I am a newbie here as well, and will be undertaking the main series once I finish up Wheel of Time. I also have been collecting the main 10 in preparation for the read - I am a fan of the BCE's and appreciate that they are easier to find than the full size (plus they are cheaper).

Hello everyone!

I'm currently finishing off The Books of Babel (until the 4th book comes out) and once I've done that I'm jumping straight into Gardens of the Moon. I've heard so much about this series, how many say it's one of the best (if not the best) fantasy series ever, and how grand the scale of the whole thing is, I'm in for a ride here! Any advice when starting out in this series? I understand there is a lot to keep track of?

Mostly you should just accept that the book doesn't hold your hand and there's A LOT of characters, places, factions and plot threads - many of the questions you will raise, won't be answered fully before later books or not at all.

You're already used to the multiple narratives happening at different times with the Bancroft books, so this will be "more of that".

As far as using the forums, each book forum will have threads that discuss that book and possibly the entire book. So if you want to stay spoiler free, start your own thread and ask questions. People will pop in to answer and say hello.

Thanks alot guys. I've definitely heard you have to get over the fact that you won't be told exactly what is happening, so I'm up for that. Bancroft tends to be very descriptive and definitely "holds your hand" so this will be something new. I understand it was initially written for film so that would make sense why it would be that way.

Also, what is the order of the malazan series? I've seen the chronological order and other varients of the order of the books. Thanks!

The best way is to go in publication order - Gardens of the Moon, hop to a mostly parallel storyline in Deadhouse Gates, go back to the first storyline in Memories of Ice, then House of Chains.

You can read Night of Knives at any point after the first book (I recommend reading it after Midnight Tides, but it's not crucial) and then come back here to ask for advice on reading order.

Hi all. I'm 23 and started Malazan in August to break up the tedium of the pandemic and quarantine. Currently on Reaper's Gale.

My ranking so far for the books is MoI = MT > DhG > TBH > GotM > HoC, but all are phenomenal books.

I'm most excited to read Toll the Hounds as I hear a lot of daunting/interesting opinions about it, and Erikson's called it his cipher for the series which is intriguing.

I love DHG MT and MoI beat it out slightly, although Chain of Dogs is probably the best story arc in Malazan so far. Just felt that MT was tighter, more focused and I enjoyed Erikson's exploration of some themes here. Every POV was interesting to me. Also, Tehol and Bugg.

Either way MT, MoI and DHG are 3 of my top 5 favorite fantasy novels. Each one is easily 9+/10 for me.
