Well he was both in Zatoichi so...
I don't know why I've seen so little Japanese stuff, tbh. I don't watch as much foreign work as I'd like anyway (tbh I don't watch nearly as much film as I probably make out, especially in the last two years for various reasons), but when I do I'm most drawn to South Korean.
It's defo on the list for when I have more time and money than I do right now, though.

Finally got out to see MOCKINGJAY PART 1.
Absolutely STELLAR! Francis Lawrence outdid himself and crafted one of the finest war movies I've yet seen. I mean Ridley Scott would have had a tough time making a war movie with such a strong emotional core and believable scripting.
Loved ever last bit of it, and I'm a bit impressed that this was only the table setting for the finale...and it was never boring or suffered any pacing issues.
My fave of the series so far. Easily.

Bluh. The Mrs refuses to go see it.
OK, I think I got it, but just in case, can you say the whole thing over again? I wasn't really listening.

Automata is the best movie I've seen in 2014.
If you can imagine District 9 + Blade Runner + the American Southwest, you've pretty much got the movie's setting down.
The only weak spot is Melanie Griffith's immobile face (due to too many plastic surgeries). I'm not even joking about this. It drags down her supporting performance.
Otherwise, fantastic movie that honestly should win awards somewhere and live on in the real Sci Fi cult audience forever.

The second HG movie is far better than the first in every single way. Haven't seen MJ1, but it being the best book of the trilogy, I have little doubt it's awesome as long as they didn't sanitize it.

Oh, not to worry, they did NOT sanitize it.
The taking down of the District 5 hydro-electric damn is nothing short of a D-Day beach landing sequence. It's amazing.
Nor did they skimp on the Peeta stuff. It's visceral, realistic, and hard as hell to watch.

Hobbit : Battle of the Five Armies.
It's mostly good. Some moments are very, very good. However It isn't "great", and being the last one I really wanted it to be. They've been heavy-handed with the director's cuts yet again so I expect it to be like Desolation and very much improved by the extended edition. However, that's cheeky. You should be making your cinematic cut the best it can be, and then putting in additional extras - not saving your best stuff for the longer version. Also, from some of the changes made (won't explain, because spoilers) it's very clear they cared more about their pathetic two-bit love story than they did the heart of the book.
A nod must go to Richard Armitage and Martin Freeman though - they both just walk in and casually steal the film.

Watched American Hustle. It was pretty good but it ain't on the level of Goodfellas or Boogie Nights in terms of 70s period pieces that critics go gaga over. Closer to like Casino or Carlito's Way, where a decent (but familiar, not particularly ambitious) story stands out due to great idiosyncratic performances.

Saw the last hobbit. About what you'd expect considering the drawn out mediocrity of the previous two instalments. There weren't quite as many chase scenes through impressive scenery, but they did double down on the philosophy that all weapons are used as clubs and all fights should last five minutes too long.
All the same, some of the performances were great. Cumberbatch is a fantastic Smaug.

Actually, the attack on Laketown was really well done though. I thoroughly enjoyed that part. Shame it went so downhill for the next two hours.

Finally saw WHITE CHRISTMAS...that movie isn't really Chistmassy. It was good, but not Christmassy.

Watched Transcendence.
What an awful film this is. It reminds me of the sci-fi films we got in the 70s and 80s about computer technology. This idea that machines are inherently evil because they have no soul.
The premise of the whole film and the way it evolves is so dumbed down that it's hard to sit still and not start shouting at the television.
Stupid shitty movie script.

Apt, this is a prime example of how your taste in movies is so wildly erratic that people can't deal with it. There's a mix of good questions, bad ones and a curious disregard for other important things in there and that mix is so peculiar to you so what you experience often veers dramatically from what most other people experience.
I'll go into the spoilers to answer your questions:

47 Ronin is a demonstrably worse movie and you called it a great time just a few days ago.

It would have set up bases all across the globe in every country on every continent that mirrored the one in the American desert. It would be launching nanobots into space to seed the solar system, the Oort cloud, Alpha Centauri, etc. to ensure it would always survive. It would be digging into the Earths core and building battery asteroids around the sun for an unlimited source of power.
I posit that he reads Greg Bear and therefore 99% of all SF doesn't pass the suspension of disbelief.
It has to be a really good story for me to overlook the science holes. And once I start bitching about the holes it snowballs. I think I made it through about 20 minutes of Transcendence.
Apt, have you seen The Europa Report? If you haven't stop what you're doing and do so now. I'll wager a two week avatar of your choice change that you love it.

The Interview has been cancelled.
And contrary to scoffing disbelief around the web for the last few days...it sounds like North Korea WAS responsible.

No man, Trey Parker and Matt Stone are responsible. Everyone is watching Team America now as a sort of "F-U" to North Korea. You can't fool me!

I'm incredibly pissed off that none of you motherf@#$%ers ever mentioned how awesome the last two UNIVERSAL SOLDIER movies (REGENERATION and DAY OF RECKONING) are. I damn near pissed my pants during every single fight scene of DOR. So good.

Theorizing that one could poop within his own lifetime, Doctor Poopet led an elite group of scientists into the desert to develop a top secret project, known as QUANTUM POOP. Pressured to prove his theories or lose funding, Doctor Poopet, prematurely stepped into the Poop Accelerator and vanished. He awoke to find himself in the past, suffering from partial amnesia and facing a mirror image that was not his own. Fortunately, contact with his own bowels was made through brainwave transmissions, with Al the Poop Observer, who appeared in the form of a hologram that only Doctor Poopet could see and hear. Trapped in the past, Doctor Poopet finds himself pooping from life to life, pooping things right, that once went wrong and hoping each time, that his next poop will be the poop home.
