Eh? I didn't get that vibe at all.

Until at the very least the Kursed Mr. Eko comes down and wreaks havoc I don't think he's sure of his eventual escape...both emotional conversations he has with his parents happen before that moment. After that, sure he's probably planning something...but before that I think he's aware of how stuck he is.

Personally, I feel that Loki expressed true emotions in this film.

I have no idea why a good chunk of people are so stuck on Heimdall/Idris Elba. He does a great job and the skin color has absolutely nothing to do with anything. If they made him bright pink, less people would complain.

So... yeah, it's a bit racist to keep focusing on that over and over.

Yes, this! I agree. I really don't give a crap that Heimdall is black. Idris Elba delivers and that is all that matters to me!

I wasn't aware that there was some kind of anger surrounding "black Heimdal". I just found the choice strange and unnecessary. As far as I recall he's the ONLY black Asgardian in the film and the only one who looks distinctly inhuman with the cat eyes or what ever they were. His appearances clashed with the rest of the Gods. Historically I could actually accept this because there are myths that suggest that he is a god that was later introduced into the Norse mythology but in this situation he just seemed like the token black guy inserted to make civil rights organisations happy.

You forget Heimdall's ability to see pretty much everywhere, with unique eyes being a convenient shorthand, and whatever the one who isn't Volstagg or the fencer guy also not being traditional European and in a semi-major role.

You may find it offensive but you have to realise it's a serious problem. We can't just have Mesopotamian and Germanic and African gods just coming in to our pantheons and taking the jobs of hard working ancestral gods like our Norse protectors. With out the strength of the Norse Gods the icegiants would have trampled our homelands ages ago, the Midgaard serpent would have enveloped our lands and the Fenris wolf would have eaten the sun and where would be then, huh?

The reaction to Heimdall being played by the fantastic Idris Elba is fairly minor to the Rue from the Hunger Games reaction atleast on twitter. Consistent references to how they didnt care that Rue died in the film, as opposed to the book, because she was played by a young black actress is not only disgusting but also baffling as shes mentioned as being black in the books anyway. Idris Elbas voice and stature in Thor 1/2 were very good and fitted Asgardian power more than the elderly Anthony Hopkins, though he was cast more for his screen presence rather than his martial prowess in the stunts department. Im glad Elba was utilised alot more and thought he did well.

People go on about the source material being sullied by film adaptations, usually in regards to casting, because it doesnt fit the picture they had in there head. Not even to do with race like with the Daniel Craig as blonde Bond or Ben 'Daredevil' Affleck as the new Batman, people wil always find something to bitch at and sometimes it falls on race. But really it makes no difference aslong as the actor is good. Red, in the Shawshank Redemption played by Morgan Freeman, is white in the books yet Freemans performance, as well as the critical acclaim for the film, is widely lauded to be one of the best ever.

Anyway I enjoyed Thor 2 and am looking forward to the new Cap America as that looks good, aslong as it stays away from beating me over the head with political allegory as the trailer suggests it might.

CAP 2 is being touted as a political thriller though.

Saw Thor 2 last night and loved it! I liked it a whole lot better than the first one, which was entertaining, but not brilliant. I liked the design of the dark elves better than the frost giants, and Asgard looks so awesome!

Never had a problem with black Heimdall, I thought it was fitting, actually...as Heimdall is one of the gods we know the least about. Personally, I absolutely love the concept of the norse gods being humanoid aliens and not actually gods, and that norse mythology is mostly stories trying to connect everything in a way more "primitive" minds can understand.


I haven't really gotten around to reading any of the comics yet, so how much will/does the movies/comics adhere to what really happens according to the mythology?




Tom Hiddleston as Loki is doing a superb job, and Hemsowrth has come quite a way since the first Thor movie. I find the Jane character a bit annoying, as she spends most of the movie fainting, but she redeems herself in the end.


Can't wait for the next movie!!




PS: What comics should I read?

Sometime in the early 2000s (I think?) Marvel began (yet another) reboot of its universe trying to adapt the characters and their stories to a more modern era and making it easier for new readers to get into the comic books. In this universe the Avengers are called "The Ultimates" and it is this universe most of the movies are based on, with some liberties taken in the attempt to make it work on screen.

The movies completely ignore a lot of the more crazy aspects of the classic universe. Namely magic and demons and gods, etc. In the normal comics the Norse gods are A LOT more powerful than the movie versions. They are more "shakespearean" in the sense that they act and talk like they are taken out of the viking age with a mix of weird technology and supernatural elements thrown into the mix.

The best place to start in my opinion is with the new Thor storyline that was begun in 2007. It is absolutely fantastic, both in terms of art and story. Google tells me that it is Volume 3 of the series. It's written by J. Michael Straczynski and the artists are: Olivier Coipel & Marko Djurdjevic

I'll back Apt up there. If you want to get as close to the movie universe as you can in comic form...the ULTIMATES line is where to begin. The original one, not volume 2 or 3.

There do also seem to be prelude trades for each movie telling the before story, which you could pick up.

I'd say go with The Ultimates Volume 1+2 and just burn any volume 3 copies you see and crap all over the ashes. Volume 3 is absolutely horrendous in such a way that I wouldn't disregard claims that it causes brain damage.

Volume 1 is the best, but the second is decent enough to warrant the time and money invested in reading it.

Oh in case there was any confusion when I mention Thor Volume 3, that is the normal marvel universe. Not the stuff related to the Ultimate universe of which I can only really recommend Ultimate Spiderman and Ultimate Fantastic Four which on the other hand are great.
