This is an old topic that got shuffled around different sections and I think was eventually lost in the last forum move. This thread will serve as a discussion spot for how to pronounce names and words from all the Malazan books. Hopefully this will keep new "How do you pronounce Ganoes" threads.

At the Chicago meet there was a definite difference in how we pronounced the words. All I remember is that my pronunciations tended to match Morgy's pronunciations, and differed quite a bit from Bent's.

It's always odd discussing fantasy out loud. All the made up names and whatnot all sound silly coming out of other people's mouths, and sometimes they sound silly coming put of your own mouth.

I still say "Gan" as in "ran" and "ohs" as in Os. Ganoes.

Screw it, let's call him Paran.

I would like to point out, however, that Steve CONFIRMED, that my pronunciation of MALAZAN (muh-lay-zshun...much like malasia, was accurate.)

Yes, yes. And I will continue to pronounce it wrong 'til I'm dead because it's just wedged in my brain.

Didn't the Saffers have alternate pronunciations like Doo-ker, Day-ker, Die-ker (as in dye not dee) and Dee-ker or somesuch?

Don't forget Dwee-ker.

I seem to remember some Dutch geezer posting in the other thread that it was pronounced Duke-ur, If I remember correctly, Duiker was the guy's actual surname !

Anyway each to their own I guess.

Damn you Bent, I suppose you pronounce Parmesan as Parma zhaaan as well ?

I've got an image of little Malaysian Marines running around in my head now,
Bloody language mangler.... :D
Now all the friends that you knew in school they used to be so cool, now they just bore you.

I pronounce Malazan Mal-uh-zan. It just sounds better, in my opinion. And no, I don't care if it's wrong.

As for Duiker, I pronounce it Dew(as in Jew)-iker.

Ganoes = Gan-owes

The problem with the Duiker thing is that it is a word in the Dutch language meaning "Diver". Moreover, the way it is pronounced in Dutch, can be hard to explain, cause the English language misses our UI pronounciation.

It's Day-ker. Like the buck and probably similar to the dutch pronounciation. My girlfriend and one of my friends have also read the series and that's one of the only non-english word all three of us pronounce the same way.

WARNING--this thread is dangerous to your (my) reading enjoyment. I can't stop pronouncing "Malazan" twice (both ways mentioned above) now everytime I read it.
