No need to feel foolish. There's obviously been a glut of "remakes" lately, for sure. But I mean, Hollywood has always gotten most of its ideas from other sources. Even the first film adaptation of a novel/play/etc is a "remake" of something.

Very true.

It seems there is a 1907 version of Ben Hur that is all of 15 minutes long (?!) and a 1925 silent film. I think I'll stick with the Charlton Heston version!

The new one looks like a cross between the Fast & Furious films and 300. It could be enjoyable lunacy, though it's unlikely to be a great film.
I can't carry it for you, but I can carry you.

I found a script excerpt.

Disciple: Lord, I'd like to introduce you to Ben-Hur.

Lord Jesus: Ben-Hur? I hardly know hur!
They came with white hands and left with red hands.

Finally saw Green Room. I liked Blue Ruin quite a bit, and this might be even better. I don't wanna give the plot away, but it's a very focused, tense thriller. Anton Yelchin and Imogen Poots are both pretty great in it (there's not huge character arcs though), and Patrick Stewart as a villain is a must-see.
They came with white hands and left with red hands.

Besides just not looking good, I think the music is the strangest thing about the trailer.

Now, I don't recall what the old Magnificent Seven played like, but the music is just all wrong. Fucking hip hop or rap music in a western? I mean I could get behind some Wu Tang Clan/Afro Samurai nonsense, but that's not the vibe this film gives off. It just looks like a western with no soul.

The teaser didn't sell me, but I saw this new trailer in front of STAR TREK: BEYOND and I was blown away. I'm happy to watch anything based on SEVEN SAMURAI and then based on a Sturges Western version. Plus, Antoine Fuqua has done no wrong in my books.

I like most of the cast, and Denzil is rarely in a bad film but this just looks ugh.
Oh the Indian, let's make him shoot the bows and arrows!
Why? It's a gun fight.
The Asian! Let's give him knives!!!
Why? It's a gun fight.

Looks like trash, I'll probably still watch it and be entertained from a shooty snooty splosions perspective, and Chris Pratt plays the misfit very well.
But why not give it a new name, leave the magnificent seven alone.

If you count the cleavage shots in the trailer, its the magnificent nine.
Tatts early in SH game: Hmm, so if I'm liberal I should have voted Nein to make sure I'm president? I'm not that selfish

Tatts later in SAME game: I'm going to be a corrupt official. I have turned from my liberal ways, and now will vote against the pesky liberals. Viva la Fascism.
When Venge's turn comes, he will get a yes from Mess, Dolmen, Nevyn and Venge but a no from the 3 fascists and me. **** with my Government, and i'll **** with yours

That song is indeed terrible, but it has nothing to do with whether hip-hop and Westerns go together. Movie itself looks like a boilerplate Western -- naturally given its context -- and will come down to character moments and flash/style in the action.

Indeed. It's ALL about character. That's why a simple tale like the one in SEVEN SAMURAI has endured and been such a solid template. It ALLOWS for the characters to shine. Hopefully that's what will happen here. I have faith in Fuqua, he's not disappointed me yet.

Yup. Seven Samurai is the mold, so 'boilerplate' wasn't a complaint. Only Fuqua I've seen tbh is Training Day, which took the rookie/vet dynamic (fairly familiar territory, if not quite 7S) and really brought it to boil with great characters (and performances). I don't think this looks great, and it certainly ain't gonna be The Good, The Bad, The Weird, but if it's a better than average actioner that'd be swell.

To be fair, what is?

This seems to be the year for utter silliness in places where you wouldn't necessarily think it belongs (Star Trek, the new Ben-Hur, this). I'm game to see how it goes.
I can't carry it for you, but I can carry you.

I was actually really looking forward to the film until I saw the trailer, it just didn't work for me, looks all over the place.

This looks interesting. Almost seems like too much promise for one film. How are they going to squeeze all of that into 100 minutes.

I've been ruined by Game of Thrones. I want them to spin it out into 7 seasons of war and debauchery.

There's a trailer with music that makes more sense. I still want to see both though, as several people have said Fuqua and Denzel don't disappoint.

The first time I watched the trailer, I was not on board.

The second time I watched it, it started to get under my skin.

The third time I watched (when I showed my wife), I decided I'm all fucking in...and I can't explain why. Lol

I think I just like the farm boy trope of King Arthur just being some guy who isn't out to build an empire. That and the fact that this apparently is a fairy tale with dragons, etc. instead of the other grim dark versions we've gotten the past couple of decades.
