I love sunsets like that-what were you doing at the beach, perchance?

Save and invest ;-)

But to be honest, you can easily start with a point and shoot type camera, if you want to take pictures.

The camera I took that pic with is just a point and shoot digital. ONly 4 megapixils I think, several years old. No problems

Yup. To learn composition etc. you don't need a Cannon 1D Mark III or some such. Just go out and shoot. And see what you like and improve yourself. I've just started, so most of my shots are not very good. I hope to improve over time. And if I can do it, anybody can ;-)

I agree with those above. You can take great pictures with almost any modern point and shoot, especially if you are only going to be putting them up online.

Though I will admit that having the ability to manually alter things like exposure and aperture settings opens a whole world of additional creative options. There is however, no substitute for a good eye.

A friend of mine that used to live here in Dunedin is an excellent photographer, but he got bored of shooting images for club shows and competitions and basically had given up using his camera. And then he bought a new mobile phone with a reasonable camera in it, and got the bug to start taking pics again when he was out and about. Because he had such a good eye for "seeing an image", he was able to take really interesting photos with a very basic 2 megapixel camera with almost no controls. Far more interesting than i would have managed with my digital SLR and fancy lenses.

The key is to just practice, and try to look objectively at your images afterward (and honestly evaluate if your image worked or not, and whether you can identify what would have improved it). There are a few very basic "rules" of composition which will help you avoid the most obvious pitfalls in producing crap images.

Perhaps not as high quality as some of the other pics on this thread but I'm proud of this one because I managed to catch one rabbit jumping through the ears of the other rabbit :p It was lucky timing.

Took lots of pictures at Kew Gardens this year, these are a couple of my favourites.

The rabbit shot is very cool. At first I thought the jumping bunny had large feet.

@ stone monkey - i like the streetscape, but where is that second shot from? Really cool looking structure.

It was an installation at Manchester City Art Gallery by Zaha Hadid Associates Architects. It's a space specifically designed to have Bach String Quartets played in it. The acoustics are really something else; it's fairly spooky when theres no music on, incredibly still. It's not there now as the festival it was made for just finished at the end of August.
If an opinion contrary to your own makes you angry, that is a sign that you are subconsciously aware of having no good reason for thinking as you do. If some one maintains that two and two are five, or that Iceland is on the equator, you feel pity rather than anger, unless you know so little of arithmetic or geography that his opinion shakes your own contrary conviction. … So whenever you find yourself getting angry about a difference of opinion, be on your guard; you will probably find, on examination, that your belief is going beyond what the evidence warrants. I know I saw a thread somewhere about this, but I'm darned if I can find it... in fact I might think of adding a sub-forum somewhere for this as I know I've seen some awesome photo's that members have taken and posted. Anyway - this isn't awesome, but it's something I'm getting in to (photography that is) and I wanted to post this pic of the dogs, out having some fun..

lovely dogs.

Is that a trick of the light, or does one of them have different coloured eyes??

Anyway, enjoy the photography. If you've any photo related questions, feel free to ask

This photo isn't really awesome either but I've been meaning to post it for ages and this seems like as good a thread as any since it's more likely Hetan will see it here. Sombra spotted it when we were in Kew Gardens on his last day in London and it made us both giggle cos we're childish that way :) So this one's for you Hetan, enjoy...
