Went to see Rough Night last night.

Trailer really over sold this.
It was funny, some parts like bust out laughing funny, but it never reach found its tempo and a lot of the jokes fell flat or didn't seem to fit the movie.
Highlights - Demi Moore's character
Kate McKinnon, I may be bias as I'm a huge fan of here but she stole the show for me in practically every scene she was in. She just seems to get the mood and facial expressions right every time.

Damn, a horror movie legend has died. RIP Tobe Hooper. I don't man, I think 2017 is trying to punch 2016 in the dick.

I'm excited for this. But then I also have some apprehension because it's hard to capture lightning in a bottle twice, and so it could be a let down. I'll paying attention though as the release draws near.

Saw The Hitman's Bodyguard yesterday. A rather daft movie made very funny by the charisma and chemistry of the two main actors, Jackson and Reynolds. Gary Oldman playing a straight up, bond villain like dictator of Belarus was an excellent addition. Electra (Elodie Yung) made a surprising appearance as an interpol agent and Reynold's ex, and proved I think that my main issue with her acting in the Marvel shows are not her fault.

Heh, they changed the wardrobe design so the manji symbol on his back isn't so swastika-looking. Probably a good decision if they want to release this overseas.

I kinda love it when D'rek unleashes her nerd wrath, as I knew she would here. Sorry innocent bystanders, but someone's gotta be the kindling.

Watched UNDISCLOSED, which is a documentary about the work of Dr. Steven Greer...and basically presents a unique viewpoint on the whole alien topic. I liked it.

I'm watching Alien Covenant right now.

I had a lot of issues with those trailers they showed. Seemed like they were just repeating the first film, with the same hard sci-fi mistakes.

30 minutes in all my fears are confirmed. They just landed on an unknown, unmapped planet. No reconnaissance, no analysis of the biosphere, no precautions. Just a ship full of truck drivers landing in an alien environment, no protection, just sucking up all that foreign fauna their immune system has never encountered before.

I hope every last fucker dies.

EDIT: 50 minutes in I fucking hate this manuscript. I'm gonna try to finish the film because it's culturally significant, but fuck this film.

EDIT: Wait I spoke to soon. The film just got really interesting all of a sudden. Holy shit.

EDIT: Never mind the manuscript got bad again.

Beatriz At Dinner -- I heard mixed things about this movie, so went in ready to be disappointed, but I actually liked it a lot. Some critics seemed to read this movie as an attempt at satire, and I just don't see it that way. There's black comedy elements, but it's a pretty straightforward story (with lovely filmic touches) focused on what happens to be a pretty realistic clash of ideologies. Also for the life of me I can't take anyone seriously who thought these characters were "broadly drawn" -- it's such a clueless, fundamentally inattentive take. None of these characters are caricatures. Anyway, I'm complaining about critics too much. It's not an explosive movie with a major climax, it's a tight, sometimes-tense but always personal exploration of some very real points of view knocking into one another.

That movie rules. Existential horror for all ages.

Finished Alien Covenant. I don't understand these films. You can't combine an existential debate about life and human creation with a dumb as fuck monster/slasher film. It doesn't work. You can't both attempt to be clever and deep and at the same time write your characters as a bunch of fucking idiots who apparently know nothing about first contact scenarios.

The flaws remain the same as in Prometheus. Conflict and danger based upon unbelievable character actions. It's a manuscript that once again assumes it's audience, people who watched earlier hard sci-fi horror films, have no brain.

And don't get me started on the whole home world of the Prometheans things. There's so much story there. You could have done so many interesting things with that. Instead it gets maybe 5 minutes of screen time and is never utilised.

I have no idea what the point of this film even was. Was it just meant to be the transition between 1 and 3? David did bad stuff in 1, now he will be able to do bad stuff in 3? Fuck off. The first film had some depth, this one... It's almost Alien vs Predator 2 levels of stupid.

These films would have been a lot better if they'd been separated from the Alien franchise.

Eh, I never thought these were films with a whole lot of nuance to them. Scary films in space. Granted, people tend to get a lot dumber in the sequels, but they also don't have the knowledge of Ridley to ward them off stupidity.
Trouble arrives when the opponents to such a system institute its extreme opposite, where individualism becomes godlike and sacrosanct, and no greater service to any other ideal (including community) is possible. In such a system rapacious greed thrives behind the guise of freedom, and the worst aspects of human nature come to the fore....

See. I think the producers misled the audience. Do you remember all that marketing before Prometheus was released? Weyland making a TED talk? Weyland-Yutani commercials? Ridley Scott doing promotion talking about religious themes? Speaking of the film(s) as something complicated and important.

It's pretty clear that there is some interesting themes behind these films. They just drown in bad writing. I guess it's another lesson about doing prequels that shine a light on the mystery that fascinated the viewer about the original story.

I'm FAIRLY sure you can't like and support THE PHANTOM MENACE for internal consistency...and then piss on PROMETHEUS and COVENANT man.

A but you see there is the difference. I have never been particularly in love with any of the Star Wars films. They are all equally good/bad.

Meanwhile in my opinion Alien and Aliens, the two first Alien films, are great films. Solid, tight manuscripts, great cinematography and a complete understanding of what they are meant to be. A slasher film in space and an action film on an moon base. They play to their strengths.

The Alien films in many ways mirror the Terminator films. Terminator 1 and Alien 1 are ground breaking, scary, gruesome and something you'd never seen before. T2 and A2 are James Cameron blowing up the story, injecting a ton of money into the concept and greatly expanding the idea behind the films. And just like Terminator completely lost the plot after 2, the Alien films are completely lost now.

What the hell does Covenant try to achieve? All the aliens are constantly right out in the open, there's no mystery or suspense there. They're actually just the supporting baddie to what was meant to be the core story. The Prometheans. But the prometheans aren't even in the fucking film!

This is what is written about it on IMDB.

Quote

Tara Reid brings her Oscar award winning prowess to this documentary about a hedgehog that Dean Cain farted on giving it the ability to talk. It's a fun loving family movie that will for sure make you say "WOWZA. That's a stinky fart!"
