We never did come to an agreement on how to pronounce " Ay'edenan tek' velut !enan "...

Duiker = Doo-ee-ker," but somewhat slurred, rather than sounded out clearly.

Malazan = Mal (like Reynolds) - ah - zahn

Paran = Pear - ehn

Tavore = Tay - vohr (short "o")

Ruin = Roo - een (rather than roo - in)

Tehol = Tay - whole

Brys = Br - eye - zh (a soft "s" works for the last syllable as well, like the American "Bryce")

I can't think of many more than aren't simply phonetically obvious, in whatever accent of English you speak.

Except, for perhaps Malazan.

I pronounce Brys like I do my name, Bri as in "eyes". Brys.

Duiker is pronounced Dooker. Brys is pronounced Breeze. Raest is pronounced Ra-est (as in Ra the sun god and west).
Can't think of any others that surprised me.

Ay'edenan tek' velut !enan - how it appears but don't forget the glottal stops!

I think if i remember rightly that Tiste was apparently pronounced in a bizarre way. Kruppe i think was another one that surprised me.

for the record i think
Tiste should be tisst (sounds a bit liek hissed)
Kruppe i pronounce Krupp-uh
Malazan is Mal-ah-zan (this one seems really obvious to me)
Baudin im actually not sure about it keeps changing in my mind but i think its Bow (as in bowing not bow and arrow)-din

from the ones Hetan mentioned i think i dont actually pronounced any of them right

Duiker is Duke-er
Raest is Ray-st (similar to haste)
Brys is Briss

Malazan = Mahl - az - ahn

Paran = Pah - rahn

Tavore = Tah - vor (hard r) - eh

Ruin = like the english word, ruin.

Tehol = Tee - ohl

Brys = Bryhs

Urko = Uhr - koh

Quon Tali = Kwon Tah - lee

Seven Cit... ah, wait, scratch that.

Korel = Koh - rehl

Jacuruku = Yah - tzu - ruh - koo

Aren = Ah - rehn

and so on. it might be my cultural and linguistic heritage of spelling, can't help myself most of the times. I'd probably differ a lot from you guys and your thick, moist language patterns.

I'm so used to reading Greek mythology where Aphrodite is AFRO (hah) - dye - tee that I almost always put some emphasis on the last 'e' with long names.

It's strange, but I've recently altered my pronunciation of 'Andii' and it's all because of the word 'Andiian'

While reading DoD I came across 'Andiian' and I first pronounced it as: An - dee - eye - an.

but that sounded wonky and not like a people's race should sound. It didn't have the same ring as Liosan, Letherii, or Tali.

SO I changed it in my head to: An - dye - ee - an, and it all-of-a-sudden sounded better to my sensibilities. Now I started saying Andii as An-dye-ee and it just sounds better.

it's ma-LA-zan, like...I dunno, just accented on the 'la', nothing weird :band:

edit: I suppose the similarity to 'Malaysian' is the accent on the middle syllable, but there's no 'ay' sound

Edur - ed-ur, though Hetan has got me saying ee-dur and I now prefer it that way
