on my mobile as a ringtone (for an obscure friend, but hey, thought that counts... :))

I understand that they are well supported, and Holland is a good place to try break into the Euro market for an afrikaans band due to the language similarity. I guess it depends what the market in Europe is looking for at the moment. Parow is managed by the guys from Fokofpolisiekar, so if they could get him signed overseas, they could probably get themselves signed too. Personally I think they are a better band, but if electro-rap is what's in at the moment, then an afrikaans punk band isn't going to do that well. Pity, but that's just the way it is.

KT Tunstall was effing amazing. That girl left her blood all over her guitar and the stage. She puts on one hell of a show!

Much enjoyed!

I recently went to see Al " actual " Green in concert. The bloke is an actual ledge. He hung up his hat to be a reverend and the music interfered with his work n such but he recently came back. I'm telling you the man stood on the stage. Raised his eyebrow a bit then made some weird noise that sounded like angels collecting tears on cotton wool infused crystal and the place erupted.

Supporting him was Michael Mcdonald. Now going on the previous paragraph let me tell you that he was actually better then Al Green. Yes I know, I have just stated actual blasphemy but it was true. that dude is an actual pimp.
"I think i was a bad person before. Before this time. I do not try to be good now but i am not bad. Perhaps if i try harder i may get a better hand dealt next time? But surely that makes it pointless? Perhaps i am good. Just good at being pointless. But that would make me bad. Bad at having a point. Ah…. I see now. I was nothing before, I am nothing now. I am bad purely because im pointless. "

You canceled your tickets because those who you were going with opted out? Madness! Although it is a bit sad going to a concert by yourself, I'd rather do that than miss it entirely.

By the by, it's surprising how often Karnivool are over in the UK. You lucky bastard.
