Yeah, Risen was refused classification / rating in Australia so it became illegal to sell within the country... o.O but it says I'm okay to purchase it from outside the country for my own personal use, aslong as it doesn't contain any blatent illegal content like child porn... So uh yeah!!

I've never come across that before, must be a brutal game?

Not really all that brutal, no. Apparently it was "sexual activity and drug use related to incentives or rewards." but, TBH, I don't really recall either in the game.
I wouldn't be surprised if it's just cockblocking a small retailer.

Oh yeah, I read mentioned something about reefer weed or something, and how when you die from mobs, they will stick around gorging on your corpse. even though in Gothic 1 there is blatant reference to weed, and all the sect loonies are constantly smoking it. there's also those big pipe bongs all over the place, but they are renamed water pipes lol!

Yeah, the Australian classification system is one of the stupidest things I've ever seen. It's illegal to sell, yet it's legal to own? If it's legal to own it, then why the hell is it illegal for retailers to actually give it to people? It makes no sense, and your example is just another reason why it's so stupid. Although I read somewhere customs are justified in seizing it if you do import it.

Oh, and apparently they've banned the new Mortal Kombat game as well.

Personally I thought it was more ridiculous that the rating system refuses to add a higher classification than M15+, when CLEARLY they could avoid a lot of rigmarole simply by adding an R18, and more to the point, IT IS THE PARENT'S BLOODY FAULT IF THEY DO NOT KNOW WHAT THEIR KIDS ARE BUYING AND PLAYING DAMMIT. DO NOT PUNISH THE GENUINE CONSUMER BECAUSE A FEW PEOPLE ARE IDIOTS AND YOU THINK (BASELESSLY) THAT GAMES WILL MAKE CHILDREN INTO PSYCHOPATHS.

Mind-blowingly stupid is right. Why do we have an R18+ rating for movies and TV, but not for games? It makes no sense, as the levels of violence you see is likely the same across all mediums. If you ban games for that reason you must logically ban movies for that reason, yet we don't, to my knowledge. It's infuriating that after years and years of people saying the same thing nothing has changed.

There's some babble about it being different because the player controls the action - it's their choice, blah blah blah. And obviously, if kids are getting their hands on games they shouldn't, an actual rating isn't going to make the difference.

I think the problem is seriously about Moral Guardians who have no real point of reference other than their own baseless fears. If someone got into power who actually had half a clue, it wouldn't be a problem any more. Then again, ratings' boards and such are almost exclusively the domain of bigoted, opinionated idiots moral guardians without a clue. *sigh*

I've now been playing Gothic 2: Gold Edition, which is quiet awesome! feels a lot more fleshed out than the first one. They make many reference to getting stoned, drunk, weed and whores, there is even a cut scene when you 'Have some Fun' at the local brothel. as far as I can tell there is not much difference in mature content between Gothic 2 and Risen, yet Gothic 2 still was released in Australia with no Dramas.



I'm leaning more toward the idea that the big companies that took over the Gothic franchise are just being douche bags to the original piranha bite fellas.

Could someone who has played it tell me if Risen is worth getting? I had it pre-ordered once upon a time until it was postponed, but I never did pursue it once it was released.

Just wrote a major final, on the subject that completely raped me on the midterm back in december. And the next one's not till Monday.

As such, I went splurging, ordering my GOG wishlist:

Arcanum
Beyond Good and Evil
Divine Divinity
Planescape: Torment
Settlers II Gold.
feeling nostaligc, I also wandered on Steam to grab the original XCOM for 5 bucks...and there I found BOTH Max Payne games on sale. for somehting like 4 dollars.

EA is having an RPG sale, 33% off.

given as this is the last weeknd of my glorious no-cap broadband, i bougth Mass Effect and Dragon Age Ultimate (Awakening + every DLC)
might also get the GTA Classics collection off Steam for the same reason. I was hoping for a sale, but what can you do?

EDIT: aaaand GOG is starting a sale too.
got Prince of Persia Sands of time. this weekend will devastate my wallet and my external hard drive's available space.

Late, but yeah, Risen was banned solely because you can smoke weed. Damn good game, Eddie, definitely pick it up now that you can get it cheap. Never quite reaches the heights of Gothic 2: NotR, but what does? It's a great slightly-more-polished introduction to the Gothic series (and yes, it's a Gothic game, ignore JoWood; even the game's plot is a transparent follow-on from Gothic 3's) and a great experience in its own right.

Anyway, took the plunge and bought Knights of the Chalice today. £15 for an indie game seemed a little steep, but from the demo, I can already tell that it'll be worth every penny. Trying to hold off on playing it until after exams...

Most definitely should get Risen, After just finishing Gothic 1 and 2 in the last few weeks ignoring Gothic 3 and playing Risen instead, it is a great game! A real deep and fun RPG experience, the English voice acting is superb and hilarity ensues. I'm only on chapter 2, but I can tell from this point that Risen is a win game. you would be missing out if you didn't play it.. :D its also really pretty, for a 2009 game it beats Dragon age graphics, Imo.

also, there is a trailer for Risen 2 getting around. woo!
