Finished Risen, thoroughly enjoyed it. booted up Arcania Gothic 4, seems a bit depth less and lackluster in game play mechanics.But its verrrrrrrrry pretty to look at. (except for some of the characters)
But the further I get into the game, the more hope I have for it. its fairly entertaining thus far.

Urgh, Arcania
I'm vaguely annoyed they don't have Arx Fatalis in the JoWood catalogue. It's a great game, if a flawed gem, and as close to Ultima Underworld 3 as we'll ever see. It's definitely worth the normal price, though, so I'd recommend picking it up while you're there. I did.

Arcania is about as complex as a playboy bunny, and about as pretty, too - as long as your expectations are low (ie, you don't expect it to be a Gothic game) it's fairly enjoyable.

I only managed a couple of hours of it even with no expectations, having read this review, and ended up agreeing with it entirely. I don't think I'd be exaggerating to call it just about the worst RPG I've ever played, especially playing it within a year or two of playing Risen and Gothic 2 for the first time.
That said, given that Risen even transparently follows the story of the Gothic series (Risen begins with gods having left the world... remind me what Gothic 3's true ending ended with?), I have no problem ignoring Arcania and treating Risen as the real Gothic 4, so for once I can't bring myself to be particularly angry about the ruin of a series I love. Can't wait for Risen 2.
Also, this week's purchase: Il-2 Sturmovik 5-in-one pack for £4 off GOG. I need to stop buying these cheap deals and actually find time to play them.

Just finished Arcania, by the end I was wishing there was a fast forward button. It was aesthetically pleasing sometimes. but the game play and story where seriously lackluster. Not to mention it was incredibly easy. usually I'll run through most games on normal the first time. and if i play again I'll boost it up to hard. I had to boost up to hard straight away and it still felt like it was on easy mode. I remember in the old Gothic games, if you ventured 1 step too far into the forest. BAM your dead.In Arcania I could take down trolls and shadow beasts without even getting scathed. Ohwell, we can't always get what we want
Picked up Mass Effect 1 and 2 off steam -75% sale. Been looking for an excuse to get into this series, finally found it. and finished Portal2 a couple days ago, now just running through again looking for secrets and achievements, man I love Portal games. so brilliant.

Received Dead Space as gift. Also bought 'Universe Sandbox', looking forward to amusing myself with playing God on a cosmic level.

Well, so far (I've only played around with it for half an hour or so) it's pretty fun, though it's not perfect. I tried but couldn't simulate a black hole (maybe it's my failing here), and there's no option to make a star go nova, as well as the engine doesn't seem to take dark matter into account (you'll see galaxies losing stars rapidly often). In any case, there are tonnes of options and you can change any object's mass, radius, density, even the gravitational constant; you can set time intervals from real time to infinity (like watching the local galaxy cluster in anything slower than, say, 1sec = 1.0 M years is like watching a tree grow). I think it's pretty decent in any case. Trying to put together a stable solar system with planets and moons isn't as easy as it sounds!
Also, when I chose to run the galactic collission premade simulation, either something bugged out or my machine couldn't handle so many objects at once (it treats each star in a galaxy separately).
I think I'll give it some more time now, as I've had enough Dead Space for one evening. God that game is creepy, especially with how drastically awkward/slow the controls are and how confusing the over-the-shoulder camera is (yes, I'm aware that these were put in place for that specific reason).

You should be able to create a black hole. I heard in a Giant Bomb podcast that increasing the weight of a planet to the weight of the sun will make it collapse. Of course that doesn't tell how you make the sun do a black hole. Maybe your sun just wasn't big or old enough? It's composition was wrong?

There is an option for density labeled 'Black Hole', though it only affects the size of the star and doesn't make it create an event horizon. I also tried doing it by manually setting the values that would be proper for a Black Hole, but no apparent status change was present. Or I just couldn't recognize any. Also, you can't really set the 'age' of a star from what I've seen. You can however try to simulate that with size, density and surface temperature, I guess.
In any case, I'd love it if you could make stars go nova in the simulations. I'd love to attempt creating a stable orbit for a planet in a dual system, especially in a blue giant / black hole type of system. I don't even know if that's possible, heh.
