It's an artistic thing. The movies as they were theatrically released never pleased him. He always thought they needed tinkering and work to be his vision. He was able (over a lot of years and a lot of tinkering) to get them to pretty much how he wanted them. And that's the version he wants people to see, not the theatrical cuts that he felt were unfinished. A good example of this is the Jabba / Han scene in A NEW HOPE. Without it Lucas felt that the threat to Han about the money-owed was nebulous and not really threatening. So adding it back in he was able to give that threat a screen presence that viewers will be able to palpably feel, not to mention adding weight to the end of EMPIRE and the beginning of JEDI. Sure it's not something we viewers noticed when we watched it as kids, but knowing the reasoning narratively behind Lucas wanting it back in makes it a more palatable change. To me at least.

Note: I'm not defending his decision...I'm just saying what I feel is his issue with not releasing them.

I understand the issue, but...they already HAVE been released. Those were the versions everyone knew for 20 years. That's the stupidity of the whole thing. Sure, keep making Special Extended Director's Preferred Cuts with Bonus CG-Enhanced 3D Twi'lek-on-Twi'lek Girl Action!!! if you want. Why not? How many different cuts of Blade Runner exist? Five?

Yep. Pretty much. But a lot of artists who are sticklers for their art are dicks. It kind of comes with the territory.

Wonder how Disney will approach the issue. Did GL's deal with them include the surrender of the original negatives? If so, I bet fans do get their wish eventually. Disney knows ka-ching when they hear it.

I just watched Cloud Atlas.
It's a pretty confusing film due to the number of individual storylines, but as a Malazan reader I'm kind of used to that.

I'm not very good with words so I'll just say this about the film: it's mostly about freedom, fulfilling your potential and overcoming tyranny. And it was beautiful.

It is not the critic who counts; not the man who points out how the strong man stumbles, or where the doer of deeds could have done them better. The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena, whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood, who strives valiantly; who errs and comes short again and again; because there is not effort without error and shortcomings; but who does actually strive to do the deed; who knows the great enthusiasm, the great devotion, who spends himself in a worthy cause, who at the best knows in the end the triumph of high achievement and who at the worst, if he fails, at least he fails while daring greatly. So that his place shall never be with those cold and timid souls who know neither victory nor defeat.

Saw CAPTAIN PHILLIPS last night.

Wow.

I was NOT expecting to be that impressed. It's an utterly excellent film. Paul Greengrass is the king of making films that don't LOOK like they are films. I always feel right there, in the room with the people in it, watching when I watch his stuff.

Tom Hanks is amazing (Oscar caliber) in it. I mean the progression from "worried, but determined Maersk Captain" to "shock-addled hostagee"...just wow.

Go see this film. Really solid stuff.

I saw Rush and it was good. Mr PigDog hates F1 but he thought it was good too. Considering it was me who wanted to watch it, all the ads beforehand were for cars and aftershave and there were lots of father/son couples watching it together which made me chuckle. Nothing like a good bit of stereotyping.

Just watched "the internship" and the "the heat". Both pretty funny.

Watched "ripd" last week. not bad either...good family show (if kids are a little older).
