I'm now something like 10 pages away from the ending of Midnight Tides and have grown quite fond of the three Beddict brothers. Especially Tehol, who is just brilliant. As before with Quick Ben and Kalam I had these flashes of movie stars to represent all three of them in my head. Sure they don't look exactly like brothers and their age difference in reality is probably way too much but here they are nonetheless, like I pictured them.

If you don't figure out who is who then I have clearly failed in my goal of portrayal. They should be quite obvious. Feel free to give input and comments and I'll respond later also shedding some light to my illustratory(is that a word?) decisions.

Oh, and extra points to anyone who can quess which actors these are.

I don't know about your choice of actors for the basis of the artwork, but they seem mostly in the ballpark for me of how I pictured them.

I do very much like, however, the way you have captured the expressions that seem to sum up their entire character in this single image. Now THAT'S Art, when the (admittedly dense in my case) viewer can glean something of the artists' intent. Of course, knowledge of the subject matter helps, but I dare you to present this to someone with no knowledge of the books and ask them to describe the character traits of the 3. The only problem I can see is someone may mistake Hulls' bitterness for a more nasty/criminal streak.

Cheers,

Oooh, I love they way you did Tehol and Brys, that's really close to how I picture them, so there's much love for both portraits :p
Hull's also very good, just less close to the discription and therefore my own image of him, but he's done very well. AND I recognized them without looking at the spoiler :p

Great job, first of all!

Tehol - To me, he seems much to "pretty boyish", I always imagined Tehol as very unkempt and goofy/jovial express fixed on his face. It might have been the picture that you referenced your drawing with of
Spoiler

Was Tehol described with short or long hair? I can't remember.

Brys - See, I'm not a huge fan of your reference actor :p When I imagined Brys I always thought of him as someone like David Wenham, in appearance and whatnot.

Hull - Friggin love Hull dude. That contemptuous, almost sad and disparate look on his face coupled with the scars makes him look exactly how I imagined.

Great job as always, just throwin my ideas out there for ya. Keep it up.

I love all your work that I've seen thusfar, Nether, but for me this is by far the best in terms of capturing the nature of the characters and your talent is remarkable. If I understand your approach, you prefer to work from a photograph and alter it to suit the character you're trying to portray, so...if I suggested a particular photo as a base for one of the Malazan characters. would you be amenable to giving it a try?

edit: that being said, Hull is a bit too haggard for me and Tehol a bit too ...serious? I like the choice of model/actor in both cases - I'd actually prefer the drawings to look more like the actors - think Paul Bettany naked by the roadside in that movie about jousting and remove the eyeliner from the Hull drawing - just an idea and firmly imo :p Brys, to my mind, is perfect - you say he's based on DiCaprio but I think it's different (and good) enough to escape that stigma - I have no problem accepting that as Brys Beddict :p

good overall choices on actors, nice work! Tehols appearance has always been a mystery to me.. a financial genius that lives the life of a fool..
Spoiler
could pull this off.. maybe Eric Idle or another Python.. but these choices look like related brothers better..

Eric Idle would be a perfect tehol, but out of three fantastic pictures, I like tehol the best, hull looks a bit more like fagan dirty criminal, but still great

Brys = Perfect.
Hull = I like it a lot. I was thinking less beat up but more exhausted, and almost sunken eyes because of his betrayals.
Tehol = Great, except I would expect a little smirk or the corner of his mouth just barely upturned.

I really do enjoy the sketch though, would it be all right if I made it my personal PC backround?

i picture this as the tehol that says to scholar janath "You should have left." the one who asks "Where is the value in any of it?"

I have 2 things to say

First-you have fantastic artistic skills

Second- this is almost how I pictured them, with just very minor differences (obviously since we are all unique)

First of all let me say again thank you for the very generous feedback. Second, I realize that my reference choices, some people like and some people don't. I quess that's just the beauty of books, so everyone can see it just how they want to.

Aptorian I know. I did say it was HERESY! :p
Sombra Glad that you think the character traits translate to the viewer. I chose my references partly because I liked the way their expressions portrayed the characters. I admit that Hull came out a bit too mean looking than he was supposed to be.
Puck You have earned yourself some meanlingless extra points for recognizing all the characters. :p Glad you like them. I somehow missed any precise descriptions of Hull in MT so I just imagined him to being a large unkempt warrior with long greasy hair and a beard since he's been banished and living in the wilderness for a long time.
Assail Thanks. Your first posted link didn't work so I'm left to wondering which picture you think would have suited better for Tehols reference. I think Tehol should be a sort of "pretty boy", since there are clues to hinting that he is surprisingly "easy on the eyes", as the say. His hair is never described more precisely, but I just figured since he lives a seemingly poor life he wouldn't go to the barbershop very often. At the most I'd imagine Bugg cutting his hair very simply, without going for any elaborate hairstyling. On the other hand he could also keep it very short and uneven, who knows.
Malaclypse Thank you for the compliment. I do think I shouldn't get too comfortable drawing from photos, so I won't get stuck on a rut. You're right about Tehol. He could probably use a little more smile on his face. Oh, and that's not eyeliner on Hull, just my feeble attempt at giving him darkened bags under his eyes, similar to someone who hasn't slept for a very long time, on account of him being tormented by his betrayal.
Old Magic I kept thinking, when reading MT, that if it ever was made into a movie or TV-series, Bugg and Tehol should both be played by british comedians. There's a Terry Pratchett kind of humour to their dialogue and manners. I quess I chose
Spoiler
because I'd just watched Inkheart.
Macros As I said above, a british comedian would souit the part of Tehol perfectly. Alas, I was thinking more in the ways of appearance then performance.
End of Disc One At least you recognized the individual brothers and that's what's most important.
Sindriss Thank you very much.
Imperial High Mage Tayschrenn Meesah thank yoo! (sayin it Jar Jar Binks style) :p God, now I need to wash my mouth with soap!
waydoug Thanks you very much.
Obdigore I think Hull needs to be a bit beat up since he's the oldest of the brothers and a warrior so his bound to have gotten some scrapes during his life. Tehol however could use a smirk. Feel free to use the picture as a background. If someone asks about it, just remember to mention my name that's all.
Sixty That's my goal. Thank you very much.
Sinisdar Toste Your quote eludes me. Is it from MT or some later book since I've only just finished reading MT?
Ganoes-Paran First - Thanky you very much. Second - I'm srprised they are that close to what you imagined.

While I still like Bettany as Tehol, I now think Alan Tudyk would be better - not that I'm suggesting you redo it Nether, but for the sake of pedantry...
