I actually kind of liked The Village...to a point. If nothing else, it's one of his most visually striking films. But it's got plenty of flaws, and that final twist was just braindead and irredeemable. I kinda think Shyamalan would have been better off just being a cinematographer.

That said, I'm tentatively excited for After Earth.

My enthusiasm dampened when I saw the new trailer and heard Will attempting some sort of semi-British accent. That didn't come through in the first trailer so clearly he doesn't sustain it well through the film.

And now learning it's a Shyamalan joint I am now even less enthused.

Film Day yesterday

G.I.Joe- Very good never saw the first one and wasnt expecting much. But a very good dumb action film full of cheese and one liners that did make me laugh. Everything Expendables 2 wasnt.

The Croods- Despite Nic Cage being involved a very good family film similar to Ice Age and such. Well worth a watch and I found myself actually caring. The missus was sobbing by the end.

Spring Breakers- Crazy as balls film that is either satire or simply exploitation, but I sort of enjoyed it. I like James Franco and his performance was weird. Worth a watch I suppose.

Watched Room 237, the documentary about various theories on the hidden meanings in Kubrick's The Shining. Very interesting, also almost entirely crazy. A total trip and very engaging despite (or because of?) the insanity.

Finally re-watched the original TRON. Horribly dated but I nevertheless enjoyed.

Made me miss the days of hanging out in the arcade. It was a social gaming experience Xbox Live or MMO's can't touch.

I watched Lockout the other day on bluray. I wanted to catch it in the cinema but it was only on at our local for about 5 days, naturally a bad sign but I anticipated over-the-top so-bad-it's-good territory. It is SOOOOO much silly fun. I watch anything with Guy Pearce in it because he's awesome and this film is Luc Besson doing Escape From LA in space. It isn't a good film and the special effects budget does not live up to the ambition but it's Escape From LA IN SPACE AND GUY PEARCE IS THE LEAD. Do yourself a favour and watch it.

Luc Besson does silly fun so well. His Fifth Element is a modern classic and should have made the people involved skrillions of dollars. Thanks for reminding me of Lockout.

Just watched The Hobbit on blu ray - thoroughly enjoyed it again, although the scene with Bilbo killing a warg before repeatedly stabbing a huge orc to death still stands out like a sore thumb.

average action flick. The premise is no more stupid than various other politically motivated actions films.
Butler does a solid job of hard man kicking the fuck out of people. Plenty of bodies to match up with plenty of shooting which I appreciate and a few good set pieces. Didn't really care for any of the characters who died, never really felt like old Butler was in danger but a watchable popcorn flick. If you wait for dvd watch it on a large tv.

A little too much 'MERICA, FUCK YEAH' bring the rating down a little

Gf dragged me to see Warm Bodies today. A novel idea let down by an inelegantly handled romance plot and an inexplicable ending. A few funny moments but I wouldn't spend money on it.

So I watched Oblivion last night.

Visiually it was stunning, and the music was very well done. Imagery, setting, and so on was all excellent. Tom Cruise was solid, as he tends to be in these sort of movies. Alas, none of the other actors had roles which gave them any sort of material to work with. This was especially true for the two female characters, who seemingly were there only to give some sort of motivation for Cruise's character.

Even Morgan Freeman seemed to struggle with how little he had to go on.

The tech was pretty charming though, the drones were especially great, though I quite enjoyed the flyer too.

When it comes to plot things were not so great. It's hardly a surprising story for those of us somewhat experienced with classic sci fi tropes, and they seem to forget the consequences of major plot points when it suits the continuation of the story. The final showdown I found particularly dissapointing, though still visually beautiful.
