Is something being pulp really an excuse for any problems with a work (or the views it expresses or subtly perpetuates), or a reason not to analyse it? You're saying this on a board built around analysing genre fiction no less! There's plenty of academic work that's been written about pulp, and plenty of (imo valid) reasons to analyse it. Fiction can show the underlying ideas, assumptions and trends of a given era, culture, or creator without being 'high art' (one could even argue that pulp work written for mass consumption better reflects these trends than work written for targetted at a smaller more specific audience).

And I gave a bunch of examples and reasons in the very works we are discussing as to why I have less problems with it than original pulp serials from the 1930s and 40s.....but everyone is choosing to ignore those points I guess.

Just thought I should mention QT that my problem with the Temple of Doom has absolutely nothing to do with artifacts and everything to do with the incredibly racist and orientalist portrayal of South Asian cultures. Honestly a it was like watching the film of the diary of a mid 19th C British Imperialist with all its attendant prejudices and propaganda.

But a point to think about here is that Doom irked me bacause it showed how distorted the portrayal of a familiar culture was. Now I know comparitively little about the cultures shown in the other films but how would they go over with someone from the Middle East or South America?

Watched Star Wars: Rogue One. Not really blown away by the film but it was a solid entry in the franchise. I imagine that if you were a big fan of the original trilogy and the background lore of particularly the beginning of the film series, Rogue One is probably a wet dream for some.

Meet the Patels is really, really good. So much of it resonates with my experiences, although I'm not Gujrati.

What some people may miss when watching this movie is that Vasant and Champa are being super-super-super-open and nice about this whole thing. They explain the process to Ravi so far beyond what my parents or any family members I've ever had. You can see them surrounding him with really smart and intuitive people to let them get a handle on who Ravi is (fairly awesome). The footage also lets you see Ravi totally bomb his dates and stuff like that.

I read the updates and I'm not surprised he and the lady broke up. The talks they have in the movie are 100% on him fucking it all up and I think it took her a very long time to realize he wasn't the right one for her (and him a longer time to stop lying to himself that she was the fit for him). Looks like they're both very happy now.

Depends upon your moral values and your willingness to give people second chances. Do you believe that a person should be professionally blacklisted for personal issues? Should such a ban be indefinite?

Personally I think Gibson makes amazing films so I will definitely watch Hacksaw Ridge eventually.

That Colbert interview was super awkward. You could tell that the business surrounding his career imploding and his personal issues is still a sore topic for him. Also Gibson is still slightly mad.
