I watched Thor 2 yesterday. First time in the cinema for aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaages and it was worth it, fantastic film. Best superhero flick of the year, for my money.

Yeh agreed. Preferred it to Iron Man 3 though the new Cap America looks good aswell. Phase 2 is good so far.

Yeah, IM3 was formally the beginning of Phase 2, obviously, but really you may be right in some ways- IM3 is heavily concerned with the aftermath of Avengers and hasn't in any obvious way done much setting up for later films (though it's conceivable that his decision at the end could contribute to Avengers 2's plot, with what we know of it).

I watched The World's End recently, and though it was maybe the weakest of the Three, it was still brilliant. A number of laugh out loud moments, and the chemistry between Pegg and Frost is endearing as always.

Those were pretty much my feelings as well. A very good effort, and still a wonderful film, but not a scratch on the first two.

It was quite charming having Pegg be the loser of the group with Frost trying out the role of functioning (and amusingly badass) adult.

As always, by far the best part of the movie was the dialogue. I hope the three; Wright, Pegg and Frost continue making films together.

How is Thor 2 compared to Thor 1? I did not think very highly of Thor 1.

I thought it was a solid step up, just more confident in itself all round. Plus the pacing is more smooth and the action is considerably better done.

I reckon it's probably the best of the Marvel films so far except for maybe Avengers - though I'll see how both this and IM3 stand up when I rewatch them.

He also got me a copy of the 1996 Doctor Who movie, which I have never seen.

One of my favourites in recent years, Cloud Atlas, even if I can't seem to get through the book. Bought the Blue Ray last week and had a look at the special features last night. On the whole I was a bit dissapointed with it, but it did help loads in fleshing out the plot(s) and characters.

The movie itself is rather lackluster as a story...but Paul McGann is the BEST as the Eighth Doctor. Ignore everything else but him, and it's gold.

Saw THOR 2 today...and it was as excellent as I'd hoped it would be! Really kickass stuff. Well done all round.

Got to see Ender's Game. Im sure there is a thread for it on here, but i liked it. I didnt LOVE it, but it looked good. I bet anyone who hasnt read it will be a little more than confused by sone things, and it wasnt 100% from the book. But it pleased visually. Would have loved more from Mazer, Bean, Valentine and Peter, and there was nothing regarding the political aspects. Still it was pretty.

I'm not that thrilled about Thor 2. The bad guys seemed a bit off, leaving the Infinity Gem stuff out (cutscene) and the plot beats were off for me.

Three out of five is my rating. Portman, Stellan, Hemsworth and Dennings did their best to carry the movie. Loki was kind of too emotional during his talk with Odin and Frigga for my tastes, although the rest was quite good.

That was one of my fave bits. Loki is such an amazingly tiered character. Hiddelston makes you care one moment, curse him the next, then care again, and then curse again...and you never feel the rope as it twists you into those emotions. What I loved especially about his scene with Frigga is the raw emotion...this is Loki stripped bare to his youth. It's honest, and helps his walk along the balance line of evil be something more than just a caricature. He's not purely evil. As Thor says in the one scene..."sometimes I look at you and hope my brother is still in their somewhere." But that layering is what gives his villain the gravitas to be one of the most prized characters in the whole Marvel media pantheon. I thought Hiddelston nailed this movie as the character more than he has in any of the previous films in the franchise...and that's all due to those scenes with his parents.

For me anyways.

But he was never truly despairing or worried about getting out of Asgardian jail. He knew he'd get out and then replace Odin as he did. The emotions he displayed were crocodile tears, no more.

Really? I loved Thor. Awesome visuals and down right funny the way Thor acted on Earth. It was my fav of Ironman, Hulk, CA except of course Avengers. I'm curious. What did you dislike of it?

As a marvel fan I dislike that they went with the Ultimates "Asgardians are just extra dimensional beings" angle and then further washed down the power and "majesty" of these mythological characters. But that's not really why I disliked the film.

I thought that the story was weak over all. It was basically the "Thor" origin story but told with little to no flare. The Ice giants were boring (I guess they didn't have the budget for 100 foot tall ice giants) and the Loki is actually an icegiant angle was handled hamfistedly. When Loki then discovers his ancestry he acts like a little child. The Thor on earth stuff is good enough but everything that revolves around the Asgardians and Loki is just badly handled in my opinion. Bad acting, bad story bad dialogue.

All the gods are underwhelming. They are basically just actors pretending to be gods. Loki is a spoiled brat and shows none of the cleverness and spookiness you would expect from an actual god of chaos and strife. Odin is an old fart who can barely walk up a set of stairs instead of being the symbol of the Asgardian strength he is supposed to be. I don't even know what the hell Rene Russo was doing in this film, she certainly did not look like the Queen of the Gods and the Matriarch of the Valkyries she was supposed to be, why is Heimdal a black vampire? It goes on and on. Only character I think was spot on was Thor, plus minus the really fast character development he goes through.

I disturbingly agree with Apt somewhat, though I don't see why Heimdal being black was problematic outside of certain rallies.

Loki I agree was brutaly underutilized. Alas, I fear that actually using him as his aspect demands would be too challenging, and perhaps too risky for the sort of stories Marvel wants to tell.
