Maxi Jazz looks the part, but how is his acting?
Mickey Rourke is a bit too badass to play Coll I think, I think he would possibly be able to pull off Karsa with a bit of special effects magic.

a bit of? That's gonna have to be a shitload of special effects magic. Not only is Karsa huge, he is also pretty young and I don't think he is butt-ugly either...

These discussion always make me chuckle as you'd never get even one of the actors mentioned never mind all of them. They used to do these on Dragonmount (AFAIC, still do) and some of the stuff they came up with was ludicrous. It sticks in my mind that they had real trouble coming up with a 6ft 7 ginger to play Rand.
We all know that if they ever made a film of it then it would be a whole load of people you have never heard of, plus one or two who you kind of recognise plus a single old guy who used to be a big draw.

Of course, but there really is only so much of 'Karsa v. Mandingo' or 'Whoz sword is teh bestest using for cut slash', which are really just the same damn thing, before you just pack in the mind-machine and start circling for a soup pot duel.
Its more about how people conceive of the characters, bizarre and wrong as their conceptions may be.

The only 6ft 7inch ginger that i can think of is the guy from Queens of the Stone Age, Josh Homme (he might be even taller in fact). Maybe he'd do for that character? I'm joking of course.
I enjoy these discussions, and despite knowing it's complete pie in the sky, I still try and limit my choices to actors that could conceivably be cast in a tv adaptation. So, that means mostly casting actors from other tv shows, rather than famous movie stars.
It is amusing though, just how variable our impressions of the same characters are though, in particular their ethnicity. Would love to know more about who Patch and co had in mind for their script.

sure i've mentioned this before, but what about a time-machine led dream team, ie any actor, at any age they have been,
or even dead ones
case in point, but Vigo the Carpathian has ALWAYS been Kallor since i first read about him:

now, seen as the guy playing him died 5 years back, you see the need for a time machine.....
or even dead ones

I don't want the books to be made into a movie. I like how it all looks in my head and a movie will ruin it. I can't read LotR now without everyone looking like they are in the films now. I also never really care to think what people look like precisely. Characters just have a vibe that you get when you read about them for awhile. That's all you need.

Kalam = Ving Rhames.
QB = Chiwetel Ejiofor (as someone said earlier.)
You can thank me later.
I also repped Grimhilde, because I completely agree with his(her?) choices.
If we are doing a younger Cotillion (due to deadhouse and being a god, I assume),
Then Nathan Fallon would be a good Shadowthrone, in my opinion.

Is Chiwetel Ejiofor the guy from 2012?
And this guy as Kalam??

Chiwetel Ejiofor was the assassin guy in Serenity, among other roles.

And yes, he was the 'main geologist guy' role in 2012. The one the presidents daughter gets with.
And yes, althought Ving isn't that big anymore, he is a bit older and still has the muscle to look like Kalam.

Good call though Grim, good selection - Fid is spot on.

I do not want to see Nathan Fillion in anything Malazan. I feel like he just doesn't fit.

The problem is that too many of you are trying to shoe-horn completely wrong A-list actors into these roles.
I mean, to the point of even ignoring skin color (Dal Honese are very dark black, for example).
Most of these actors just don't look very hard-bitten. They have no rawness to them - fair, soft-skinned city dwellers with over-modulated voices. Absolutely no known actor could play Fiddler, for example. And the voices rarely seem right - Clint Eastwood sure doesn't have Kallor's voice.
But if we're going to go down the "actors who are popular enough we've mostly all heard of them," I can only come up with a few suggestions:
1.) Hugh Jackman as some Malazan marine. One of the innumerable sergeants mentioned in TBH, would work.
2.) Brad Pitt as Tehol Beddict. A bit too old, but with some voice training (he's too nasally mid-American) it could work. I had originally thought of him as Paran, but he's definitely too old for that.
3.) Someone mentioned Bruce Willis as Kindly. That's ... bizarrely do-able, though his voice isn't quite deep enough.
4.) Mos Def as Quick Ben would only work if he lost the British accent and lost a lot of weight - QB is supposed to be scrawny, and his face needs to be a bit gaunter.
5.) The Arab guy from The Mummy would be a good Corabb.
Oh, and Summer Glau cannot possibly be Apsalar - Apsalar is supposed to be Eurasian looking, and have a large rack. Glau is a long ways from both. Though I can see Gina Torres in the role of one of the numerous Dal Honese Marines. Summer might make a good Kiska, though. And as long as we're talking Firefly, the actor that plays Jayne would make a good heavy.
