Finally saw The Wind Rises, and fortunately it's another opportunity to use my patented Malazan board hashtag #WTHQT. It's not the best Ghibli by any means, as it's in some ways a fairly conventional biopic (however fictionalized), but it does the smart thing in focusing on a few periods instead of doing a sweeping birth-to-death story. Also it's unrelentingly romantic, and visually as gorgeous as anything Miyazaki has done.

There is a hashtag about me? Awesome.

In retrospect, I have re watched THE WIND RISES (and competed it this time) and I've 180ed on it and agree with you. I think I had originally had preconceived notions about it and wasn't patient. It's a great film...it's not his best but it is his most heartfelt.

WTHQT indeed! That guy is crazy.

Saw JUPITER ASCENDING last night. To me, it recalled the worst bits of the Matrix films without any of their redeeming qualities. Of course, the visuals are amazing and I'm sure in 3D they would have been even more so.
OK, I think I got it, but just in case, can you say the whole thing over again? I wasn't really listening.

Nah. Fuck 3D.

Of course, 3D doesn't work well for me and the only reason I watch films in it is because sometimes my local cinema doesn't show films in anything else, the fuckers. It was as I said worse for this film than usual (even in IMAX, which usually alleviates the problem).

Fuck. 3D.
I can't carry it for you, but I can carry you.

Also saw Jupiter Ascending and in 3D. Looked pretty nice but the plot of the movie was terrible. Its as if they asked some girls in grade 3 to make a futuristic princess story and rolled with it.
No Touchy.

Sean Penns last comment was a joke, right?

Sigh...that feeling when one of the worst films you've watched all year wins Best Picture.

He said something along the lines of "Who gave this guy a green card?" in reference to Inarritu.

Even in a joking light, it was a profoundly tone deaf moment and shouldn't have been said publicly.

Sean Penn is a woman beating fuckstain and the fact of his continued existence should be completely ignored.
Hello, soldiers, look at your mage, now back to me, now back at your mage, now back to me. Sadly, he isn’t me, but if he stopped being an unascended mortal and switched to Sole Spice, he could smell like he’s me. Look down, back up, where are you? You’re in a warren with the High Mage your cadre mage could smell like. What’s in your hand, back at me. I have it, it’s an acorn with two gates to that realm you love. Look again, the acorn is now otataral. Anything is possible when your mage smells like Sole Spice and not a Bole brother. I’m on a quorl.

I think it was a joke, given the venue, but it was a really bad one.

I saw Rosewater today, a movie about the imprisonment of Maziar Bahara in Iran. Pretty damn decent movie I thought.
Screw you all, and have a nice day!

Blomkamp has the eye, but his style is closer to Ridley's early work than it is Cameron's so I'm not sure he can pull off what he wishes. That said, I'll be happy to see it, and happy to see it retcon and refresh the series by icing ALIEN 3 and subsequently RESURRECTION (though I enjoyed most of that 4th film).

And if Weaver is in it and it's after ALIENS...then can we assume that Biehn is not far behind and Hicks will finally survive...the only question will be Newt. Recast? Or aged? The orginal actress Carrie Henn is now 39...and I suppose if they have Weaver and possibly Biehn as their ages, she could be too and the film just has them in stasis for years?

Watching FF: The Spirts Within and I'm amazed that it still looks like top quality CGI for its age. The Star Wars prequels were made in this same time and imo have aged so fucking with its CGI. The story of FF is shit but damn this movie was eye candy

Tbf, it's always a bit easier not to date when you're looking at pure CG rather than mixing it with live action.

Although that's no defence of Star Wars, the prequels mixed the two spectacularly badly.

Have you seen the Korean film Sky Blue (also known as Wonderful Days)? It apparently uses similar techniques to Final Fantasy, attempts similar sorts of visuals and was made at about the same time (2003). It's aged fucking fantastically (although it's helped a touch in this regard because unlike FF it didn't attempt realistic people).
I can't carry it for you, but I can carry you.

Finally got a chance to see DAWN OF THE PLANET OF THE APES and really, really enjoyed it. As someone who really loved RISE...this movie takes the best bits of that first one and amps them up to twelve. Matt Reeves proves that CLOVERFIELD wasn't some fluke success...as his directing chops are WELL suited to this series. Andy Serkis deserves every damned award out there for his mocap performance. Nothing short of stunning. The special effects in this are a masterpiece. the apes look so real you forget they are CGI...and thats the mark of top shelf graphics. Just an all around intense and entertaining flick.

Just watched this and absolutely agree. This is the franchise of the moment, and I'm more excited for the third one of these than I am for all the Treks, Wars, and Avengings yet to come.
They came with white hands and left with red hands.

I don't really understand the appeal with the new apes movies. The first one (the recent one) was okay but this sequel one was pretty bad IMO. Its just people wanting somethig and disagreeing with apes and shit goes down. Literally no new concept or anything interesting appeared in that movie. If you replace apes with another tribe of people or large talking meerkats or one even larger yeti nothing would change. I guess people just like the idea of talking apes? Probably why there were so many shitty sequels of the original 1968 movie. Just no original ideas. Yes, the CGI was good but that is all I can say about it.

Well, it's a war movie. It's not trying to break boundaries in filmmaking. It's telling a war story with factions that are pretty much discovering each other for the first time.

If you don't care for delving into psyches within the forum of war....it's likely not going to be for you?

I would call it more of an action movie trying to scratch a surface rather than delving.
