I decided a while back that I'd never pay money to watch Eragon (or should I say The Bumpkin Boy and the Flying Catasaur) seeing as the trailer looked like shit and the story seemed predictable and cliche.
Well, I just watched it tonight and I wasn't surprised, it was every bit as cliche and predictable as I'd expected. I could more or less guess every event from the get go. That said, with my expectations suitably low, it wasn't THAT bad, not down right boring anyway. Perhaps it would be more suited for teenagers than an adult with an idea of what good fantasy or film should be.
I don't know why Jeremy Irons keeps doing these films. He was once a pretty strong name and he can certainly act and do real characters. At least it wasn't Dungeons and dragons all over again.
don't know if I should even bother spoilering the ending, but
fuck that... the guy just borrowed elements from like 10 different fantasy novels... wackness....
1.Dragonriders who can talk telepathically with their "riders"
2. Dragons who bond emotionally and physically and mentally with riders-
3. farmer boy is the chosen one- not even going to try to list similarities.
4. Chosen one is the savior of a group of people
5. Chosen one has powers which he did not know of.
6. Chosen one is the only one who can defeat the evil one/bad guy.
7. It is the Chosen ones destiny to win over the forces of evil.
8. Farm boy meats up with an older father like man/teacher.
9. Farm boy falls in love with damsel at first sight. She does the same with farm boy
10. Farm boy grows into leader/savior
I was going to try and list all the books/movies that were ripped off but that would require too much effort. At a glance a major plot of Anne McCaffrey’s Dragon Riders of Pern was ripped off (the whole dragon/rider relationship and bond). I also see elements of Robert Jordon and Tolkien. Its like this kid just combined all his favorite fantasy novels into one even more cliché book.
