Adrienne Palicki has better stuntwork/kinetic work skills. Theron is clearly better with a gun than she is with actual filmic fighting - she's not horrible at the latter, but she's not as good as Palicki or Reeves (current gold standard).

Overall film could be a decent B movie if the story is simple and proceeds quickly. It looks kinda a mess in the trailer, but I won't judge it completely on that.

Let's be fair though, although he didn't quite start out that way Keanu is essentially a career action star (the second best one at the moment, of course, after the Stath), whereas despite Mad Max in which she mostly drove and shot anyway, Charlize Theron isn't. Like you say, he's the high end of the scale.

Although I'm also assuming when you say Reeves is the gold standard you're not counting actual martial-arts movie figures.



In any case someone has to be a lot more inept than Charlize Theron appears to be there for me to notice. I'm far more likely to notice problems with the action direction than the action acting unless it's really egregious.

Reporting a little late, but I took my son to see Kong: Skull Island last weekend. Surprisingly gory for a PG-13 film (in just a couple of shots), but otherwise it was a lot more enjoyable than I would have expected. There's a post-credits scene that will probably get certain people (though not myself) very excited.

Since it's ST. PATRICK'S DAY today, I figured I would recommend a good irish comedy, The Young Offenders, if you want to watch something with an Irish feel. Plus i had the good fortune to work as crew on the film last summer so I'm always gonna shill for it. While it might have been difficult for people outside of ireland to see it before, now ye don't have that excuse, especially since it's just been made available worldwide on Netflix!

The first few minutes might be tricky for some to get used to the Irish accents (specifically Cork City accents) but it's a decent show with a good heart. (and we're still boasting a 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes, and an audience score of 88%. Not bad.

Okay, I watched The Young Offenders and very much enjoyed it. It's essentially a dim-witted buddy movie, mostly comedy with a little drama, but decidedly low key -- not really farcical like Bill & Ted or fourth-wall-breaking in a Wayne's World way (there's narration and whatever meta-humor is mined is still grounded in character). I DID have to use the subtitles for the whole movie, but it was never a burden. It's often quite funny (the chicken scene is my favorite), the finale pays off pretty well, and it's only 80 minutes so it never wears out its welcome.

I also watched SING, the animated movie. It's beautifully animated (though design isn't super original, aside from the cool-looking cats), but other than that it's extremely depressing and stressful -- the stakes aren't super high but it's constantly hovering around multiple personal disasters -- and it's almost 2 hours long. I think kids might love it for the music and the animation and because they don't understand all these awful/stressful 'adult' problems all the characters are going through.

Cheers for watching and saying what you thought of it. Am curious about the subtitles bit. I figured they might be necessary for the opening scene since you wouldn't be used to the accents. But I didn't think they'd be needed for the whole thing? It's so hard to tell for me, since i basically live where this is set. Do you think it was the accent itself or the slang (or both)?


as for my own movie watching. Saw LOGAN last week, and enjoyed it a lot. Wasn't as wild about it as most people seem to be however as i felt it was quite predictable at times. But overall, still really good.

Saw DOCTOR STRANGE as well finally and really enjoyed that too. The ending is a bit ...meh.. and Benedict Cumberbatch's accent is all over the place, but otherwise, it's a very good origin story for the character. I liked Tilda Swinton in it too. She has such an interesting vocal delivery, that lends such gravitas to what she is saying (which is handy for when you have to spout a load of pseudo-science and pseudo-philosophy bullshit in a film). The cloak was pretty funny too. I am curious as to how they'll fit DOCTOR STRANGE into the other films.

Watched The Shallows. A run of the mill survive the great white shark movie. Underwhelming in most ways except for a few special effects. It probably will eventually make the rounds on SyFy during the week they air the latest Sharknado movie.

I give it 2.5 poorly acted Blake Lively pained expressions out of 5 (or alternatively, 1 ungrateful seagull asshole bird out of 2).

Trailer for Martin McDonagh's new film, Three Billboards Outside Epping, Missouri. He's a 'watch-on-release' director for me, and this has a great cast and a solid premise. Very excited.

I finally saw Arrival. I loved it. Was rivetted start to finish. My only negative comment isn't really about the movie itself but about how one particular plot device is routinely rolled out to make an audience warm to a female protagonist. It works in the movie but why

Think it through and basically a woman has to be a mother to be universally warmed to but then can't be too perfect but also can't have been responsible for whatever baggage they're carrying either. So easy peasy to have a dead child - damaged but it's not their fault

We never see anyone "warm to her" though, since the child's birth, life, and death doesn't occur on screen during the events...but rather after them. The extent of her characters interaction with the child and loss of said child occurs in the brief flash-forward scenes. Yeah I meant it is used for the audience to warm to a female character. Not other characters. And it's because popular culture hasn't got to grips with women as complex likeable characters in their own right. Sandra Bullock's character in Gravity was the same. Both good films but it's easy shorthand in a plot.

Saw Kong. It was pretty decent overall, though it had some typically predictable and contrived moments.

I kinda feel like it needed more survival aspects to it and less outright action, especially to make it stand out a bit from other kaiju films, but it was good as it was.
