I can't believe some people thought they got marginally better. They truly got worse and worse, with the end of Episode III being like an F-minus-minus-minus.

I like Episode III

Anyways, Mrs. QT got MONEYBALL for Christmas and hadn't watched it (I saw it at the Film Fest in Sept), so she put it on, so I sat there and tried to read...and damned if that movie didn't suck me right back in and I ended up watching it with her. Still a really, really solid flick. How can you not romanticize baseball?

The Phantom Menace is easily the best of the prequel movies- apart from Jar-Jar and the annoying kid it's not too bad. It's just a crap Star Wars film, what with the midi-chlorians and trade blockades not fitting the setting.
Although it has the best lightsaber battle of the whole series.

If you made the exact same film but with all the SW-specific bits replaced with something else it'd have got a decent reception.
I can't carry it for you, but I can carry you.

Eh, Obi Wan v. Anakin is the best saber fight in the franchise. Easily. They trained so much for that and it showed.
Trouble arrives when the opponents to such a system institute its extreme opposite, where individualism becomes godlike and sacrosanct, and no greater service to any other ideal (including community) is possible. In such a system rapacious greed thrives behind the guise of freedom, and the worst aspects of human nature come to the fore....

^^this.

Also, the fight between Yoda and Dooku in ATOC was EPIC, and I'll have words with anyone that says otherwise. ;P

Dooku as a character did not need to exist.

Someday, when I am old, someone will remake all the Star Wars films and they will do a much, much better job of it. Then and only then will I return to the franchise.

Until then, that idiot Lucas gets none of my money or time.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO and also they just played a giant game of "the floor is made of lava!" which is of course a fun game but I don't need to see Hayden Christiansen hopping around playing it when I have my own furniture at home.
They came with white hands and left with red hands.

^^this is very correct, and one of my biggest gripes with the prequels.

Maul was a perfectly good villain and should have been in all 3.

I think Dooku was in there to throw viewers off the fact that the Chancellor was Sidious. Admittedly you'd have to assume the average audience's IQ was about 70 for that to work, but I think that was the goal.

But yeah, I wish we'd seen more Maul too.
OK, I think I got it, but just in case, can you say the whole thing over again? I wasn't really listening.

Maul couldn't lead a Seperatist movement such that the Republic had to build up sufficient forces for Palpatine to then use as his own personal army and fleet.

For the way he takes the story, Dooku makes sense. When they were still staying in the shadows and hiding their presence an assassin like Maul makes more sense.

Just watched Drive. Pretty awesome.

For a terrible B-movie Piranha 3D was surprisingly not that bad.
Hello, soldiers, look at your mage, now back to me, now back at your mage, now back to me. Sadly, he isn’t me, but if he stopped being an unascended mortal and switched to Sole Spice, he could smell like he’s me. Look down, back up, where are you? You’re in a warren with the High Mage your cadre mage could smell like. What’s in your hand, back at me. I have it, it’s an acorn with two gates to that realm you love. Look again, the acorn is now otataral. Anything is possible when your mage smells like Sole Spice and not a Bole brother. I’m on a quorl.

Yep, probably a bit late to the party but I've also just watched Drive and it was one of the best films I've seen all year.

Gosling's performance was so understated it bordered on becoming hypnotic at times and combined with a fantastic soundtrack I found myself getting totally immersed. The whole thing was beautifully shot and the moody lighting created a very distinct feel that reminded me of the 1980's, although the electro soundtrack, retro jacket and pink screen captions probably helped with this. The lift scene will probably become a classic and Ron Perlman getting out-badassed by Albert Brooks was great to watch. Whilst it was heavily stylised, at no point did I lose interest as each scene blended seamlessly into the next. Brutal one minute and beautiful the next, as you can tell I really liked this film.

DRIVE.

Holy shit, one of the best movies I've ever seen. Easily.

Just wow. So simple storywise, but told with such verve, tension, and acting skill. Shot amazingly well, and written very succinctly.

Loved every moment. Every beat.

I'm glad that Drive is getting so much slow-burn word-of-mouth attention because it deserves it. Truly excellent film. The director and both stars should go on to have truly massive careers (not that this was the first notice of that for any of them).

I haven't seen the PUSHER trilogy or BRONSON (both of which I hear are excellent), but I saw VALHALLA RISING at the film fest and LOATHED it...but after watching and falling totally for DRIVE I am tempted to go back and re-watch it simply because perhaps I had to be in a Nicholas Winding Refn state-of-mind to enjoy it?

There is a special feature on the Blu Ray where REfn simply sits in front of the camera talking about the genesis of the project and the actors...and it was fascinating to watch him talk. He is so clearly bizarre, but at the same time he is everything that Hollywood really isn't...and I have to admire that.

I really want to see Pusher before the remake comes out, but getting hold of it is proving not that easy. Hopefully said remake will lead to a reissue and renewed attention for the originals.

Bronson is good but very fragmented (which, in fairness, is a standard flaw of biopics). It disguises the issue better than most by being as insane as the person it's about (and Tom Hardy is brilliant).

I loved Valhalla Rising - I found it amazing how intense it was for a film with almost no dialogue, action or plot, and I thought Mikelsen was amazing - but yeah, it's definitely a mood piece that you have to be in the right thinkyspace for. I'm pretty certain that's the reason I didn't like Blade Runner.

I find it easier to get into that frame of mind at the cinema, for some reason. Well, for the reason that I don't have access to the fast forward and eject buttons with hundreds of other films within arms reach so I just go with the flow easier...

Winding Refn, together with Gosling, is now working on Only God Forgives, a Bangkok set revenge thriller, which is supposed to be the last part of a thematic trilogy that Drive and Valhalla Rising were part of, after which they'll do a remake of Logan's Run. Looking forward to both.
I can't carry it for you, but I can carry you.
