I am excited for John Wick Chapter 2 to be released.

For sure, I like Kevin's films usually, so this was a letdown.

I stopped being nice in movies a while ago. I'm paying, i won't suffer, and i don't give a crap if it turns into a scene.
Since then i have:
- told a woman to put her boots back on because her feet stink;
- told a guy to wake his wife up and leave because her snoring was louder than the movie;
- told two senior citizens to act like adults and shut up;
- used hand gestures to tell a bunch of ESL students the same.

Only the last thing almost turned and three random people nearby stood up and backed me up which ended the almost confrontation nicely.

I do give usually people with little kids a pass tho'. Because kids.

I finally saw The Lobster. It's like a two hour goofy episode of Black Mirror. If you thought the trailer was weird, the movie is even weirder. I liked it quite a bit, but I dunno if it needed to be two hours long. Everybody commits, though, that's for sure.

I also saw Dirty Grandpa. I only watched it cuz Aubrey Plaza is my wife, and she doesn't disappoint, but the rest of the movie isn't very good. It's got more than zero laughs though, I'll give it that, largely cuz it has comic ringers in it like Jason Mantzoukas and Adam Pally who do good work in smaller parts.

Edit: Oh yah, I finally watched John Wick too. It was pretty rad. I read this on the IMDB trivia page, pretty gnarly: Michael Nyqvist cut his entire head open during a shooting of a scene with a stuntman, leaving his ear resting on his right shoulder. This resulted in 80 stitches. Some of the last scenes had to be re-done to hide Nyqvist's scar.

John Wick never really stuck out enough for me to watch it. I guess I need to re-evaluate my first impression!

Yup, this is me too. In fact, I wish that every theatre in North America would adopt the rules of the Alamo Drafthouse theatres. No talking, No Texting, out on your ass first offence with no refund.

I have no problem shushing people, telling them to shut up (if the shush doesn't work), if they are close to me purposely turning in my seat and staring them down until they look at me and see I'm not happy. I have ratted people out to the ushers, and other staff.

People are getting bolder and brasher...not sure if it's fucking millenials....but I have my suspicions.....this guy had his phone on, and was doing something on it right in front of me. Bright screen. So I asked him to put it away. He said okay, but then ignored me and kept it out. So I asked him again. He just shook his head at me as if to say "Fuck you, I'll do what I want". So I went out to the lobby and told an usher, who came in...told him to turn it off/put it away...and he FUCKING DIDNT. He literally told her okay....but then kept on it. She stood in the aisle waiting for him to put it away and he still didn't. So she came at him again and told him if he didn't put it away, he would have to leave. He huffed and sighed and put it away. That is literally the most asshole I've ever seen anyone be at a theatre. To ignore staff repeated warnings while they stand there. After the movie he bolted just as the screen went to credits...I'm pretty sure he was afraid of what I might have said to him when the lights were up.

But yeah, I don't tolerate shit anymore. I paid to see this movie...if you paid to talk or text instead, then come hell or high water I will see that it stops.

There is also something to be said for spending the extra cash to go VIP (which most Cinplex locations now have available) for a movie these days. It's 19+ (so no annoying teenagers), and it costs like $25 so it seems to be a much better quotient of "quiet, because I want to see this movie in peace and I paid extra for that" people than the regular screenings. Added bonus? Big, reclining seats, alcohol and food served to you.

I can't recall the last time I went to a regular screening. It's been VIP for me all the way since they started putting them in all Cineplex locations in Toronto a few years ago.

I'm an utter fan of the VIP theaters. I rarely go to see movies and when i do, it's something i want to enjoy on a big screen specifically. Comfy chairs and booze help too.

100%. And I even started doing it before the VIP's took over in most theatrers when you could only find one at one (MAYBE two) theatres in Toronto. Now, thank the maker, they are everywhere!

I'll also add my thumbs-up for VIP theaters. Heck, even the ones where you can reserve your seats in advance (like DBox or AVX) are worth the extra expense, IMHO. Just the fact that I won't have to wait in a line, or cross my fingers that some yutz doesn't try to block off a whole row of seats makes it a good buy.

Unfortunately there aren't a lot of cinemas around here that offer VIP, I'm hoping that will change soon. The few times that I've splurged on it were great.

I've never heard of the 'VIP Theater' option. Maybe not a popular option in the US? Or maybe I just need to investigate it some more.

Luckily I've only had to use the usher threat once, so for the most part I haven't had to deal with jerks. A lot of that probably has to do with the fact that I never see a movie on opening day (or even opening week or 2, 3 sometimes 4 weeks after opening). I still have't seen Star Wars Rogue One. I was definitely planning on seeing it in the theater, I may be too late now. The reviews for it weren't all that great, so that is probably why I haven't been motivated to see it.

On a happy note, I love watching independent movies in those special, sorta run down "art house" type theaters. The one that is located in a small, rundown space in the art district part of the city. The refreshments are crappy, the audience is always so quirky and weird, but because they are serious lovers of the art of film they are always quiet and attentive. And they always seem to applaud at the end of a movie. I saw Birdman in a place like that and really enjoyed it.

R1 was my recent big screen view and it was utterly worthwhile. Like someone took all the best bits of the various SW flics and distilled them into one fun 2hr sf-feste. Worthwhile.

Indeed. This was why (when I had the time) that I so enjoyed going to the Film Festival. The audiences were ALWAYS respectful, and anyone who didn't tow that line, got told off by and entire theatre full of people. It's rare though, in my 15+ years of attending the Festival, I maybe encountered a rude person once or twice over the course of hundreds of movies.

My favorite movie theater story is from when we saw the opening of Revenge of the Sith, and about 5-10 minutes in, someone's baby starts crying. After a minute or so of this, another moviegoer stands up and yells, "Take. The baby. OUT." The lady leaves with her baby and the whole room bursts into applause.

My local independent cinema is the best one ever. It's a restored art deco proper one and it's gorgeous. They show a really good range of stuff and stream live theatre and stuff. No fancy seats but there is a bar and it's just got a cool vibe and is really cheap in comparison to the multiplex.

AND the lobby is used as one of the bars in the Simon Pegg flick The World's End (the one with the school disco) because they filmed a lot of that movie in the town.

Edit to add - I've never seen anyone take a baby into the cinema for a normal screening. What are people thinking?

I really should see that film. Apart from, even if it's weaker, being a Pegg/Frost/Wright special, a great deal of it was filmed in Welwyn Garden pubs where I drink.



Although frankly rather than jumping around all over north Herts they should have just filmed it in St Albans where they'd be spoiled for choice with the fifty billion pubs it has.
