Yeah as a kid I enjoyed Judge Dredd. Stallone is a legend, they don't make them like that no more. Stallone, Arnie, Jean Claude, Seagall

As much as Stallone's JUDGE DREDD was ridiculous, over-the-top, and at times batshit insane...not to mention ignoring MOST of the source material for Americanization and comedy additions...it still is a guilty pleasure blast to watch. It's right up there with HUDSON HAWK for "so terribly, cheesily bad, it's good" category.

That said. Urban's DREDD is to Stallone's JUDGE DREDD what THE DARK KNIGHT is to BATMAN RETURNS. So you know, there's that.

Just rewatched Priest on lovefilm as it's on Instant. Film is too good. Paul Bettany and Karl Urban totally kick ass in it. Plus crucifix ninja throwing stars. Needs a long sequel imo.

Hey gang, I just saw This is the End, and I'm not shitting you when I say this is the best movie of the summer (so far), regardless of genre. You must see this movie! It is the first movie in a long while that I found myself laughing out loud. Danny McBride and Michael Cera are ballin!

Seen a few things recently

Superman- Very good superman and apparently going to be a kickstarter for a new 'gritty' DC universe Marvel style films. Unsure whether it will be a culmination film like Avengers or simply linking them all together and padding out the DC universe. Still the film was good with the use of flashbacks throughout being a good way to phase in the origin story.

Epic- A good family style movie very similar to ferngully (which is a cartoon Avatar released in 1992 if you havnt seen it) with solid big name voice acting and very good effects. A good forgettable family adventure

Despicable Me 2- Absolutely brilliant, loved every second of it. The best film experience ive had in ages where I just enjoyed it from start to finish. If you liked the first one then this is just as good if not better. If you didnt like the first one you have no soul ofcourse.

World War Z- (disclaimer: I have recently read WWZ and reread it straight after and so my opinion of it is tainted by it)

It was such a forgettable zombie film that had the bare minimum correlation with the book and the inclusion of a vaccine that makes you invisible to them is utterly terrible as was the obvious execution in how he comes to this conclusion. A WWZ film that doesnt include Yonkers, Hope or any mention of the Reddeker Plan is terrible. The only link with the book is that Israel built a wall that is immediately thwarted once Brad Pitt gets involved which again not relevant to the book and a split second shot of the nuclear exchange between Pakistan and Iran. While I did like the Israeli tenth man intelligence operative speech from the book and the set pieces around Israel it seemed Brad Pitt was the harbinger of doom wherever he went trouble followed. Also the whole point of the zombie apocalypse was that the survivors arent stupid yet the climatic scene in which Brad Pitt injects himself could only happen because he left his weapon outside for some reason.

Could they not have simply picked a few viewpoints like the guy at Yonkers and Hope (though this may not have worked as the zombies were runners in this version), the doctor at the beginning, maybe the submarine plotline and the mercenary who was guardiong the celebrities whose house gets raided?

Maybe im completely biased as the best part about WWZ for me was the way different cultures dealt with it and who came out on top and such like Cuba.

On a side note I watched this film in Cardiff where the last medical centre was and the laughter that met the announcement that thhat was where they had to go took any edge of the, IMO, terrible final scene.

Even with Noland as a producer, I can't see the director of Watchmen and 300 delivering any sort of interesting take on Superman. I'll end up watching it through Netflix when it arrives there at some point, but I'm guessing that it'll be just another Superman movie.

Eh...not a huge fan of Superman in general (faaaar too "super", I mean seriously...let's rename him God and be done with it...(alright, so there are things you do with that, and place you can visit in terms of the things he can't do, but still, way OP, and not enough writers capable of delivering on those options)) and I doubt that this movie will be anything revolutionary, but still intend to see it in the cinema, as at the very least it should be an entertaining action movie.

Somewhat more on topic I watched some weird french animation movie the other day. Fear(s) of the Dark. Basically a collection of short stories about fears and nightmares written and directed by a few comic book creators. Worth watching if you are in, I dunno, "a weird" mood. Was rated a 12 but it really shouldn't be it was pretty messed up at some points.

Oh yah, I've seen Fears of the Dark too and it's pretty excellent. I think I liked every single story in it, to one degree or another. It definitely sometimes feels inspired by nightmares (with dream logic) than straightforward scary campfire story fare, but it's effective.

Took the fam to see MONSTERS UNIVERSITY.

Pretty predictable until the end, when the movie suddenly takes itself very seriously. I actually appreciated what they did there.

If you got kids, they'll love it.

Worth seeing for BLUE UMBRELLA, the short that comes at the beginning. Pixar really does know how to find magic in the most random places, and it seems the short format really brings that out in them.

Watched WWZ as a huge fan of the book & while it mostly ignored the source material, I enjoyed it. I went in with low expectations & tried to see it as something separate to the book & I did like it.

Watched Before Midnight. A very good movie. It's nothing but dialogues and discussion, but those are quite brilliant, although I will say that I thought the first half more interesting (also because it was more philosophical and lighter) than the second half.

Watched WORLD WAR Z.

I haven't read the book (not a huge fan of zombie apocalypse stuff - otoh,I loved Justin Cronin's THE PASSAGE so go figure). As a disaster movie thrill ride, the movie works. It just propels you from one setting to another. But ultimately the whole thing is forgettable.

I wonder how hard it was for the scientist zombie in the vault to keep a straight face during those close-ups. Or even Brad Pitt. I couldn't have done it. Bet there's a long outtake reel of that scene.
