With the weight of thousands of years of friendship and experience resting on his shoulders the epitaph Brood chooses to encapsulate Rake's life, Broods feelings, and the feelings of an entire people is one word, Grief. That broke my heart.

Brood has lived millenniums, he knows long after the legend of rake has passed, the symbol will remain.

Not finished with DoD yet but so far probably the clash between Toc/Olar Ethil and Tool, shooting Tool, severing the friendship. The hobbling of Hetan was probably both one of the saddest as well as THE most infuriating scene in all the books.

Another very, very strong would be Coltaine's death and taking of his soul by the crows. That scene was.... sad, epic, infuriating, powerful... probably one if not the strongest scenes in the books.

A sad moment for me was the first description of the now Fallen God. QB went to visit. Here was the once-powerful God hunched over a fire, hacking and coughing in obvious pain, chained and in a flimsy tent. I thought at the time of Captain Kirk's famous line. To paraphase: Beam me up Scotty this place sucks!

For me the saddest moments are as follows,

1) Duiker being crucified. Not sure why this upset me, but it did. I know it turns out he didn't die but truely I think actually he did.

2) Toc's death - so unexpected and unwarranted. Again moved to tears

3) Brys - same as Toc

4) Beak

5) Coltaine

6) Bottle

etc etc

So many tears - never known a writer consistently effect me like Steven does.

Only scene that made me cry and i won't read again is Beak going through hood's gate and seeing his brother.

Having all nearly the dead characters reincarnated as a bunch of bad-asses really took away the 'sadness' factor, namely - Coltaine/Duiker, Itkovian, ALL the Bridgeburners, Burhulkian (or whatever his name is) & the Grey Swords, but there were still a few that made me sad.

Murillo's death hit me hard, the conversation between Crokus & Kruppe: 'I thought - I thought he'd given all that up.' 'Given what up, my friend? The desire to do right?' really touched me. Caring and compassionate, till the very end.

Then there's Seerdomin, sacrificing his fucking soul, to save Itkovian and to buy him enough time so he'd finally embrace Salind.

Kedeviss' death was also pretty emotional, with that bit about the souls of the Andii waiting for Mother Dark, for her to finally accept them again...(she didn't have to wait as long as the other Andii, but still...)

Trull was another one, I thought he was one of the lucky characters who was going to get a happily ever after, but oh was I wrong! Stabbed by some Lethrii bastard, made me both sad and angry.
:p:rant::)
Rake - just had to say it, a sacrifice beyond all mortal measure, what a way to go. I REALLY liked his death, the finality of it, what with Brood sealing the barrow and all those Daru/Gadrobi watching him, so I hope he doesn't come back.
It'd ruin it. :p
Lives and loves, the gamut of existence was marked by such things. A breaking of paths, the ragged, uneven ever-forward stumble. Blood dried, eventually. Turned to dust. The corpses of kings were laid down and sealed in darkness and set away, to be forgotten. Graves were dug for fallen soldiers, vast pits like mouths in the earth, opened in hunger, and all the bodies were tumbled down, each exhaling a last gasp of lime dust. Survivors grieved, for a time, and looked upon empty rooms and empty beds, the scattering of possessions no-one possessed any longer, and wondered what was to come, what would be written anew on the wiped-clean slate. Wondering, how can I go on?

Too numerous to pinpoint just one, but why not?! I would say the saddest moment for me had to be the Fall, and Squint taking that fatal shot, and the grief that encompasses his life after that. Add in the touching conversation between Squint and Apasalar as a solid follow-up for truly sad moments.

There are lots of sad moments in the series for me but the ones that really get to me are probably not ones that you'd expect people to get upset over.

First, one that really upset me was Dassem's fall at Y'Ghitan and Temper's stand against the annointed Surgen Ress to defend him. I remember reading how Dassem rode out on to the field blazing glory and how inspired his men were, only to see their beloved commander shot in the back and fall out of nowhere. It made me sad just seeing this from a soldier's POV and how I would feel in that situation.

Some other really sad moments involve Mappo trying to find Icarium. Especially at the end of DoD how he says he was so close only to lose him again. Their friendship is so strong and so tragic it makes my eyes water

The last and probably saddest set of scenes in the whole series for me was when the Edur took over the Letherii palace. First off, it was tragic how Brys was poisoned after defeating Rhulad so handily. The worst part for me, however, was the fall of Quru Quan. He was one of my favorite characters in the whole series (very enigmatic like Iskaral Pust or Quick Ben). He spent days meditating and gathering strength to save his falling kingdom from the Edur (who I hated) and to see the shock and awe on Hannan Mosag's face when the Ceda unleashed on him was pretty epic. It looked like he was going to just whoop ass and save the day and then he gets freaking owned by a spear. So sad :D

When poor Korbolo had been the only one to salvage the 7C campaign from the traitorous Wickans, and then he takes on the weighty burden of being the Sword of the Empire, goes head-to-head with a whole phalanx of Gold Moranth, then the very next day is up on his feet encouraging the troops to give it their all and heads straight into the fray taking on Avowed amidst the chaotic hordes of skirmishers from both sides... and then Mallick throws him in jail for trying to bring reinforcements into the battle!!! So tragic... Posted Image

I don't post much, but I feel my name was well chosen. As I agree with all the scenes stated above I'll only say ones that may have been forgotten.

- When Harllo comes back after the ridiculously tragic events he endured, only to have his mom continue to reject him, she says, "nothing good came from that [rape]" and he says, "that's not true! there's me!" (sic). Maybe not sad, since there's hope but its so bittersweet because if Stonny hadn't been such a bitch it could have all been avoided. Either way, I cried.

- When Anomander Rake walks away from Endest Silann and he says goodbye, "'The day has begun.' Rake withdrew his hand and pulled on his guantlets. 'this walk, along this path...I will take pleasure in it, my friend. Knowing that you stand here to see me off.'" I knew right there that they would never see each other again, that Anomander Rake was going to die. The fact that he knew as well made it so much sadder. The juxtaposition of Rake's friendliness and Endest's burning grief for a living friend was so powerful.

- In my re-read of Gardens of the Moon, Lorn's death, because it seemed that right when she was at peace with herself, and admitted that she had feelings for Paran, she gets killed and forgotten in an alley.

- When Baruk's demons are looking for Duiker's corpse and they find a piece of paper in his pocket, with a name on it. A name he will never know.

That's all I can come up with off the top of my head. It needs to be said that I was in tears for the last 100 pages of DoD. Seriously, who didn't die?? How the hell is he going to continue the series if everyone is dead?
OFF TOPIC: What heroes do we have left? Ges and Stormy? Karsa? Gruntle...and uhh that's it. /sadface

Being optimistic's worthless if it means ignoring the suffering of the world. Worse than worthless. It's bloody evil. And being pessimistic, well, that's just
the first step on the path, and it's a path that might take you down Hood's road, or it takes you to a place where you can settle into doing what you can,
hold fast in your fight against the suffering. And that's an honest place, Cuttle.

Itkovian and Trull.

I might add that I recall feeling very sad over discussions between Traveller and who turned out to be Andarist in Book 4 (?) Andarist always struck me as a sad character. I always found Silchas Ruin to be a hateful character, so it was almost strange when he was so struck by Anomander's death. It made me think of how much heavier it would hit a wounded soul like Andarist even more, were he still around.

It seems like people are forgetting the part in House of Chains where Tavore stabs her sister without knowing...

That was easily one of the most emotional scenes in the whole series for me. I think you guys pretty much covered everything else though

Seren Pedac; having trouble pulling up the stones in front of the house left to her by the drunk guy that loved her as a father to bury Trull's sword AFTER she learns about his murder....
And then Bugg walks up to her out of the blue to offer his unique help as the Master of construction and excavation for the city of Letheras.

I'm fairly certain that was the only time real tears streamed down my face. It was the ultimate ending to the whole tragedy that was Trull and Seren and also one of those funny/wierd juxtapositions that seem to be Bugg/Mael's trademark.

Very moving.

-Brys was so unfair, but his return was great :)

-Beak and the story with his brother...:p

-The last white pages in dust of dreams (no Prologue of TCG...:p like the silent ticking of the clock in some 24 episodes with a sad ending )

I'm re-reading GoTM but am still suprised nobody has mentioned...

- WhiskeyJack vs. Kallor (MoI)
- Bellurdan Skullcrusher picking up the bodyparts of his lover NightChill (GoTM)
- Calot sacrificing himself to save Tattersail from Tayschrenn's betrayal at Pale (GoTM)
- Black Coral (MoI)
- Hetan's hobbling (DoD)
- The Last Stand of the Malazan Heavies (DoD)
- Khundryl Burned Tears (DoD)
- Anomander vs. Traveller
- Bottle (I wanted to die)

I loved the end of Dust of Dreams, and really hope that I don't have to add Adaephon Ben Delat to the list of saddest moments. DoD goes down in history as the gutwrencher of all time. Really excited to see who survives to fight with Gesler and Stormy and the army of K'Chain... I think a lot of people will be suprised to see who survived and escaped the Nahruk

It's hard because there's so many epicly tragic moments in this series. Beak's death and sacrifice takes the cake, though.

I've got to say, as much as scenes like Itkovian, Beak or Whiskeyjack struck me as I read them, it's more the sudden deaths of major characters that get me:

- Dujek 'off stage' to me was one of the worst as not only did we not witness it in the book, but for an aged experienced soldier to go like that without a last battle was criminally depressing

- Quick Ben (I refuse to believe he's dead until I read it). But a major, if not the major character for me in the books, an ever-present person gone in a flash. Literally. With all the secrets he has/had, as well as all the dealings with different gods, 12 warrens to choose from (even if some were muted being in the wastelands) and the Bridgeburners being ascendants, I hope that it's really not the end for him. The fact we have, so far, never seen the full potential of Quick Ben. I'm convinced he, and Erikson have been holding back on what he's capable of makes it even sadder for me.

- The high priests at Pale, especially the one who got torn up by the demon appearing behind him almost instantly (forgive me for not naming names, it's been a few years since I read it and my copy's on the other side of the world :))

- The Bridgeburners at Coral. Fast paced action and people dying left right & centre in every section. How I hate Erikson for killing off characters he's developed so well.

Other than deaths:

- Rhulad begging for him to be killed after Brys had beaten him and left him crippled like the god he was in leagues with. I finally thought he would be locked up and his people would turn their backs on him, but it wasn't to be

- Kalam. He's not dead, but (like Quick Ben) a massive character showing off his skills and decimating the claw and then the equivalent of being stabbed in the back. Except from across a rooftop.

- Icarium for being used by everyone and Mappo for endlessly trying to find him after they get seperated. If Rake gets the prize for the most selfless act in the book, Mappo gets a close second for being Icarium's minder

I'm sure there's lots more I'll remember once I re-read the series again

There are many scenes that made me tear up, but it's been awhile since I've read the first 6 books. In the last few spinnocks stand against kallor was touching and lostara also got to me. DoD was for the most part gutwrenching.

On a side note I'm refusing to believe quick and fidd are dead. It doesn't say it so i still must have hope.

For me, I have to agree with alot all you previous posters have mentioned, especially Beak, Rake, and Whiskeyjack. But on a strange note, I just reread GotM, and the one scene that stood out for me was when Quick Ben released the demon Pearl to give himself and Kalam time to escape from the tiste andii assassins, and as Rake is coming down:

"Ben Adaephon Delat," Pearl said plaintively, "see the las one who comes. You send me to my death"
"I know," Quick Ben whispered
"Flee then. I will hold them long enough to ensure your escape, no more."
Quick Ben sank down past the roof.
Before he passed from sight Pearl spoke again. "Ben Adaephon Delat, do you pity me?"
"Yes" he replied softly, then pivoted and dropped down into darkness.

Its strange because there is no prior emotional connection with the demon, yet for some reason this scene resonated with me.
